    Edit: water valve may leak! Dump in a bucket of water to cause flush without refill!
    Original post: If you turn off the water intake valve behind the toilet before your initial flush you won’t have the water come up to the stain line. This will also prevent the need to plunge, which didn’t really lower the water level anyway. Just turn it back on when you’re done scrubbing.

    About forty years ago, while working as housekeeper in a nursing home, I was taught to always flush first, then use a Johnny mop to gently and quickly plunge and lower the water level in the toilet so I could effectively apply a measured amount of bowl cleaner, let that sit and work on any stains while I removed bathroom trash, replaced toilet paper/ towels, cleaned/disinfected the sink and mirror, then the outside/back/ sides of the toilet, then back to cleaning the actual toilet bowl, flush one more and boom, I was done except for sweeping and mopping the floor on my way out. Cleaned some very explosively soiled toilets and bathrooms in my day🙃. We used soft nylon long handled brushes on any stubborn residues. I used to clean about thirty rooms and toilets every single morning. I am still picky about keeping my own bathroom tidy😊

      By putting the Johnny mop in the dirty, soiled toilet ( to use as a plunger to lower the water level), if you then later used that same mop to mop the floors you were smearing poop around on the floors. This is very unsanitary. Mops that are going to be used to mop the floors shouldn’t be used in toilets whether they are soiled or not.

    Vinegar soaked tissues tucked up under the lip will also remove minerals and bacteria. Leave it for at least an hour or overnight and then you can flush. There are skinny long handled cleaning brushes that work very well under the lip. After flushing the vinegar tissue away you can brush and it's amazing how much mildew and rust flow away.

    Barkeeper's friend is a good product, I'll use a little bit of comet first to clean the germs, and then follow it up with the pumice stone. I get them at home Depot (use the one that's got a finer grit). Wear a pair of rubber gloves while cleaning. I do that about once a month and it keeps the toilet ring free. I think the pumice stone is better for the environment too.

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  Před rokem +6

      The pumice stone does work - that is true, and you need a very gentle touch when using one. For this reason, we don't allow our professional cleaners to use it, because they are usually barreling through a house at maximum efficiency speed. Too much pressure scrubbing a pumice stone (which is in fact a stone) against a porcelain coating can scratch the coating right off the inside bowl of the toilet leaving the ring area bare ceramic. The next time anyone uses a liquid bowl cleaner it permanently stains the toilet ring area (blueish).

    • @genxx2724

      I doubt any homeowner would agree to your using a pumice stone on their toilet. I had a housecleaner for a short time, and told her to use only my cleaning products, cloths, etc. She scratched my bathtub faucet and I couldn’t fathom how. Well, I found a small piece of steel wool she brought and stashed in my laundry closet. This is exactly what I was trying to avoid. I didn’t want anything abrasive used in my home.

Use this to remove worn metal from appliance legs, burnt on carbon in pans - carbon steel/enameled cast iron/stainless doesnt matter but dry carbon steel pans immediately after as they react & rust otherwise. • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  Před rokem +1

      Hi and yes, the toilet was really that dirty - which is why we flush the toilet first to see what flushes down and what stays and how bad it is. I've seen toilets much worse that had rust or iron below that water line. The key to ring prevention is to brush the toilet each day for 10 seconds. That will keep rings from forming. To clean the brush just rinse it in the clean toilet water and leave it drip drying between the seat and the rim usually does the trick.
      As for the sponge - you don't need one unless you're doing a deep clean, and you'll toss it when you are done with the deep clean, so an old sponge you're going to toss anyway works just fine.

  • @1Melody1963
    @1Melody1963 Před rokem +2

    Personally I have never had good success with Bar Keepers Friend removing stains. It is a good surfactant, meaning it removes soil, but not stains. No matter how hard I scrub, or how long I let it set. Or how many repeat applications. I have high mineral water, and the toilet rings are almost ever present. Pumice will take it off, as will a scotch brite pad (the green one-NOT the sponge.) But pumice also etches the finish so makes stain removal harder in the future. So what am I doing wrong?

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  Před rokem +3

      There are a few things that could be contributing to your difficulty in removing stains with Bar Keepers Friend. One possibility is that the type of stain you are trying to remove is not responsive to the cleaning agents in Bar Keepers Friend. Different cleaning products are formulated to address specific types of stains, and it's possible that the product you are using is not well-suited to the stains you are trying to remove.
      And like you said, a pumice stone can remove the rings but will etch the finish. So I'm wondering if that is what has happened in this case. If the porcelain or ceramic coating in a toilet has been removed with a pumice stone - any colored solution can leave a permanent stain around the ring line since the coating has been removed. Bar Keepers Friend, in this case, most likely won't remove the staining from the raw ceramic.
      Another possibility is that the surface you are cleaning is too heavily soiled or has built-up layers of grime that are preventing the product from effectively removing stains. In this case, you may need to use a stronger cleaning product like a liquid hydrochloric acid that can treat it differently than a powdered plus water paste.

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  Před rokem +5

      Try the Bar Keepers Friend if you haven't already. If it is from the well it might come out. Typically ring around the toilet or tub stains that are blue are from cleaners having used a pumice stone to erase the rings, and actually erased the enamel as well as the ring and then future cleaning chemicals or hard water stains will settle in those etchings and will never come clean again. But if nobody has used pumice stones - the Bar Keepers Friend may work.

    What do you recommend for hard brown limescale at the very bottom of the bowl in the neck area?

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  Před 6 měsíci

      Thank you for your question. A mixture of vinegar and baking soda can be effective. Let it sit for some time, then scrub with a toilet brush to help break down and remove the limescale. Another product that you might want to try is Lime-A-Way Bathroom Cleaner - amzn.to/3S71IzE (affiliate link*)

    You didn't use regular powdered cleanser like Ajax? Is that because of the porcelain coating?

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  Před rokem +1

      Great question. Ajax Powdered cleanser and Comet have pH balances in the 10 to 10.5 range. The Bar Keepers Friend powdered cleanser is a 1.5 - 2.5 on the pH scale putting it more in line with a toilet bowl cleaner that has the power to clean out heavy duty or (deep cleaning) gunk. All would work in a toilet (because of the porcelain coating) but the Ajax and Comet may not remove all the traces of the toilet bowl ring and may need to done a second or third time plus a lot of elbow grease.

      Dried latex paint can be removed by icing it down. When the paint is cold it can easily be scraped off with a butter knife.

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  Před rokem +2

      There is not much you can do. Painting a tub can cause it to peel after a while especially if the paint wasn't sealed properly or hasn't fully cured. When cleaning the tub, avoid using abrasive cleaners and use mild soap (like dawn dish soap and a gentle sponge.)

    What exactly was the "surface stain" in toilet bowl?
    I have water stains in my toilet bowl that I havent been able to remove. I tried comet, straight bleach and bathroom cleaners. Nothing.
    I read about using high potency vinegar and let it sit. But Bar keepers friend looks easier and prob smells a lot better.
    Will BKF work on any water stain? Idk if i have hard or soft water stains. I guess I should find out.

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  Před rokem +1

      It's hard to say exactly what the stain is - it looks like rust, but it didn't bleed below the water line so I don't think it is rust or the water would have left streaks coming from the top of the toilet bowl through the drain. Let me know how it works for you. I'm curious to hear your experience.
