    In today's video I talk about Smash Ultimate's flaws as a game and why someone might think the game sucks. As someone who plays and makes content for this game for a living I obviously love the game, but there are some things I absolutely hate.

    I didn’t realize that ult had 6 frames of input delay. That, and training mode being entirely impractical for actual practice is what made me quit playing competitively. I felt like I couldn’t improve to a point where it was worth spending time and money going to locals. I’m not surprised that they wouldn’t include DI for training mode, but the fact that you can’t set the CPU’s spawn location or USE TRAINING MODE ON HAZARDS OFF STAGES is unforgivable imo. Why does the training mode stage have a battlefield portion if I can’t have the CPU spawn there?

    It still baffles me to this day how they introduced echo fighters as a way to include characters for zero effort and then did nothing with it. Ken is the only outlier, but it’s to a point where he shouldn’t even be an echo fighter. Like with the costumes, this is literally a gold mine. Consider a character like Big Boss from Metal Gear: he looks the same as Snake, shares all of Snake’s moves, and even has the same voice actor, all they would need to change is put an eyepatch on his model and give him different colors. Insane how Nintendo goes the extra mile in some regards and is impeccably lazy in others.

    • @DANCERcow
      @DANCERcow Před 11 měsíci +5

      You mean clone characters that have always been in the series that you all hated right? It's cute you lot want clone characters after they simply changed the title from clone to echo lol the average attention span of a smash player is less than a goldfish! Goldfish has an attention span of up to 5 months!

    • @brendanhughes5679
      @brendanhughes5679 Před 11 měsíci +15

      @@DANCERcow Don't really understand what you're trying to say. They advertised echo fighters as characters that wouldn't take up a lot of development time, so fan favorites that didn't quite make the cut as a fully fledged fighter could still make it in, but with a new echo fighter distinction, now there would be no confusion as to whether or not a clone character stole the slot of a completely unique fighter. So, why not completely cash out with the idea? They had two ported over from Smash 4, and introduced five new ones, and that's it. It's a novel idea, so I don't understand why they would introduce it pre-release and then never acknowledge it again. Nearly everyone online made speculations about an echo fighter's pass that never came to be.
      And for the record, Nintendo never officially donned the name "clones" for these characters pre-Ultimate, that was a community thing. The community and Nintendo had different ideas on what a clone is anyway, seeing how Dr. Mario was considered a clone before Ultimate by the community, but not officially coined as an echo fighter.
      All I'm saying is it's wasted potential. By the way, goldfish have an average attention span of 9 seconds, don't know where you got 5 months from. And yes, it is a scientific fact that humans on average have a shorter attention span than goldfish, clocking in at 8 seconds. I agree Smash players are brainless, but don't group me up with them.

    • @MerryBlind
      @MerryBlind Před 11 měsíci +2

      Agreed. I was fully expecting an Echo Fighter Pass to happen at some point, cheaper than the full Fighter Passes we got, but it never happened.
      The minimal differences between echoes and their original counterparts is also disappointing. It would have been so easy to slightly tweak some parameters to make them a bit more unique without much effort.

