  • Vintage Toys - Part #1 - Marx Mystery Space Ship. This is a very interesting toy from the 1950s and 1960s. They were not very common at the time in the UK. I first saw one of these when I was 11 years old, and finally 57 years later I now have a nice example in my modest collection.

Loved this toy when I was younger. My brother and I would play with it for hours. Was reminded of it when I picked up a roomba to clean it

My late older brother got one of these for Christmas when he was about 7 years old. I think he wore it out fairly quick, lost interest in it and then passed it on to me. The timing was good as once Lost in Space premiered , the yellow gyroscope saucer became my imaginary Jupiter 2. I put a lot more miles on it after it was broken then he did when it was working ! Thanks for sharing this. The saucer and the box brings back great memories.

Trivia: the toy was made in Wailes England. This toy was used to produce the signature "windup sound" of the Tasmanian Devil of Loony Toons cartoon fame.

Oh, wow! I haven't even _thought_ about this toy in over 40 years! I had one, my dad had got it second hand in a box of stuff at an auction, I think... I played with it a lot! Eventually, like all curious tinkerers, I took it apart to see what made it tic. No idea what happened to it after that. This was wonderful, thank you! ;-]

I received one of these for Christmas. It was one of my favorite toys. At some point it cracked. At that point I cut holes where the windows are on the space ship so I could see it working. Funny, but I don't remember anything about the accessories. All I remember is the space ship and the hand crank.

My stepfather retired from Sperry Gyroscope in 1960, and I believe he bought mine through an offer in the retiree newsletter. I still have it, and it works great. Luckily, unlike a lot of my other toys, I did not take it apart as a child to see how it worked. Thank you for doing that for me. Mine will now remain safe for another 20 years.

  • @robertweldon7909

I don't remember this toy. Toys, like this, were usually quite simple and appealed to young curious minds. I usually lost interest in toys like this quickly, causing my mom to stop buying them.
What the children didn't realize was that they were getting a physics lesson about centrifugal force, the principal that keeps a bicycle upright, a much more appealing toy.
    Happy birthday Keith. ;-)

Thank you I had one as a youth, but was forbidden from taking it apart. Years later one of my second cousins broke it, while I was not there and it got trashed before I found out, so I am glad to finally see what is inside one.

Thanks for this! I still have my Mystery Space Ship, but sadly it feels like the gears are stripped. If I had your patience, I would take it apart and try to fix it. Wish some toy company would re-manufacture these. I think even computer head kids today would love it.

Blimey thats a blast from the past. We had one of these as kids. My dad tried to explain how they worked (he worked for Sperry Gyro compasses) but as 5 year old the physics were way beyond me (still are). I remember the clear plastic covers getting damaged very quickly and we lost the little figures in a sandpit

I can imagine the "spares" flywheel and gearbox mounted to a frame, perhaps using modern ceramic bearings, and cranked by a walking beam engine. I don't know to what end, my imagination is quite limited. Very nice that the good one even has the instructions. Thanks for the return trip to the past.

Man, I love vintage toys. They're so simple and clever, and you get to see snapshots of cheap manufacturing technologies over time. I suspect this is a common sentiment among engineering types.

Believe it or not, the ISS has two of these installed, they keep the station on course as it orbits the earth! No really they do, they aren't made of plastic though, they are made of metal and electric motors keep them spinning. I never saw this toy when I was growing up in the 50s but I did have a Gilbert steam engine! Keith, you can actually weld plastic! Go to any auto body shop and they will show you their welding outfit. They use it to repair plastic bumpers and dash boards and the like. They have different colors plus special rods for polystyrene. It basically works like a glue gun, which in fact could have used as well.
