Drinking alcohol in the Indian army was compulsory until an incident in the Punjab Regiment during the Second World War. Sant Baba Jawala Singh Ji (a soldier in the East Indian army at that time) refused the mandatory requirement to drink alcohol and eat meat as ration for battle soldiers. He challenged his commander that fellow vegetarian non alcohol drinking Gursikh soldiers can perform bravely without alcohol or meat. The commander put that to the test as the Punjab Regiment faced the German Army. The commander separated the vegetarian non drinking Sikhs from the rest. Meat eating alcohol drinking soldiers failed to take enemy posts where vegetarian Sikhs successfully conquered enemy posts. The British commander from that day onwards changed the army rules to make meat & alcohol as an option only, and not compulsory.
This event is recorded in the biography of Sant Baba Jwala Singh Ji. 🙏🏼

in my SSC tenure in the IAF, I had not had a drop of liquor , even Beer, at one point my CO, AOC and myself were teetotallers.
Sharab peene ke baad soldier ko sirf do cheese dikhai deta hai pahala apna bandook aur doosara dushman phir dhaddam😂
My Late father was a Wing Commander. He was a non smoker & Teetotaler. Participated in all the wars in the previous century. They are asked, if they politely decline none forces. Even if one drinks it has to be moderate never excessive

Mere mitro sharab daily diet m shamil na karo occasionally hi use karo. Aap ki life se sharab badi nahi. Main khud fauzi hu. PR sharab ka aadi nahi. So good health never allow drink.

During the starting period of Hindavi Swajya (Hindu self-rule) Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj taken strict action against those who had habit of drinking (which was started during bahamani and later Adilshahi period where drinking was normal things to saradar or mansabdars even Adilshah himself drinks often) he ban all such things and started punishing those who did that.

I am a CDS officer and regardless of whether you are a junior or a senior, drink is drink. There is time for everything. But not mandatory. Just cherish the moment. I’m on it right now.

I am sorry to say that it is true there is a tradition in deffence to consume alcohol even in gathering of Hindu Satwik festivals. They select cream from the society but generally till the time of the retirment a rigid and non adjustable person is handed over to them. Exceptions are every where.
