  • I had a chance to try out another Mercedes 560 SL that was tuned by www.carobu.com/
With a handful of bolt on components, the car now puts out 279 horsepower and 313 lb/ft of torque. The suspension was also modified with larger swaybars, lowering springs and upgraded rear bushings. The wheels are from Maxilite and measure 16x8-inches.

I saw this car on a Breakfast Club Rally not long ago. Very nice car. I was in my gray market 500 SEC and had a hard time keeping up with this SL.

I am a former Benz trained mechanic and I have worked on many of these over the years. I used to do a few tricks on 500's all the time. My mentor Alex Z (R.I.P.) showed me quite a few Benz engineering tricks he learned during his time in Stuttgart. The manifold was always a weak spot as well as the K Jetronic. It was all about economy at the time but opening up the manifold and that fuel management that Carobu did makes sense. I am going to look them up and see what it is they offer. I have a deal for a 560 sec in the works and may want to tweak it a bit. I am on the north east coast so I may have to do it all myself but I may consult them and pick their brain if they let me.
    Great 560 BTW..

A tastefully done 107-chassis. Any Mercedes-Benz of that era seems "vault-like" because everything is rubber mounted. I clicked on the link but would love more detail on the fuel injection trickery done by Carobu.

How about the brakes? I can't remember the brakes on the R107, but I remember the brakes on the first series of the R129 (the successor to the R109) were quite weak, so I can immagine you would have to upgrade the brakes on a R107 with 280 hp. The 16 inch rims would allow a set of 320 mm front discs with dual calipers.

I’ve always like the euro 500SL, with the higher compression engines and euro bumpers. The US model looked awful in comparison. This conversion seems very well done. Unfortunately there is not much you can do about the steering and transmission, which are decidedly un-sporty.
