Can you hear better with your mouth open?

- I don’t remember if I used to sit around with my mouth open before I lost my sight, but maybe I started doing it after I went blind so I could get a tiny little edge in the hearing department. Sconce isn’t really on my side for this one but there are some reports that it might help just a tiny little bit if you keep your mouth open. If nothing else, it does change the WAY in which I hear.

I often notice my mouth's open when I am intensely listening to something or someone or focusing. I only notice my mouth is open when I start to drool.
Same
Eww
@@meraribonilla9561 what are you a girl? Can't handle saliva? You have it too.
i always drool on my guitar while playing lmao
@@0trippymy saxophone does that for me
if kids stare off into the distance, in lithuania, we say: "how many crows have you caught?"
If a person yawns, in latvia we say "shut your mouth before a crow flies in"
@renarsvallitis6209 are there alot of crows around? Are your crows friendly? In the US alot of people will leave coins and other small shiny items for them to have. The crows enjoy small, shiny things.
"I promise you won't look weird" says the blind guy
I tried it. It didn't help and I looked super weird lol! Maybe Pete's just messing with us, trying to make us all look ridiculous 🤣😂
well if it makes you feel any better I'm still doing it about 24 hours after shooting this video : )
@@BlindSurfer my mom has recently been declared legally blind. She can still see a little bit but has a huge blind spot in the middle of her field of vision. I was wondering, what are some of the apps you use that help you through your day? I'm always trying to find stuff to help her out.
I basically jsut use everything with Voice Over enabled. You can also grab Seeing AI
Ha! I just tried it, but I think I have too much water in my ears from this morning surf session with you😅💦🙉
As someone who is legally deaf yes yes you can hear better with your mouth open it changes you complete auditory structure.
Oh, weird! But super cool!
Same here!!!
So you can hear?...
@UnknownX-Edits You don't.. Have to hear nothing to be counted as legally deaf, you just need to lose 40 decibels for it to count. Just like being blind is below 20/200 or your field of vision is less then 20 degrees. You don't have to be seeing void to be counted as blind.
Wait, how can you hear better if your deaf tho?😅
Im an "ear rumbler" - if you are you probably know you are. I can consciously flex a muscle in my ear/jaw area to force my ears to pop. I can also flex it constantly to hear better - it has a weird sound, but it is definitely noticeable. It has to do with changing the shape of those same channels I believe!
hold on- not everyone can do both of those things??
I always catch myself with my mouth open when I'm focused. It helps me hear better!
Hmm, I know Laurie picked up radio stations when she got braces on The Partridge Family, but that's something I'll have to try for myself.
This is actually something i noticed while mowing the lawn with ear protection on. Every time i opened my mouth, i could hear the lawnmower 10x better!
Its a really cool effect
As someone who regularly turns down my car's radio in order to SEE better, your reasoning makes perfect sense.
Many "Mouth Breathers" suffer from allergies and things like a Deviated Septum... Add these to someone with Complex Sleep Apnea it can be terrifying ..... 😮😢😢
I haven’t tried opening my mouth but I always close my eyes when I really want to hear something.
I personally can't hear my breathing as much when i have my mouth open, and that allows me to hear my surroundings better.
😂 I was opening and closing my mouth the whole video... the first time 😅
Thats a really cool shirt
Can absolutely understand. I experienced that.
Opening the mouth paired with shallow breathing absolutely helps me hear better. It allows me to nix the sound of my own breathing, sharpening everything else. Whatever else may or may not be happening, idk
I always keep my mouth open when I'm stalking deer, but it's just because I can breathe with less noise than through my nose. Not something I usually hear either way, but makes a big difference when I'm listening that intently.
I always feel like "mouth breather" is an attack on allergy sufferers.
I tend to hear better when my mouth is closed but then again Iv have really good hearing Wich sucks when I try to go to sleep hear everything at night
I frequently use ear rumbling to block out certain sounds due to misophonia. Such as the sound of writing on cardboard with a marker or someone scrubbing carpet.
Oh my god!! XwX I LOVE the shirt!! Also yea I open my jaw to help clean inside my ears, and although I don't open my mouth I do keep my jaw loose and move my jaw which I guess is the same thing
"Close your mouth, please, Michael. We are not a codfish."
-Mary Poppins
😁
I love your shirt!
Have a good day
My husband always has his mouth open when he's really paying attention to something, too. I've informed him about it, and even though it doesn't look super intelligent , it is kinda cute in my opinion
My whole life I didn't know what knuckle dragger meant until I finally searched it up😅
No way :0! NEW VIDEO FROM A GREAT CZcamsR :D
I haven't seen this dude in months!!!! IM SO HAPPY RN
I'm here foru times a week every week. Feel free to stop on by whenever
@@BlindSurfer will do!
Gosh darn it, I love that shirt!
Hey pete! Much love!
I’ve got tmj right now and so I’m constantly having to tell people why my mouth is hanging open 😅 this made me laugh so hard
Nice video! Excited to see what’s next
I used to have earplugs when I swam and whenever I had my mouth open, I thought I heard better
I love that shirt! I love foxes >w
I’ve noticed my hearing is better when smiling for some reason.
I've heard about this phenomenon that by opening your mouth you can hear better or maybe clearer. Can't remember but this is not the first time I've heard it.
