"Indurain makes me sick because he's actually a really nice guy. You can't actually work yourself up, there's no hate involved, no anger. He's a really nice bloke and a true champion." - Chris Boardman
I hated to see this, Indurain was my favorite cyclist of all time, power, grace and unlike some other riders, class and HUMILITY!
What isn't seen in this video is that for the previous hour many riders had attacked, and by the start of Les Arcs Telekom (Riis, Ulrich,Bolts, Holm) and Mapei (Rominger) and somewhat Once and Mapei, had repeatedly attacked Banesto, not just Indurain, as they didn't want to allow the Banesto "train" to do what they had the previous few Tours and guide Indurain safely partway up the final climb and let him essentially TT to the finish. Their attacks isolated him at the bottom of Les Arcs, then in consort dropped him with repeated attacks as soon as he faltered.
I don't think Induráin was guided safely by his partners in the tours he won. (only Perico Delgado was a good climber). At least no more than others like Rominger, Bugno, Chiapucci or Rijs. Induráin lost in 1996 because he no longer was that winner of 7 major races and couldn't do anything when younger and stronger riders launched the attacks.
@G P Fignon and Lemond hit the wall due to EPO. Lemond himself stated his watts were as good as ever.
End of an era. I really thought he would go on forever and it was a real shock to see him crack.
5 Tours, 2 Giros, 2 Paris-Nice, 2 Dauphiné Libéré,1 San Sebastian Classic, 1 Criterium International, Gold Medal in 1996 Olympic Games, Gold Medal in World championship, Hour Record.. and many Tours in Spain and Europe.
really awesome footage, great color casting by Roche and the other Irish guy.
Armstrong deserves all our respect because of his great courage but you can't deny it's a little bit suspected the way he won 7 consecutive Tours when, until 1999, he only had been a "good cyclist".
Great commentary i remember this
Indurain would later on the descent get off his bike and enter the hotel where his team were staying at. I believe this day is when he knew that the EPO rage was in full usage and he knew to get out as fast as possible.
Very, he was by far my favorite cyclist of the last 20 years. I look at him as sort of a hero, not because of his wins or fame but the way he won, his humility and class, he never spoke about fame or money he didn't need to humiliate his opponents to feel good about himself.
This proves that Indurain didn't dope, he had some bad days in his career. Armstrong, for example, never had a bad day for seven years.
the Miguel Indurain era, one of the best moments oh The Tour
WRONG! There was no hematocrit testing in the Tour back in 1996. Riis tested at 56.3% in an independent doctors test. LOOK IT UP PLEASE!
armstrong quit due to illness it was 2 months later when he was diagnosed with cancer
Indurain had more class than anyone of his generation and no rider now has that sort of charisma or talent to dominate at will. Riis was doped to the eyeballs on EPO, what a farce he was as a rider (along with Pantani, Ciapuchi, Virenque, Berzin, etc)
I had forgot Zuelle had crashed that day, but now it feels like it was almost inevitable he had.
% Tours in a row is a miracle. No shame being beaten on 1996. Just winning a single Tour in your career is a marvelous achievement. Winning 5 is just... amazing. It's natural. At some point all great cyclist see their careers end.
There's no point in comparing Armstrong to Indurain. 2 different cyclist at different point in time. Im spaniard but i have a greato respecto for armstrong.
"Indurain's lachaed!" Love Stephen Roche!
According to wiki this guy had one of the slowest heart rates ever recorded in a healthy person (@ 28bpm RR). 1 beat every 2 seconds lol.
I love Indurain not only for the brilliant career he had, but for being one of the very first to notice Lance Armstrong's potential when Lance returned to racing. He is the man Armstrong looked up to and always respected, and stole techniques from. Indurain also is always the perfect gentleman. You know, he should read the UCI.
This almost makes me want to cry, I love this guy. I remember watching this tour on TV It was possibly one of the worst summer ever. To find out that Riis admitted to EPO makes me sick.
Dude, Indurain was doped to the max too. Man went from barely finishing Tours to winning consecutively in the span of 1 year. You know who else did that? The most infamous doper.
@@blackmamba3060 yet again more speculation, no actual proof against big mig
@niceonetom: thanks! it bugged me wondering why there's a rule like that. that was a "nice one, tom!'
Wondering: what are the longest crank lengths used by any rider today in pro racing?
Poor indurain, beaten by a dane doped up to his eyeballs!
atleast bjarne had the guts to tell he took doping, unlike the rest of the peloton who were also using doping but just didn't tell
actually they found EPO in an armstrong doping test from 1999. but they only detected it a few years later when they were able to detect it with new methods and by then the test results were irrelevant because they were done too late!
All the riders were doped on EPO. All the top riders still dope. The tour hasn't had a clean winner for at least 20 years, and will probably never have one again.
the best ever!
painful to see a man so big fall from so high. its got to de devastating to have 5 tours in your belt and all of the sudden there you are strugling to even keep pace
and he won no other tour, pick another hero mate
excuse me, perdóname, but there is and always will be only one 'best cyclist in history' and that's the Belgian EDDY MERCKX, greatest cyclist ever, el único y verdadero más grande.
PS: For those who don't believe me, I challenge anyone to prove me wrong.
@VikingInvaders That's original. For the record he was never tested positive.
