Barry Norman was so good - he knew how to handle the notoriously prickly Sir Alec Guinness

You have to live the old school proper actors. Alec Guinness, Peter Cushing, Peter O’Toole, John Gielgud, all those guys. We will never see their like again.

“I,like, approached David Lean and was like,Hey David, like, why did you want me for this part?” - Most actors would answer Barry’s question LIKE that today.

No silly hand gesticulations that you see nowadays.
My mother always said: one speaks via the mouth, not the hands and I absolutely agree.

I'd thoroughly recommend his 'Smiley's People' TV miniseries in which he plays a veteran deadpan spymaster tasked with encouraging hardcore KGB chief 'Karla' (Patrick Stewart) to defect, a seemingly impossible task, so he uses all his skill and experience to try to dig up dirt on Karla to use as leverage..:)

Watching it now. I would recommend watching "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" before watching "Smiley's People", as the latter has spoilers regarding the former. Both are excellent, in any case.

Does anyone know where I can see the rest of this episode, where Norman reviews Bill Forsyth's film Housekeeping? You can hear him begin his review at the end of this video.

I love Star Wars, but it's clearly not an actor's movie.

Shame that they seemed forced in a corner of the studio; that set was... what were they thinking of?!

Tom Courtney, I think, was far better than Guinness as William Dorritt.

If a man of such intellect and insight to drama tells us in effect Star Wars was pure crap outside of the effects and the direction. Then why has this piece of popcorn been lauded as the greatest film ever made and you have otherwise intelligent film critic's falling over themselves to hail as the greatest movie ever made. It's actually the cause of all the sub standard effect laden rubbish that has been progressively pumped out of Hollywood over the last 40 years.