    Some things you covered but some other things I figured I'd add on lol:
    Movement Sucks!
    - Can't run off platforms without getting stuck sometimes
    - Can't drop from platforms while running
    - Can't easily cancel initial dash. So you can't dash dance normally, you have to spam left and right extremely fast in order to do it.
    Combat:
    - Mashing out of a grab is the worst defensive mechanic ever. After your mash, you will probably do a random attack afterwards. It should've just been directional based like Virtua Fighter. If you guess the direction fast enough, you tech the throw.
    - 8 way Directional Airdodges makes less 50/50 situations, less reads
    - Nintendo thought we wanted 8 Way directional air dodges, but that was ONLY because of wavedashing
    - Less Hitstun for some characters
    - Most weak grabs don't guarantee combos
    - Roll input priority, so sometimes you get a roll accidentally during combat
    - Terrible training mode, can't practice real combos/setups without a modded Switch
    - Parry doesn't freeze other players long enough to perform proper punishes. So your parry doesn't always guarantee a punish ()
    - Parry doesn't reflect projectiles
    - Wavedashing is nerfed. Instead of just giving people the OPTION
    - Ledge options are too fast. There are 4 options you would have to cover, leading to a 25/25/25/25 situation.
    Online:
    - LAN Adapter 20$, (Good Gamecube Controller 100$), Nintendo Online - 5$/month
    - Input Delay is HORRIBLE
    - Terrible Netcode
    - No Easy way to Voice Chat - have to download an App
    Characters:
    - Tether recoveries are extremely fast and have a wide range to recover making them unbalanced
    - Some are too small to hit consistently
    - Unbalanced
    - Weak characters don't get necessary buffs
    - Not all characters are fast enough to get OTG (On the Ground) reads. i.e Doctor Mario. So specific characters are just better at this than others
    - Campy characters (Projectile Spam or Sonic's speed being able to time you out)
    - Echo Fighters aren't much of a difference
    - No DLC Costumes
    Competitive:
    - Nintendo pulls Smash from EVO
    - No Support from Nintendo for Competitive scene
    - Official Nintendo Tourney Prize Rewards are NINTENDO POINTS instead of Cash prizes... wtf??
    - eSports sponsors are becoming less and less due to Nintendo's lack of support
    Replay-ability:
    - No Subspace Emissary-style adventure mode
    - Nothing much else that's fun/exciting to do except play online
    - (If using a Gamecube Controller) Your controller will stop working optimally around 2-3 months so it will cost you at least 40$ for a new one every month unless you get a 100$ Phobb Controller (or a 60-70$ Phobb conversion kit)
    Official Dev Support:
    - No communication from Nintendo about the game. Only when new characters were coming
    - Terrible Patch notes
    - More nerfs than Buffs. Make weaker Characters stronger

    The fact we have to pay for online, when it's this horrible is insane. The worst part is that it is a *PEER TO PEER* connection. They literally do not even have to pay to host server space for matches. They only have to pay for servers for the menus and information displayed about online. Peer to peer literally just connects your internet to the other guy's. We pay 5 dollars a month just to foot a huge chunk of the server load using our own internet connections. It is insane. I could at least understand if they had servers you could connect to because then the lag would not be nearly as bad either. The input would still suck but at least both people would have a consistent connection and when one lags the other is still free to act.

Same thing with DLC being abhorrent and ridiculously overtuned. Pre-Bayo Smash 4 was an infinitely better game, but they kill these games on purpose so you feel inclined to by the "new and improved next entry". The only good thing they did with this entry was Battle Arenas and actually giving you movement options on the ground so tilts are actually viable.

    Input delay sucked, but the buffer was even worse. Platforms were super sticky too. If they re-released this with rollback, no buffer, and less input delay I'd probably buy two copies. If they added DLC costumes (I seriously believe Nintendo doesn't care about profit because this was practically free money that they said no to) I'd buy every single one of them. Oh, separate smash/tilt and jump/shorthop buttons would be freaking amazing too. I'd probably buy four copies at that point.

Instead, you end up pushing them regardless of how fast you are. Besides the input delay, lack of wavedash, and overall bad movement options, the worst offender for Smash Ult imo is the HORRENDOUS character representation. Yes, there is an enormous roster ("everyone is here") but only a handful of characters genuinely feel unique. Playing Rivals after playing Smash for so long felt like a breath of fresh air, even with a whole-ass FIFTH of the character roster. All the characters felt deep from the start, with many different playstyles for each character. Ultimate doesn't need L-cancelling or anything like that, it just needs a major rework with someone at the helm open to real competitive balancing and ideas.

  • @Caldwing

    For the patches, although they do give a nod to pro/high level players (at least moreso than they used to) in patches, I suspect they still primarily balance the game based on online stats. I think it only looks like they pay attention to competition because players like Leo are very influential and many high level and wanna be high level players will be copying his character choices.
    The nerfs they gave out to Little Mac and some other character who are barely competition viable only make sense if you take into account that at a low level of play, Characters like Little Mac and even Ganondorf are actually quite OP. In such games they are basically just randomly flailing at eachother until the other dies, and having a character who hits really hard is the most important variable in such a fight. Pikachu got buffs because for a huge percentage of players Pikachu is terrible. I mean I'm generally pretty ok at video games and I had to play this game for years before small, fast characters felt viable at all.
    I think a lot of Smash players who have been playing since the N64 don't fully realize how much they have internalized those basic Smash skills over the years and just how bad at the game the average player is. Like your average player probably literally never hits shield or grab.

