Dunlop Trailmax Raid Tyres - Almost 4000 miles later, what do I think?

  • The Dunlop Trailmax Raid sits slap bang in the middle of their Premium Adventure Tyre range and offers a true 50/50 performance. These high silica content tyres promise good tarmac performance in both dry and wet conditions as well as enhanced grip and stability off-road. I've covered almost 4000 miles on them since the summer of 2023, so how did I get on and how do the Raid tyres perform. Are they a perfect all-round adventure travel tyre?

Thx for the review and your impressions. I bought one for the fron of DL650 (110/80R19) also based on this review. So far approx 1000km and they are almost as good on tarmac as my previous TKC70 and much better offroad. However, I have to point one thing - they need like 100km to scrub the slick layer. It scared a sh*t out of me during the first few kilometers and I was almost rethinking my choices - I had a feeling of loosing the front in almost every corner. I haven't had this feeling w. new TKC70. But after like 100kms the "run-away" feeling disappeared and the rubber holds just fine.

    I appreciate the review.
I've seen one other long(ish) term review, at 8000 miles. He had a KTM 890 and the Raids were at the fail profile height point. Right down to the wear bars. His use was nearly all off paved roads.
I wanted something a bit more aggressive that the Mission's I was running. I have to ride quite a way on highway to get to the trails I want to ride. The Missions sux in deep sand/deep mud. You have to get going too fast before mud casts off. The Raids should clear better, with the bigger spaces, but I was glad to hear they were alright on pavement.

I pretty much agree with everything you said, my regular riding is the grey lanes of West Sussex and Hampshire, and my regular trips to Ireland, they are a fab tyre for this. Exactly what you were saying about narrow rural lanes, a 50/50 tyre is less of a twisty champ but its great on dirty dodgy surfaces. If you ride in rural areas a lot these would do well by the sounds of it.

These work as well as you would ever need, in all conditions that you would be using a 400 lb adventure bike for. They grip as well as you wou need on road, with a little noise, and made my KTM 790 adv safe off road, especially in slick conditions. Considering it’s not a dirt bike. They clog up in deeper muck, but still pull the bike along. Which is not the conditions I expect to be riding in much anyway.

  • @TheIdlesurfer

I've got these fitted on my Tiger Rally Pro which does a bit of easy off road, nothing in the real mud. Like you, I ride in the south east of England, and these tyres cannot cope with clay at my skill level. Better rides would get more out of them but a mud slick is a great talent leveller. I am just putting a set on my 701 for which I have 2 sets of wheels. I like using 50/50 tyres in the summer as they are a bit unpredictable and make summer green lane riding in the dry a bit more challenging. In the wet and mud my 701 is on Michelin Trackers but I'd choose these Dunlops for a big, dry trip or for a trip like the Nordic TET which is 95% gravel or tarmac. I wasted a set of Anakee Wilds on the Nordic TET. These would have been a lot more pleasant and long lasting.

Great 👍 review mate , I’m from Australia and are running the Trailmax Missions , BUT the rear is 11.5 mm depth and front only 8.5mm ( so they wear about the same time ) I ride enduro bikes and ADV , and have been for some years in Australian bush , desert and high Country. So I have developed a tyre choice for my Enduro/ Dual /sport , So D606 rear and Pirelli M21 rallycross front “ after years of using Motoz , Golden-tyres, and others ( the Dunlop last also as long and half the price( and traction in ALL conditions are very similar. And M21 is a freak of nature and does everything fantastic ( in my opinion ) and last at least twice as long . Anyway on my Big ADV I’m going to Try the Trailmax raid front . As it looks like will fulfil my requirements as lasting twice as long as rear Trailmax mission . How many km have you got out of front and how many do you think you will get ?

@mancavemoto to be fair, it's an good question about mpg! How about the weight of the tyres? Mitas e07 are a very heavy tyre compared to a 90/10 road tyre! I believe its as much as 10kgs from a light road tyre, to a heavy 50/50 tyre! More noticeable leaning into a corner! So much can change mpg, tyre choice, psi, extras....panniers..lights, crash bars etc! Style of riding! E5 over e10 fuel! Never use e10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!❤

It does appeal as a touring bike, however, the screen adjustment is a problem for me, sometimes you just want to lower the screen as you enter villages etc and then up the screen as you enter nationals etc, it doesn’t have to be electric, a clasp would do it, similar to the on the new Triumph 1200 Explorer for example. I am surprised at Honda to make a basic mistake on a touring bike!

If you’ve based that statement on the footage in this video then i hope you realise that I’ve not filmed every mile I’ve covered! I’m not an expert off roader, but I have ridden in enough muddy green lanes to know that these may struggle. Maybe a lighter bike would make them more effective, but for me they are maybe not aggressive enough for anything deeper than a few inches. Interestingly though they are now standard fit on the bikes at the Honda adventure centre

@@ck166666 agree with you. Classifying into gravel and mud is not indicative of extended off road riding.

@devinhelgeson These are a 50/50 tyre designed for big adventure bikes, they are not enduro tyres.
