  • It's just about the toughest job in any pro sports league. Being the senior coach of a team can lead to some people going mad. Even some of the best former and current day coaches have let the rage take a hold of them.

    I think if coaches gave players a spray too often it'd lose effectiveness

    Michael Malthouse wasn't that way at West Coast. Maybe it was the warm weather, 10 consecutive finals and 2 Premierships or he got cranky with age?

    Unfortunately there's hardly any characters left in the AFL anymore and if one does let themselves of the hook and stop following the script the media all follow each other and hang them in the press.
    Sadly by the same media standards, having a mullet haircut is edgy.
    Sure the tattoos have got bigger but when everyone has tatts from their neck to their toes it's fashion not a statement, same with the mohawk hairstyle..
    Every single player gives the exact same answers to the same questions
    Because their taught how to handle the press and not get caught out and become tomorrow's back page so they give stale answers, like mindless drones..
    Ted Whitten would be a criminal these days because of his passion.
    Sure some coaches and players have crossed this imaginary line that appeared couple of decades ago.
    BUT! Sticks and stones. It's only words.
    Sticks and stones.

    Delivering an angry spray when warranted is fine if the words being used are constructive or positive and in no way abusive. From the footage I've seen of Barassi, it was pretty much all personal abuse. I know things were different but even in those days, that may have led to more resentment than respect. Obviously a Premiership or two would soften things with genuine praise and congrats when that is also warranted. You can be tough as long as you're fair.

    I don't think there anything wrong about coaches giving his players and almighty spray. An attempt to fire them up, put the fear of god in them and put some fire in the belly. Within reason they should unleash the spray, not to put the players down, but as motivator. Coaches are not only there to develop a team and make it as successful as possible, but also encouraging and get them playing as best as possible.

    You are commenting from a girls position, to play any elite sport you have to be able to take criticism, if you can’t ( we know what happens, you leave)
    You young people making these videos have no idea how life in the real world works. The strong survive, the weak lose.
    Has been that way forever and will be forever

    • @taliamason7986
      @taliamason7986 Před 3 měsíci +3

      Historically that was very true in times of wars but nowadays in times of peace there is very very little reason for that mentality given the sheer amount of awareness we now have on mental health and the years of research that is now teaching societies much better and far more effective ways to manage and get the best out of people be it at elite level sport or the work place in general. It simply boils down to getting with the times and when its comes to elite level sport Coaches and Managers are simply expected to be good man-managers instead of borderline dictators like most of them historically used to be. It doesn't mean the modern Coach can't criticise their players. That very much still happens but ultimately the criticism recieved is far more constructive and therefore considerably more helpful towards the players and their development. How can you possibly deem that to be a negative thing?
