He didn't really guess at what kind of skirt she had. He stated it was impossible for her to float and then presented a simplified scenario to show what it would take to make it happen. Including the 13 layers of historical clothing women had to wear would simply make the video overtly complicated for viewers. The real point of these videos is to provide a bit of education in a fun way.

A skirt like hers definitely has a petticoat to achieve that shape, I’d even argue it has a crinoline under. A floor length, A-Line, full circle skirt can be poofy but it won’t have the silhouette of Peach’s dress without some extra help.
Id put money on it at least having a hoopskirt underneath
I also would have guessed that it was a hoop skirt, which would mean that he would have to account for the hoops and the fact that it would not be the shape he assumed. On the plus side, it would make it easier for peach to maintain the shape of the dress instead of it just flinging itself upwards and obscuring her vision

I study Physics in the uni, and before advanced mechanics, after we’ve been on three differential equations courses and a friggin’ fluid dynamics course (fluid dynamics is literally worse than rocket science and nuclear physics combined), the lecturers always start with assuming the moving object is a ball and that air resistance doesn’t exist. Unless it’s a parachuter or an F1 car, drag generally isn’t enough of a problem to be worth all the hassle of solving for it. ”Assume a perfectly spherical cow falling in a vacuum” is just another day at the office for an undergrad Physics student.

I think its most likely that Peach actually has a skirt that is more than a full circle as well as being much longer than a regular skirt. She also likely have a petticoat or another layer underneath. She could also have a hoop underneath. Shes in a full on royal gown. Looking at the way she walks and how the skirt appears to fold a ton at the bottom I assume its likely longer than floor length. I do not believe this video. I fully choose to believe that it is indeed possible and austin didnt take into account all the likely variables of the skirt in actuality.

Darts are used to help garments fit better. they're used a lot on fitted bodices, check out the seam lines on stuff like women's blazers etc etc. But also there's also skirt darts that help with fitting around the waist to the hips
