  • After seeing a video on 'How to make a large aluminum pinwheel'
    • HOW TO: giant pinwheel...
I wondered if a bigger, cheaper one could be made using one sheet of my favorite material; Fluted Plastic!
My thoughts if it worked would be to turn it into a fun portable wind generator that I could take to the ocean when camping out for a week.

What a cool project. I'm sure plenty of other people are going to say it too, but it'd be interesting to hook up a chain to the bicycle cassette and see if it could turn a small generator. I'm sure it wouldn't be useful for much, but it'd fun.

Awesome. I'm guessing there are a few times when the neighbors say "Hmmm. I wonder what Paul's up to now?". Thanks for sharing!

13:57 pause - You know you're living a surreal blessed life when you turn your camera toward the giant pinwheel that's bolted to your pickup truck and it's sitting beneath a full arching rainbow. 😆

I swear Paul the things you are into building an playing with is like looking in a mirror haha :) I bought a recumbent about 10 years ago, modified the heck out of it into a fully electric vehicle and Its still running happily to this day, and I have just bought a houseboat to turn into my completely self sufficient minamalist home, I have been agonising about how to manage a ship to shore without taking up much space and I have come up with a two part single person boat design i was going to make out of ply and fibre... You have just blown that concept out of the water! I found your stuff randomly and I am guessing you will have videos on all the materials you have worked with, so I daresay I have found my next binge watching campaign! Thank you for documenting and sharing your ideas, It was an unexpected and pleasant find.

What a great project for ham radio field day. We were going to be solar power next year, but I now think we may try to be solar and wind power. I am going to try to duplicate your project with a few modifications. Thank you for your tips.

Might be a good idea to put a whole bunch of them on a single shaft and at the end of the shaft you could put a year there and run it down to a generator at whatever ratio you want

I really love this idea concept of a coroplast pinwheel makes me think what if you use it as a wind turbine for off-grid purposes?
use it as a wind turbine for off-grid purposes to power up lights or something like that in case of a power outage is there's a lot of wind that could create some power.
I live in Southern Colorado where there's a lot of wind. Everybody in my neighborhood getting solar panels but I feel if they use a combination between solar panels and wind turbines when The Not So sunny days are around and still be able to generate some power.
I love this video as I love all your videos.
I look forward to seeing the next one

I would suggest some alluminium poles and a 4 point connector to join them to the cassette shaft to lighten the load. Also, you might be able to diminish that drooping pressure on the shaft connection to the 2" square if you use a threaded rod nut and a washer (probably would be easier to put the fins on too lol) that way you can control how big the air scoops are and potentially move the center of gravity closer to the support beam. Better balance

Even minor asymmetries will probably introduce enough force and flex to destroy that wheel hub in a short time. Fun experiment though.

I think if you left the wood slats off it would work better, the pin wheels you buy for toys use only the plastic without any supports.

Brilliant and inspiring Paul. Good engineering test, and I'm wondering if swapping the wood for aluminum, carbon fiber or aluminum tubes, and eventually the Coroplast for Aluminum sheet might up the durability and failure point to truly dangerous levels?.
