I would like to add something useful to this review. We've got both readers as the reviews were great. Keeping an open mind to anything and attached to nothing we decided to return the kindle for these reasons:
-Libra H2O is $199 while Oasis is $330
    - screens are not different, they are both perfect and adjustable, not sure why this video shows them in different light? So if the screen is something you worry about... don't.
-in Canada, Europe and Australia 99% of Kindle's functions are useless and don't work. With Kobo we were able to borrow books from any US, Canadian or Euro library.
    -Kobo renders more formats effortlessly
    -no distracting adds on Kobo

@@Dmwntkp99 - Oasis still doesn't render .epub files, the most common format for eBooks out there. Buying a Kindle device is like buying an iPod that can't play .mp3 music files: your device won't "play" the majority of content files available from different sources. Don't buy an Oasis unless you are fully committed to buying/renting all of your books from Amazon. Amazon is good, but there are a gazillion books available from other sources that you can't get via Amazon.

Just switched from Kindle Paperwhite to Kobo Libra and I LOVE IT, I don't have any screen issues, I love pocket integration and the fact that I don't need to convert epub books anymore!
    *Update:*
After two months of daily usage, I still like the Kobo but I noticed one thing that bothers me: the highlighting is laggy! I don't know if it's because of the books I'm copying or it's just like that, I miss the Kindle's smooth highlighting (I had a Paperwhite before), I'll see if there is any solution
    *Update2:*
Wow! Found it! I had to convert epub to kepub, now the to respond to page turn gestures is much quicker and text selection/highlighting is much faster.
kepubify or Calibre can be used to convert epub to kepub

In Australia is $250 for the Kobo and $400 for the Kindle. I don't think the Kindle price is justifiable; Kobo seems to have more perks on top of it.

      @kbhasi Před 4 lety +1

I agree! In fact, I do know what some of those perks are! One of those being that Kobo's ecosystem is more than that of Kindle.
I used to not like Kobo, until they introduced a new reading UI in late 2019, and it seems to just be getting better from there. However, I do hope they bring more options to their tablet app, as I primarily read on a Likebook, but bought a used Kobo Aura as a temporary e-reader while I wait for that to get repaired.

Also, Kindle has a better keyboard than kobo, But I installed Koreader and the problem solved. I do miss the option to export my notes & highlights. but I am working on it. I'm leaning more towards Kobo Libra due that I read mostly nonfiction, the integrated Overdrive library feature, and it's a better value (but not by a lot). I admit, per this review, the text clarity and even lighting looks better on the Oasis. Also, from a competitive marketplace standpoint, I do wish there were more competition in ereader manufacturers, and would rather support the underdog, Kobo, vs the Amazon bohemoth. Thanks for the review.

    • @DeepishMoog
      @DeepishMoog Před 4 lety +4

Update: I wasnt content with the frequency of screen issues (uneven lighting mostly, dark band on button side of screen) reported by Kobo customers in their two flagship 7" ereaders, so I bought a Kindle Voyage (6", good backlighting, glass screen, but now discontinued by Amazon) to tie me over for the moment until Kobo strsightens out their screen issues or otherwise releases a superior product. However, I have not and do not intend to feed the Amazon ebook sales monopoly. I have pretty easily found books elsewhere to add to the Voyage that cost no or little money. The Gutenberg Project website was pretty good, and I found they have many books I would read in multiple formats, both mobi and kindle format with and without images. I will also be checking into Library of Congress digital books, as well as borrowing ebooks from my county library. Having to use another app to do so on my laptop then transfer them to my ereader is a not a big deal. I would have really enjoyed a 7" screen mind you with an integrated library borrow app.

The Oasis is the better, more polished device, but it's price point is very nearly offensive. The screen lighting is just second to none among all ereaders and the Kindle is just so much smoother than the Libra and Libra H2O. Pay particular attention to the quality of the "natural" lighting (intended for night reading), Amazon really nailed that feature. In fact they are the only ones who got it right. And their device quality is consistant. I think in the final analysis it comes down to how much you read. If you are a book worm as I am, one can more easily justify the expense of the Oasis. And I can certainly understand your concerns regarding geographic based features, but I got around that by simply creating an Amazon.com (i.e. US based) account which allows me to access the Audible audio books for example, something which has not yet been rolled out in Canada.

My Kobo Libra screen is awesome - I like the color temperature range better than the Oasis, and I also like the feel of the device in my hand much better than the Oasis. Neither of them fit into a trouser pocket. Also, the Kobo's position sensor will automatically turn the screen to landscape mode if you don't have the screen locked to one orientation or the other. The expanded ability to adjust font and text size on my Kobo is also really useful for certain books and tired eyes.
The big thing however is that the Kobo renders more eBook file formats. Kindle devices are locked into Amazon's proprietary file formats and PDF files only. The Kobo can render an Amazon .mobi file AND the more widespread Adobe .epub format files. And ... I use my Library extensively, so the built-in ability to check-out an ebook from my Library is very nice. I don't have to use a computer to do it.
I can't take any Kindle model seriously when they don't even render the most common format of eBook files, but lucky for me, the Kobo Libra is a better device for less money anyway (IMHO).

Especially if u r not a native English-speaking man, u will definitely find the dictionaries in kindle more comfortable the same with keyboard and finally taking notes and highlights, export them, etc. No one can say that kobo libra is better than Oasis! If u r an avid reader and you intend to use it more than an hour per day then go for Oasis. It has a better battery too. I regret buying the libra. I read more than 3h per day. I should have wait to save 130 euros in order to take the Kindle Oasis. - Translator
    - A complete ad-free Home Screen (after turning store features off)
    - Flush Display
    - Disable Touch Screen

    - Reading stats

    - No Useless “Goodreads” and “Store” button in the toolbar, instead displays useful settings like orientation, and reading stats

The evenly lit screen just.. works. I appreciate the screen being flush because wiping it clean is seamless (no pun intended). Now there’s book cover wallpapers, recently added to every kindle without ads! And sure, I do miss the brightness slider on right side of page, but I don’t miss the reading stats.. they were nice but not necessary. Overdrive directly on the Libra was convenient but I’m okay with using the Libby app. Pocket integration was nice but not necessary as I don’t miss it personally.

Thank you for the review, I enjoyed the informative walk through both devices' user interface. Here's my personal feedback on the Kobo Libra H2O I just returned.
    Hardware issues:
    - The screen lighting made for a green-gray hue that diminished contrast.
    - The lighting was uneven, darker on the side of the handle.
    - The official sleepcover failed to put the device to sleep.
    Software issues:
    - There were frequent freezes that required a reboot.
    - The selection of multilingual dictionaries was too narrow (I am French and need a German-French dictionary).
    - Highlighting was laggy to the point of being unusable.
All in all I feel like Kobo needs better quality assurance. That's too bad, because I like the wealth of settings they offer, and I would rather not sponsor Amazon. Also, I like that the Libra is available in white: it allows you to reduce margins to a minimum, to maximize screen usage, without the text looking "hemmed in" by a black frame.