    IMO the other BIG issue that has existed from day one next to input lag - the platform physics! What the hell did they do these platforms? Like the input lag, we have all gotten used to this by now, but there's no reason for the platforms to feel so ridiculously sticky. I feel like they designed and tested the game with on much faster machines than the Switch hardware (less input lag) and with shield dropping, then changed both at the last minute.

      It's something that gets easier, I think what actually sucks is you don't have a stream lined sheild drop. Platform play takes a lot of execution because of that. There's just no sheild drop. But I do understand what you mean, dropping through the platforms is hard and it makes them feel so insanely sticky.
      The solution to making them a little nicer to drop through is to practice a quarter circle backwards input, or what Melee players call an "Isah drop" and you need to do it pretty fast tbh. That's what makes it so strict, but it does get a tiny bit easier with practice. Promise

    besides inherent game design like online or input delay, I think a lot of this and other issues stems from the game trying to cater to comp or hardcore while maintaining being a casual game. You either need to find the perfect balance which ult almost reached but needs a few tweeks or just go all in/lean into one side more. LIke training mode and some patches are obv made with more hardcore players in mind but they never fully committed to fleshed them out.
    I also think later down the line they became negligent or at least didnt care to cater anymore as if u think about it, a character like steve does not need to be as strong as they are for casual play. Sure having a strong character can be fun but whats more fun is just using a character who is. According to social media, the ideal smash experience is singleplayer content or items ffa which that wouldn't matter in relation to character's strength. They should have balanced characters around comp while making them unique for casuals. Thats the perfect balance and commitment they failed to reach and I sorta hope they have an Ultimate deluxe or something so they can rectify it. I dont blame sakurai and his crew as they had a direction while also throwing some bones to us + trying to manage everything in a game like ultimate is hard so next game they can just focus on narrowing down how to make a good game in terms of gameplay rather than appeal since it would already be there

    Somehow this is the first I heard of the 6 frame input delay and my entire experience is clicking in place. It always felt like the game was so behind and I assumed it was because I didn't know how to work around the buffer system (which is still probably the case). Putting a drift aerial where I want it still seems impossible. In addition I always felt all those flashy animations and effects often didn't like up with where the object actually was. It got worse with the patches but I always felt like spacing around swords and fists to attempt a whiff punish was just a good way to get hit. The pocket of air nearby was just as lethal I guess.

    I play Marth/Lucina, and I hate how many characters with stretchy limbs outrange the length of my entire arm and sword. Like it's bad enough that people play this game by spamming projectiles while still having very lethal attacks at melee range, but I've seen so many kill zooms where 0% of the opponent's model is touching me.
    Everyone with a sex kick may as well be Luigi from Melee, multi-hit moves that drag you into them are annoying, but seriously I'm traumatized of the little glancing blow spark.

    I'm really, really surprised that the single player wasn't brought up once.
    The single player was atrocious and there wasn't a mention to that at all.

      @HylianWindRider Před 11 měsíci +1

      How so?

    • @Wiggimus
      @Wiggimus Před 11 měsíci +4

      @@HylianWindRider First, they took out a lot of what made the single player great. Things like Break the Targets and event matches are completely gone. They made no attempt at trying to replace them, they're just outright gone.
      Secondly, it has the single worst classic mode to appear in a Smash Bros. You don't even get to fight Master Hand as most of the roster. In fact, they completely removed the "arcade aspects" to the classic mode and they made it so the fights you do as each specific character is set in stone. Meaning that they removed all variability, which kept the mode fresh in older titles.
      As an aside, they also removed the trophies. This was a monumentally bad decision. It gave you legitimately *nothing* to collect in the game! Don't even get me started on the "Spirits". They're just the stickers from Brawl, but worse because they're all you have now. Trophies were great because they had unique descriptions and gave insight into the history of various games. Plus, classic mode and All-Star Mode each had different trophies that each had different descriptions, giving you a reason to actually use the different characters in the different modes. By removing the trophies, they removed any motivation to explore any single player game mode even once.
      Lastly, World of Light was such an insult. It was like they gave a half-hearted attempt at event matches, but in a way that lets you turn the "event" part off. So now you have basic matches that aren't at all special, where you don't earn anything worthwhile for your efforts. It has none of the depth and creativity of Melee's Adventure Mode or Brawl's Subspace Emissary, nor does it have any of the unpredictable chaos of the Smash Run from Smash 3D. Hell, Smash Tour in Smash Bros U was better than WoL and that was guided by RNG!
      It's as if the developers didn't even try. I swear, the actual development time for SSBU had to have been less than a year, because the entire game feels unfinished. It feels like a game that was made by people who have no idea what Smash Bros is, only using secondhand knowledge of the game from people who didn't even know how to play it.
      This game is irredeemably bad and is one of the absolute worst first-party titles Nintendo has ever released.

