    It has been nearly 20 years since I visited this Hochosterwitz Castle. The video brings a new perspective to the stills I have of that visit. But even it pales in comparison to an in person visit. The public areas have been expanded and improved a lot. The extensive armaments shown in various rooms that appear to be open to the public were limited to a smaller sampling in 2002. No cannons were displayed. I did recognize a VERY large suit of armor that was there when I visited. seen about 5:13 in the video. There is an interesting story that the guide tells about that suit of armor. If you visit be certain you ask them about it.
    To truly experience this magnificent castle you need to walk the entry way path from the ground up. The way a visiting dignitary or invading a soldier would. It is not a fairy tale castle but a fortress that is stunning in both form and function.

    Ich war vor über 35 Jahren als Bub mit meiner Familie in Österreich im Urlaub. Und damals war ich auch auf der Burg gewesen, ihren Namen habe ich nie vergessen und das Sie den ganzen Weg Bergauf sehr viele und verschiedene Tore hatte. Was glaube ich sehr einzigartig ist. Ich kann mich aber noch erinnern das in der Burg damals eine Lebensechte Nachbildung eines der damaligen Burg Vogten dort ausgestellt wurde. Die Figur war über 2m groß und er schien mir wie ein Riese zu sein. Leider habe ich in dem Video ihn nicht gesehen. Ob er nach über 35 Jahren noch immer dasteht. Der Name Hochosterwitz und der Riesige Burg Vogt sind für immer in meinem Gedächtnis geblieben.

      Neuschwanstein isn't an original medieval castle, it was build in the 19th century from scratch. Hochosterwitz on the other hand was indeed already an medieval castle, some fortifications were added in the 16th century.

    • @henryshockem9242
      @henryshockem9242 Před 2 lety +1

      @@rizzochuenringe669 So it's not a medieval castle, so what. It's still awesome and fascinating. The construction and the art work, the grotto, the fountains. They are all so majestic. Definately worthy of royalty. Fit for a King. I visited Neuschwanstein when I was only 16 years old and I am 60 now. It made an impression on me that has lasted a lifetime. I hope to return to my beloved Bavaria one day. I consider it my adopted homeland. Hochosterwitz is stunning as well. So please don't try and start a debate on which one is better. They both have individual beauty and uniqueness. So one is older, big deal. That don't mean that it is better. It just means it's older. That's it.

    Today Hochosterwitz has 15 (!) gates to pass. Those days many people paid with their lives or health on one of the old 14 gates. Today people pay a way more moderate price on the 15th gate - and a not so painful one 😄
    (by the way - the entry fee is absolutely ok. They have to keep that jewel in good conditions)

    It appears larger on the outside, more of a fortress than castle imo. Interesting how the ceiling was built with sculpted logs affixed on the walls which had a large "shelf" to place the logs on both sides. The armory was also very packed, I wonder if that was really where they stored equipment or it's just where they found a place to display the weapons from various periods in history. Cool experience anyway.

    It's the real-life Eyrie of the Vale!
    You know, the ancient Westerosi Castle, (and seat of House Arryn, one of the oldest lines of Andal nobility,) within the Vale of Arryn.
    Situated in the Mountains of the Moon on a shoulder of the peak known as the Giant's Lance, several thousand feet above the valley below.
    Although small compared to the seats of other Great Houses in Westeros, the Eyrie is considered impregnable to attack.
    During wintertime, the Arryns seek refuge against the cold in the Gates of the Moon at the base of the mountain.
    Enemies of the House often finding themselves locked up in the infamous Sky Cells.
