Polar Bears Swimming in an Ice-free Arctic

  • Polar Bears are excellent swimmers, regularly swimming distances of 50km or more (30 miles), and occasionally much further as sea-ice coverage continues to decline in the arctic.
    Occasionally whilst I've been working in the arctic we spot them in open water, far from land, and on a couple of occasions one has swim closely past our vessel whilst at anchor, allowing this close-up photography.

    Beautifully shot once again.
    However tragic if this trend continues which seems assured now, we're witnessing the death of the largest extant land predator.
    I can only see polar bears surviving in captivity breading & their genes in the offspring with the interbreeding of Polar and Grizzly Bears (much like how we continue the genes of the Neanderthals & Denisovans).