    The garbage balancing is the worst part of the game. How, despite several balance patches, has ganondorf always been the worst charaacter? How do they justify buffing top tiers and nerfing low tiers? And how did they justify putting kazuya, with all his insane attributes, in the same game as ganondorf, who has glaring weaknesses and few redeeming qualities?

    Idk why they lowered everybody's cool down frames on almost every attack. Not being able to punish moves that you would think are punishable just feels like awful fighting game design. The game is fun, don't get me wrong, but I think they tried to appeal to melee players a bit too much. For example, I get why some smash attacks are kinda safe to just throw out, but not almost every single one. Why can Lucina fsmash in my face and slightly whiff, but still be able to shield? I just left things at "well maybe I'm bad at microspacing, after all, I was a little too far away to realistically punish them." Ever since, I've been working on microspacing and which moves I can realistically punish in a scrap, but damn does it feel bad watching even top players go to try and punish a move that they think is punishable. Neutral in this game can feel like either 2 rams crashing into each other, or 2 walls refusing to budge. My greatest example will always be how sonic can't punish Ness for using pk thunder while being close to him. Ig it depends on your definition of close

    • @bobboberson8297
      @bobboberson8297 Před 11 měsíci +3

      The game has stiff movement and a lot of input lag so by the time you can actually do anything in game as a reaction your opponent is already safe. Weak defensive techniques and a nerfed shield grab mean your best defense is often spamming moves back lol

    • @jonnyc3905
      @jonnyc3905 Před 11 měsíci

      To clarify my last example, I watched a set of Sonix fighting a Ness player on Smashville and failing to punish Ness after using an aerial pk thunder, then briefly landing on the middle plat. I would consider Sonix to be relatively close to Ness to get a punish, but it's honeslty open to interpretation. Basically, Sonix goes to punish the aerial pk thunder landing lag with an up air, but couldn't get there in time. Afterwards, TKbreezy was like "we need to nerf that move!!" Does anybody know what match I'm talking about?? I just thought that Sonix should have been able to get the punish

    "input delay" OH MY GOOOOOOOOD
    I am a casual player, I have no history, background, or knowledge on this topic, but I absolutely felt this since I've been playing the game for the 5 years it's been out and thought I was going crazy. I always play online so I thought maybe it's just Nintendo's servers sucking as they are known to do but I couldn't pin it down since it acted like no lag I've ever seen before. I finally get what's happening. Thank you so much.

    One of the things I can't stand is when your standing next to or behind someone and because of the stupid mechanic that doesn't let you run through someone, even animations of smash attacks or someone just being in front of you can make you miss a punish or a grab. Or sometimes if you try to land close you'll teleport left or right since you can't go through them

    For the DLC costumes, it would be cool if some of them were other characters, like Alph with Olimar. Like, make a Funky Kong costume for DK, a Dry Bowser costume for Bowser, Crystal for one of the Star Fox guys, Hawlucha for Incineroar, Octoling for Inkling, Birdo for Yoshi, etc., alongside some which are the same character like ToTK Ganondorf or one of the new Peach outfits in her new game Showtime!. I wish your suggestion could come true now, because this concept coulda been so cool

    To be fair to Ultimate costumes have always been an issue with Smash. By Brawl they absolutely should've had costume representation, but it always felt like they shortcut it by just making them different palettes. I mean Mario can have his wedding outfit from Odyssey, why not take it further? There are so many missed opportunities for references they can use for character alts. They could also do the Ike approach too, where you can switch between his Radiant Dawn/Path of Radiance and Brawl alt, so why can't say Link be any version of him you want to be? Or Ms. Pacman for Pacman? Or the many sports games for the Mario crew?

Friends were telling me how rusty I am on it but I can't bring myself to practice when I have options like SF6 and Strive now.