1992 Spanish National Champion, Paris-Nice 1989, 1990, Critérium Internacional 1990, Clásica de San Sebastian 1990, Giro de Italia 1992, 1993, World ITT Champ 1995, World Hour Record I could go on but there's not enough room.
QUESTION: how come Indurain couldn't take a water bottle during his climb?
what's the rule on that?....
The most accidental Partridge ever
wasnt able to more like
Bjarne riis, now there's a champion!
was a cold day, leblanc has arm warmers in july
The pain on big migs face at 2:02…
why the hell did they penalize for taking water from the team car?
Alguien sin drogas
Why ahould Indurain have it?? I seem to remember that he only came in 11.
It wasn't tested over 60%. All his tests was under 50% during the Tour de France. Otherwise he would have been disqualified.
@jackdanielss Miguel Indurain was big man champion in a little man's game. For hundred of years now most of the people on the podium are little mountain goats and that's fine. But Indurain championed above all this. For this, and for his humility, he is a great champion.
How do you prove something that is subjective. The way Indurain acted as champion was proof enough. If you're talking about Riis being doped, just look it up, his hematocrit was tested at over 60%!
Indurain would have won 10 consecutive TdFs, if he had doped.
I'm not knocking the guy, they all doped in that era. Riis doped when dethroned him. Every Tour from '91 was won on EPO until what '11? '12?. Just how it was.
fuel is over
Classic example of the knock basicly the body's out of fuel,no carbs,no sugar,no power and probably dehydrated can be fatal in some cases, the same as a marathon runner hitting the wall not a good day for the big man one to forget.
It doesnt matter what his opponents did or didnt do, im comparing Lance to the 5 times tour club, merkx, hinault, indurain, anquiteil, all multiple tour winners, in the same year
ok, gotcha, sorry for blowing like a volcano. i get you now, that is funny. haha
Why are world records are coming down?
the stephen roche commentary is special. don't get that in the US!
why will Indurain get penalised if he drinks ?
An example of bonking, probably due to lack of food and/or water. Wearing down of the body over time doesn't help either.
Yes, absolutely lolll
Everyine saying here Indurain doped, well then everyone else must have done even more dope because he had the biggest lungs and lowest resting heart rate of any tour champion in Hist
Indurain was doped to the max. He was outclimbing the best climber ever around 20kg heavier. Doesn't matter because everyone doped but don't be ignorant.
Anyway, he doesn't have to prove his innocence but others have to prove his guilt. So, for me, he is a fair winner and a great champion.
Armstrong only raced for tour de france after 98, never won any other tour...
Something went wrong with Indurain and his EPO - poor guy
No one's gonna tell you a thing about the Yankees because here in Europe we don't give a damn for baseball.Lance had bad days?Maybe some days he was not as much domineering as others but he always was completely recovered the next day.
Ohhh, so that was one day after the popular day, when Armstrong had to quit the Tour as a consequence of his disease.
It is said at 3:10!
Obviously you are fan of Indurain ;-)
It's a shame they didn't show the exact moment where Indurain blew. All they showed was a few moments after he'd been dropped. I've read somewhere that the Mapei's (Rominger and Olano) did as much work as possible in the last 4k's to put as much time as possible into Indurain. Shame the TV coverage wasn't better.
Indurain arguably best cyclist ever For sure. Arsmtrong would have never won 7 tours with indurain who won 5 in a row and also the spanish vuelta and il giro twice !
Big Mig was burnin oil
rjis admited he used EOP that year!!!!
@Belokki
Wrong!
Armstrong had to many red blood cells in 1999, which indicates the use of EPO. And it really doesn't matter whether they have be caught or not because we all know that most of the riders cheat - and for sure every winner of the tour
Proof? Didn't think so.
Indurain doped heavily, just like every other rider in his era of dominance. Indurain, however, wisely left the arena because he knew the undetectable EPO days would soon be over. Indurain even said he could easily have won a 6th for 97. 96 was an anomaly as he got ill.
I remember watching this live and being shocked…big mig greatest cyclist of all time…
Didn't eat enough, didn't drink enough. Too bad.
I believe Indurain had faired very badly in the rain before this stage. Amazing athlete but was often accused of being boring.
Big Mig was indeed great, but I think it is a bit unfair to say he had no team, as a matter of fact he had a great team... Not alot of flash, but hardworking, loyal and effective...
read the UCI...?
@SmartCasual86
Amstrong tambien ganó varias vueltas menores, clasicas y etapas.
It sure was Lance they talked about.
Before Lance started to use EPO he quit most of the tours :-)
No basso won giro last year before he was suspended and tour favorite (he was going for the double)ullrich was in giro too, and won several tours of switzerland, so again, lance is great but a one race rider....
And don´t forget he had to fight (apart from Rominger and Chiappucci) Jalabert, Zülle, Bugno...
Who´s Armstrong fought with?
72.5mm used by Armstrong and Leipheimer
The man was human after all... And, like who does not dope, had bad days. The ones that in 7 years never had a bad day, like Armstrong the cheater, are the abnormal ones, who we should suspect of...
wasnt armstrong lucky to get out when he did, he'd be banned now...
5 TOUR 2 GIROS SEMPRE INDURAIN
I love the commentary from Roche and Duffield. "Indurain lacheed." "Is he having a mechanical problem?" "No, no, no, no...legs!" And "What a day, Dave, what a day". Two real enthusiasts.