That’s epic. Keep up the good work man
It slightly changes to a higher volume but then it doesn't change back and i think that is cause your voice changes volume a lot but it still works!
Back when I was a conscript, we were taught to do the "monkey" when listening for anything in the dark; hands behind ears, open mouth and closed eyes.
My mom would scream that when I played twilight Princess,I just enjoyed the music so much though
The expressions were so funny lol
Damn where can I get that shirt? I love it!
Really cool to see someone else with aftershox headphones!
I wonder if your training in voice work helped give you an advantage in learning to use sound so much in navigation.
I actually think this might be an actual thing, opening the mouth does actually widen the opening of the ear canal (for example, when you yawn to pop your ears, what's actually happening is you're opening your ear canal enough to let pressure equalize) so while I don't hear a difference myself, for a blind individual, it might be enough of a difference to keep their mouth open subconsciously.
off topic
i love that wolf shirt
Honestly he doesn't look like he's blind
I say yes cause it sounds cool
My wife is now questioning my sanity lmao
All I hear is my jaw clicking in and out of socket 😂
😂😂 yep
Fun fact: you can put ear buds in your nose and play the audio through your mouth. Open and close your mouth to add flare to any song😂
Sounds the same whether or not my mouth is open
I used to have super sensitive hearing until I got a really bad cold when I was 19 that popped both my eardrums💀
I've been at a skydiving simulation and the instructor gave the advice to open your jaw to widen your ears.
So there's *some* truth to that, Pete.
I swear it's a "thing"
@BlindSurfer good news! It is a thing! Although it only boosts the threshold by a few decibels.
When I’m just sitting staring off into space thinking I do it with my mouth open I have eyesight I think it’s just a thing some people do cause it’s comfortable
Especially when you're submerged in the tub.
omfg i have the same headphones
Lmao, I was moving my mouth during this video for the first time.
i vote for knuckledragger -- it's more poetic than some scientific reason.
Knuckle dragger tho hahaha 😅
Open your mouth near your phone speaker, you'll notice it sounds different.
Not blind, but i am very sensitive to sensory input and have better hearing than the average person. I can confirm that i have learned to adjust my jaw when i hear faint noises to confirm that my brains not just making things up via misinterpretation of data.
i look like a moron lol. keep makeing videos man!
LOL!
Holy crap yes
Better cell reception lol
Love his videos also does anyone know where to find the shirt he is wearing
MY BLIND UNCLE ALSO HAS HIS MOUTH OPEN SOMETIMES AND IDK WHY BUT ITS A LITTLE FUNNY
I can hear my father's hearing aid when his mouth is open, so I guess sound can go opposite direction as well.
I did on the first time, I genuinely couldn't tell if there was a difference or not.... that said, I already have worse hearing than I should....
How does he always look directly in the camera
It's actually true you can hear better with your mouth open. It's mainly to do with sound tunnelling. For example, when you hum, try to listen to the TV while opening and closing your mouth while you hum the difference with the tv set will definitely be noticeable at a set levelofvolume. As always, your buddy Bryan Dublin Ireland 🇮🇪 here to put a medical spin on thing today.
For some reason I had a feeling that you'd have some insight into this. Thank you for helping to come up with an answer!
@BlindSurfer no problem Pete knowledge is power my friend 💪
Not when I'm wearing headphones
little of Calum A, Little of Calum B
I watched this video with those same bone conduction headphones.
I am the 5000 like!!! Let’s gooooo😝😜😜😝😝😝
Random but does anyone remember those toothbrushes for kids that used vibration to plays songs through teeth?
Where did you get that shitt i want it. :o
Eustachian tubes man, theyre wacky
For 2 seconds he sounded like seth rogan also nice work man ❤
The end masę me laught🤣
I like that shirt
... A weird thing I can do with my mouth is the second I smell perfume is the second I tasted... And that's why I don't wear perfume...
The jaw muscles close the ear canal by a bit.
I wwould like to havve him recreate an eas alarm
Pete already knows the truth, and the CZcams community will only confirm it 😂
Question when you dream are you still able to see like you used to or are you not able to see anything in your dreams either?
feel free to watch some of my videos on what I see when I dream.
Ever so slightly, yes
I don't know if it's me or my headphones, but I definitely hear better with my mouth closed. I know I have some fused bones in my spine that went unnoticed for almost 2 decades, so it wouldn't surprise me if I have other hidden fucked up shit
Am I the only one who can’t hear a damn thing when they yawn?
Same
I feel like when you open your mouth while listening, it helps you focus, could be wrong.
Lets trust in the Lord Jesus❤❤
If you were just catching flies… I can but you on to a full time job on the farm… I’ve heard you catch more flies with sugar than with vinegar 😉
Strong tornado hit just about 4 miles down road from us Wednesday evening. The sky was wicked and devastation heavy. Thankfully no major injuries. The post office, church and volunteer fire department were spared
Holy crap! That sounds super scary. Glad to hear you are all all right. Keep everything tied down out there
How do you edit your videos when tour blind?
I noticed something weird. You sounded more mute and more louder
If you’re crazy so am I because because I have a double ear infection and I sit there with my mouth open and hear better
This is also one reason why dogs will cock their heads.
But we turn the music down to look at house signs...
