It is a joke to call this film "an important love story." Yes, it was groundbreaking to see a mainstream Hollywood film about a gay relationship. “Why does he have to be gay?”
This question infuriates me 😖,
I have heard it all my life ,
PEOPLE YOU DONT CHOOSE TO BE GAY ,
YOU ARE BORN GAY!!
Not so fast! Psychology tells us the overwhelming majority of people have the capacity for both hetero- and homosexual relationships. However, it's not all 50 - 50. Some people have a stronger "yearning" towards one sexuality than the other. It's all about choice...and make the choice that is best for you, regardless of your inclinations. In other words, do the right thing that is best for you. Remember, there are societal pressures and rejections for choosing a certain lifestyle. Would it be worth it to go through all that. Also, we all have an unconscious mind and it can generate negative feelings, depression, anger, nightmares, etc. because of what we do on the conscious level. Are you willing to deal with all that?...Is it worth it. Yes, there are people who are 100% hetero- or homosexual, but they are in the extremes, not the vast majority of the human population.
Bottom line: Do what HONESTLY gives you peace of mind and makes you feel good about yourself. It's your choice and your life.

@Evyatar Hadar according to the numbers? That's around 73% the case. So yes, quite the logic indeed.
@Heiliger Katholik there is a huge difference between "not liking" homosexuality, and being homophobic.
Homosexuals have no desire to create other homosexuals. Homophobes have a desire to create other homophobes. And they do that with homosexuals.
People who are not homosexual and aren't against it, just can't be bothered and will never become homophobes.
73% of homophobes (people who actively use their power to deny homosexuals their rights and freedoms) are estimated to have homosexual tendencies, and even come out later in life.

I'm a straight while male with a wife and baby and I fully support this.
I watched this movie home alone when I was 13. To this day, it is the only movie that I didn't fidget through, I didn't pause, and as soon as the credits rolled, burst into tears. I sobbed like a baby for 30 mintues. I was shocked and at the time disturbed by my own reaction. I'm 26 now, and this is still the only time I've cried like that after a film. It was beautiful, heartbreaking, tender and important. I've never watched it since, scared of my own reaction. But almost every scene remains ingrained in my mind. I've heard many times that it's changed the way others see gay people and queer romance. I can only hope it's done some good for those who are part of the LGBT+ community or those who need to understand it better. I know so many people say "I'm straight, but..." I am, but I don't think it matters. Love is complicated and difficult, and a love that is attacked from all sides by a society that is callous and cruel and beliefs inside oneself that affect that is something that we should never stop shining a light on. It wasn't just a "gay cowboy movie", it was a fucking GOOD movie, and something that I hope stays in our memory for a long time. I hope one day I recover enough to watch it again and appreciate it even more.
It's not the love that is the problem. It's the grudge being carried against love for women that is.
This is the best way you can put homosexuality into the forefront, "why do we have to discuss the disgust of people LOVING one another? shouldn't we discuss HATE and VIOLENCE towards one another?". Heath is the epitome of class, respect and humanity, I love and respect him like no other. 🙏💖

In a way, I somewhat dislike that this topic is always answered by emphasising the love aspect, as an appeal to the kinder side of those asking the question. I'm far more confrontational about responding to it.... yes, people like to fuck others of the same sex. Don't like it? Tough shit. That's not meaning that I think homosexuality is solely about sex, but as a bi guy I take the stance that people can feel whatever they like about it, but in the end, it's just none of their fucking business what consenting adults do when they're having sex together.
The movie literally touched my heart and the ending of it was painfully emotional.
He’s a beautiful person. This makes him more beautiful.
Beautiful only on the outside
I guess you’re only able to recognize external beauty, for sure because he’s handsome. But you’re lacking when it comes to judging of character. Anybody that defends basic human rights and acts humanely is a beautiful person. Just in case you need to be taught the basics, there you go.

Sir Larselot the reporter wasn’t homophobic lol he was asking a question based on what other people have stated about the movie.
@TheRenaissanceman65 , i really did but i just noticed my negligence after your intervention. I didn't realized that i didn't wrote the letter "s" after grandfather for the plural. I wanted to give my opinion about these ancient thoughts about homosexuality the reporter was asking for, that's from the times of our grandfathers. So i was misleading and you thought i meant the reporter. Thanks for pointing this out, i have corrected my writing failure. Shit happens.

I love how he words this entire answer. He never missed a beat, homophobia is such a useless feeling too. There are so many other things to hate in this world that is hurtful or demoralizing.
this got recommended to me somehow, maybe because i'm both a heath ledger fan and queer person. i paused my studying and music and watched in the moment i laid eyes on it. i was a bit anxious, but i ended up crying while watching it and reading some of the comments. this was so many years ago, and he spoke better than most people do nowadays about homosexuality. this man is truly a legend, and will live forever in our hearts. we lost him way too soon, yet that always seems to be the case with amazing people like him...
The thing about homosexuality, people always focus on sex. They never address the emotional component of two men in love which is no different to a man or woman in love, or two women. Nothing about it is unnatural, but again, people can only focus on sexual acts and the fact that nothing can be 'born' from gay relationships. People need to start seeing homosexuality more in line with the deepest bonds of friendship, instead of sex... and then nobody will be able to say it is unnatural.
Well said

Exactly!
i'm still struggling to understand exactly what the psychology is that causes people to feel homophobic and I think you hit the nail on the head, a lot of it has to do with sex, sex seems to be such a sensitive issue to all humans and seems to cause such a complex tangle of emotions, i'm not fully sure why that's the case with people and how it links with our evolution, but it seems to be the case

He said it right: shouldn’t be be voicing our opinions on hate and not love? Who someone sleeps with is no ones business because we know you’re unhappy in your own relationship or just trying to make it to the next day.
If it's nobody's business, then why are they making movies about it? Why is homosexuality being shoved down society's throat constantly? Just keep your sexual behavior to yourself. Nobody cares. Yet homosexuals feel the need to impose their alternative lifestyles on everyone else. THAT is the bore.

"Why is homosexuality being shoved down society's throat constantly?" Umm it isn't. The LGBT community is simply trying to portray love stories. If I see a movie and the couple is heterosexual I don't feel like heterosexuality being shoved down my throat. Stop being scared you can't catch "being gay". If you don't like homosexuality then don't watch the movie.
Pretty simple solution.

what a wonderful reply ..good for you heath...
What a refreshingly ‘unHollywood’ response, the guy just sounds so downright decent and chilled about the question. A great loss, gone far too soon.
Hollywood has always been liberal. Further, casting is all about who you know. Being politically savvy, diplomatic, and liberal is kind of the status quo for the industry. It’d be more un-Hollywood if he said “screw your opinion and this libtard movie I’m paid to promote/justify/defend”.
Anyway. Not trying to cheapen what he said, it was well spoken, but I wouldn’t exactly call it unbiased or un-Hollywood. It’s not like he said Taiwan was a country or anything

@Brazilian Goddess I rewatched it yesterday, the second time after it came out in 2005, it's a good movie that marked me!!
@Brazilian Goddess ah you're missing out on good cinema avoiding romance like that, often romance is just a part of it, like in The Count of Monte Cristo, a revenge film but the romantic scenes are so sweet and well done.
@Brazilian Goddess Aw awesome no worries , it's a great watch :) (if you want to really get into it watch the 1934 version as well as the 2002), the adventure and romance go hand in hand, try to avoid thinking that you're putting up with one for the other.
