Fwiw, he used far too many pebbles. He needs to redo the experiment w just an inch or 2 of pebbles but mixed w the soil, and with growing plants until they fill the container. 40 years of container growing tells me it does make a difference if you do it right. But no, you don’t have to, depending on what you are growing. If you are growing lavender, or other similar herbs, it’s a necessity in my area anyway and makes ALL the difference in a long lasting, beautiful, successful plant. I would never use a ratio of more stone to soil though like he did. A little goes a long way.

I would love to have you consider doing a story on a community garden I started in Meridian Idaho 14 years ago! The garden provides fresh produce for the local food banks, teaches new gardeners how to garden, has developed a pollinator garden and works within the city parks system. Joe Lampl, I am so excited to find you on CZcams! I watched you religiously on PBS. Then they dropped you. Argh! So 😠. But I finally checked You Tube. YAY!!! I found you! Thanks for this video! I live in Charleston, SC in a 1-BR apartment. Fortunately, I have one of the apartments that has a nice size Front & Back cement porches (ground floor)! I have mostly 5-gal. buckets for containers. I'm growing flowers & vegetables in them. I do not have an outside faucet, so I have to hand water (gallon jug). But that gives me time to check out the plants & see how they're doing. We're in Zone 8b, so we have mild winters (until Feb. & March). My Summer crops are still going strong, & I just planted my Late Summer ones out. I have seedlings under a grow light for my Fall garden (greens), and they're doing great. They'll be going outside in the next month or so. I've lived here 10 years, and I think this will be the most I've grown (at one time) this year!!
I’m in same situation in Ga. takes me an hour to hand water but my container plants are awesome!
Use pots for growing our herbs so that they are right outside our door as we have a large patio. When cooking we can take a few steps to get fresh herbs for cooking or snacking on while enjoying the day.
Container gardening is sometimes the only way to grow veggies 🌱👍
What a great video! Best take-away? Lining w/ bubble wrap! Phenomenal! My own new lesson this year? If container is going to sit on wood, ie a deck, drill the drainage holes on the sides about an inch up from the bottom. This will prevent mould/mildew/rot underneath as it drains thru the wood.

Yes, it was on PBS until this last couple of months when they drop some programs and replace them with other programs like the woman who makes curtains for her chicken's nest boxes, and small ceramic tea cups for their treats. Waste of time. I watched GGW religiously. So glad I thought to check CZcams.

If you will soak your terracotta pots in water until you hear the Fizzing stop it helps with the wicking alot

I grow in containers as well
A few months back saw a video where the lady cut out the bottom of large containers (sorry do not remember where) and had arborvitaes growing in them. The only thing was that they were not being moved but allowed for large/deep-rooted plants to be planted in them Basically a raised bed.

I am a new follower! . I am really enjoying and learning a lot. This one was Fantastic. I had a thought while watching which I would like to share if I may ? I was keen to know the outcome of comparing drainage with or without stones at the bottom of a container and was going to alter my practice based on the outcome. However I was a bit surprised that more stones were added than usual for no obvious reason and also random amounts of water poured. For authenticity and for more reliable outcomes , could have simulated normal planting conditions re: quantity of stones and amount of water added. I guess have to do it myself!
Love watching these shows ! In the beginning of the show it shows blueberries being potted. I was wondering if they grow like that year round , even in winter ? Zone 5a here. Montana

Do your organic veggie plants remain organic in the terra cotta and plastic pots.
Joe the part were you take the soil out of the container and put the bubblerap in.You just put the container in the gararge.you made double work.The container is way lighter.Still a great episode.
I want to use grow bags for containers, but they were not featured. Any thoughts on grow bags?
Grow bags are an easy and inexpensive option. You can buy expensive ones, but I use the reusable cloth bags from my grocery store. Just make sure to water more often because they do tend to dry out more quickly.
I personally believe grow bags are superior to all of these options. I assume they were not featured because this is more for the general home gardener looking for a certain aesthetic.
How do keep spiders from making homes under the pot rims, etc.

You put way too many stones in your example. You put no more than half/one inch. For my larger plants I use tiny pumice stones with the soil. I stopped using soil like miracle grow and others from large box stores. Go to a local nursery and buy your soil and mulch there. I have notice a HUGE difference in my garden and indoor plants. How about growing organically in plastic?
Not a smart idea to mount anything with constant moisture against a wooden house wall...it will compromise the siding and the wall, and in this case, the window above it too.
Thought the same thing haha I've learned not to put anything close to the house, it just doesn't end well
You do not want to lean anything organic like wood or soil against house wall....it will damage wall in many ways and require repairs.

Before you forget, please get a plank to put at the bottom because if you pick it up ... it'll all come out the bottom💀

Mr. Lamp'l, please don't advocate using plastics (including Styrofoam), be it pots, liners, etc. Using plastics in your garden is basically putting highly processed petrochemicals in your garden. Plastics are non-biodegradable and many find their way into the ocean or poor countries. (1) They will also stay in your garden for your and others' lifetimes. John Oliver recently did an expose on the danger of plastics as pollutants, in which he notes that less than 8% of plastics are recycled. (see Last Week Tonight March 21, 2021) Moreso, plastics increase the demand for oil. Plastics are manufactured mostly from oil, and they increase off-shore drilling; oil companies trying to ruin our national parks and deface the lands of native peoples; fracking; and other environmentally unsound practices. (2) We need to be more environmentally conscious, which entails consumers demanding and using more environmentally safe materials: terra cotta, coconut fiber, glass, wood, burlap, silicone, etc. Plastics also disrupt a lot of natural processes, for instance, plastic liners prevent nutrients from reaching soil when a mulch not only provides many of the same benefits, but also provides biomass nutrients that are good for plants. I'm still trying to wean myself off of, particularly, mult-use plastics (I have my fleet of seedling pots, used over again every year), but a true organic gardener will work to find other solutions than plastic.
