That route was defintely nostalgic. I remember traversing that freeway countless times. It's great to see imrpovement to the freeway since it needed it.

While there is no parent I-38 route, there is a CA 238, which continues south at the I-238/I-580 interchange. I-238 was originally a part of CA 238, and during the 80's, CalTrans wanted to upgrade this section to Interstate standards. Every x80 number was already taken, while CA 180 already existed in Fresno. Since CalTrans has a policy of not having 2 different roads sharing the same number, the only option left for the Fed's was to grant an exemption to California, and CalTrans got its way.

I like how this highway goes from urban to rural very quickly. Good video!

You may be right; the original time schedule, IIRC, was to wrap things up along the eastbound lanes by 2010, with westbound HOT lane construction finishing up around 2011. I'll look into this more.

I-238 has 6 lanes, plus auxiliary (merging lanes). I-580 has anywhere between 8 and 12 mainline lanes, with auxiliary lanes between some interchanges.

Under Ike, there was an interstate freeway planned between San Jose and Modesto which would probably have a tunnel under Mount Hamilton (but I am not certain about this tunnel jive). This could explain why there is an Interstate 238, but maybe not. Regardless, Interstate 580 to Interstate 205 to state highway 120 freeways are a mess during the week with stop and go traffic all the way to Modesto during the afternoon commute home which stretches from about 3pm through the evening hours. In the morning, the commute from Manteca begins at around 3am or an hour after the bars close. (I call these early birds the comatose commuters because of the way they drive. They tend to drive in packs going the same speed--very mechanical and synchronized sort of like the dancing in an older Hollywood musical or like they are still asleep.) In summary, I wish they would build that planned freeway because I 580 is too impacted, and it is only going to get worse though the San Antonio Valley (due south of Livermore) is so pristine--one of the most pristine areas of California yet so close to the big city. A new freeway would open all of that up to development--yet, the Bay Area needs the housing.

Neat video, especially Altamont Pass, never seen anything like that.
Altamont is also famous for the concert in 1969 where a guy was allegedly stabbed by a Hells Angels member while the Rolling Stones were playing.

I get the impression that a lot of Europeans are rather overwhelmed with the pure size, elaborate flyovers and number of lanes with some American freeways.

What would the configuration of Highway 84 be if Vasco Road was used? Would the newly built Brentwood Bypass become part of 84?

@longliveaki1138 Well, if you really hate the I-80 traffic and don't mind driving on a 2 lane "blood alley", you can use Route 12 to get to I-5 and go to Sacramento from there.
If you leave SF via the Bay Bridge, you can connect to either Highway 4 directly at Hercules or thru CA24, I-680, CA242 at Concord, go from CA 4 to CA 160, and turn into CA 12 East just outside Rio Vista.
Via GGB, you can connect from 101 to 37, back onto 80, then onto CA12 East there.

Ahhh yes, you're thinking specifically of the stretch between CA 24 and CA 242. I'll eventually have it on here, as well as the rest of I-680. Patience, my friend. :-)

Great video but I-580 has its on problems when going on the westbound direction, and I-580 West is congested on weekdays from I-205 to I-680.

Mr. Brent; would you recommend driving SF to Sacramento via I-580, I-205, I-5, or would you recommend I-80 all the way there?

  • @FreewayBrent
    @FreewayBrent  Před 14 lety +1

@longliveaki1138: Well, from San Francisco to Sacramento, it's *is* an alternate, but not a realistic one, compared to the much more direct I-80 between the 2 cities. However, from San Jose, or for folks that live in the Livermore Valley (Dublin, Pleasanton or Livermore), it is often faster to drive along I-580 to I-5 North.
