Why Some Little People Are Getting Their Limbs Lengthened

- Inside Edition went into the operating room with some little people as they received a controversial limb lengthening procedure. Extended limb lengthening, or ELL, “is a complex procedure with far-reaching implications,” the nonprofit organization Little People of America, Inc., said in a statement on its website. “Interested individuals should carefully assess the institution and personnel, as well as all risks and benefits of ELL prior to committing to this procedure.” #InsideEdition

At the very least. I recently had ORIF surgery for my ankle. The first procedure alone to place the internal fixture was $27,000.

why can't we just make the world more accepting of little people? why do we have to make them go through painful, possibly dangerous procedres? it's sort of disgusting how people expect disabled people to give up so much of their lives to try and conform. nobody should have to torture themselves to be 'normal'
As much as the “being normal” thing is a factor, it’s very difficult to physically exist in a world built for standard size people. It would be impossible to completely re-create the world’s infrastructure, especially to accommodate a small minority
@@xyzabc4178 i'm disabled myself. i'm aware of how unsuited this world is for many people with disabilities. i'm not saying we should re-create any infrastructure, there should simply be more attention paid to accessibility. even small things like step-stools avalible for those who need them. not only that but teaching acceptance for our differences. disabled people don't want the world to be shaped around our every need. we know that's unrealistic, because everyone requires different things. we simply want tools to help us and peace of mind knowing we won't be targeted for our differences.
@@rampasplants8043 yeah I kind of agree with you. And if you feel comfortable with me asking, what disability do you have?
@@C2k785 i have autism and POTs (pots is a blood circulation disorder. basically how it affects me is that i often get dizzy and lightheaded when standing or sitting up and standing for long periods of time can make me dizzy as well. it also makes my heart go too fast, which makes physical activity difficult at times. it also causes me a bit of pain, which can make activities diffiuclt as well as sleeping)
This is the correct thing to think about. Instead of little people having to conform, we should have laws and coding made specifically for them. Just as we have for people on wheelchairs or other disabilities.
I remember growing up, I was offered to get this surgery done. I denied it because I feared my bones would later be affected in life.

Any leg lengthening surgery is dangerous. I was born with cerebral palsy and clubbed feet, and my right leg was always weaker/underdeveloped than the other one, and around nine years old, caused pain to bear weight on. After looking high and low for a solution, my parents found this doctor who suggested a leg lengthening operation. I agreed to it. But no matter how much therapy I did after it 'healed', I was never able to fully walk again, nor straighten my leg all the way. It was all left incomplete too, as my big toe was deformed from the operation for a long time. The next doctor suggested a big toe fusion operation, and now I cannot feel that toe to a large degree. Sucks all around, really.
Well you went to a bootleg surgeon then. They didn't know how to finish.
I was also born with a right club foot, i went through surgery to release a tendon and it ended up leaving a 5 inch scar on my ankle and minimal movement of my right foot. Im only 18, and it happened when i was very young. what do you do to deal with the pain of walking/running
I got cerebral palsy myself but it's manly a muscle disorder
Every surgery is dangerous. While it's important to remind that, we shouldn't scare people by making it seem like it _will_ fail.
@@SDayle But it's important to share stories about possible negative outcomes so someone can properly weigh the risk vs. reward. The risks will vary a lot person to person but it's good to consider. I’ve went through the surgery very painful. I recommend these kids to speak to people who have had it done. Also therapy to speak to someone before during and after. It’s really not the pain that’s hard to deal with it’s being laid up for so long. Everyone comes out of it differently but therapy for mental health should really be spoken about.
The stigma people who live with dwarfism go through that make them feel the need to go through this surgery to fit in is so sad to me. They shouldn’t have to undergo something like that to feel accepted or meet a “standard”

I think judging this as "unnecessary" should be up to the individual. I don't think you can make a blanket statement that something like this is never necessary, because each person living with something like this needs to make their own choice if the risks and pain is worth what can be gained.
For some people, what can be gained could be the difference between living a life dependent on others, or living independently.
As a person who lives with a disibility, I can't express what it means to be able to live independantly with my disability, or how it effects your life uf you need help every single day.
Well said!
This is what tripped me up when I saw the 8-year-old being brought in by her parents. If an adult, that has a concept of pain as well as what independent life is like at his/her height, wants this surgery, it should absolutely be available. But I couldn't shake the feeling that those parents wanted to "fix" their daughter for their own sake.
Things like these seriously motivate me to study more and become a better doctor.

This is something that would be totally life changing and, for some people, very much worth the risks. It's easy for you to say it's not worth the risks, because you're an average height. Docter:something in his hand

Made my legs hurt watching this
Heart breaking, my first reaction is don’t do it! But after thinking about it, being five foot tall at least makes it possible to do many jobs and career’s that would otherwise be impossible. If you can bear the pain of this procedure, go for it.

This looks so painful almost like torture
At the beginning of the vid I was wanting the surgery then realizing how they do and what could happen if you get it I changed my mind instantly
