    Whenever people doubt Denis' passion for the Dune project, I show them my favourite quote of his: "Since I was 12 years old, there was a book I read, which is 'Dune,' which is my favorite book...the producer of Alcon asked me what I would like to do next. I said, 'Dune,' spontaneously...For me it was just a dream, and I guess I'm lucky that Mary Parent from Legendary got the rights and offered it to me. I can't say no to that. I have images that I am haunted by for 35 years. I will not say no to that. That's going to be the project of my life."

    Whatever flaws the De Laurentiis / Lynch film has, it was a bold and ambitious attempt of casting this epic story in a less than 3 hour film. Much of the set design, artwork, costumes and practical effects (the navigator vs emperor scene ffs!) has long since become iconic. Many loathe the narrated thoughts, but I like the fuck out of them -- it totally fits the atmosphere ... "plans within plans". They tried their best, the soundtrack is exceptional and Laurentiis almost went bankrupt over the project. So this might be a reason why it feels rushed toward the end. Some Dune fan made a "novel cut" from all the material plus the deleted scenes. It's the best cut of them all.
    I hope Villeneuve stays true to that promise and takes the best things from Lynch's adaptation (costumes, set design ideas) and ports them to this new attempt of filming the story.
    It would be a blast.

    • @Drazakhan_Dynasty
      @Drazakhan_Dynasty Před 5 lety +2

      I always felt that Lynch's adaptation had great sets which really captured some of that Dune vibe, just terrible acting. Not that the actors were bad, but that Lynch's direction of their acting was totally out of place for the sets and costumes they were in. It's like watching a Twin Peaks/Stargate crossover.
      But you're right, it has become iconic and I hope this new movie doesn't completely overshadow it.
      I watched Lynch's Dune first before I ended up reading the books in my twenties, and so Paul Muad'Dib will always look like Kyle Maclachlan to me, and Stilgar will always look like Everett McGill. The guy who played Duncan Idaho, not too sure who that was, he died in the 90's, but for some reason Duncan Idaho just permanently looks like him to me (Jason Momoa as Duncan, yeeeaahhh I don't know about that).
      But Patrick Stewart as Gurney Halleck?? That doesn't work once you've read the books. However, Stewart still gives the performance 110%, as he always does. Just buries himself into his roles. Hopefully Josh Brolin can pull off a character who is supposed to be quite repulsive in appearance, yet fiercely loyal, charismatic and sensitive to truth and beauty once you get to know him.

      I love Lynch, and even his least favorite still holds a place in my heart. The true brilliance of his movie, for the time, was probably the addition of the internal voices. As much as people seem to hate them. The thing with the books is that they're insanely epic and take place over the course of millenia. The entire galaxy has an incredibly complex heirarchy and history, and the characters tend to do a lot of thinking. To make things even mor difficult to grok, many characters have mind-bending psychic abilities. With film being a visual medium and the books being intellectually heady, I'll be very interested to see what the comprehensible corporate-approved middle-ground is.

    I really love this channel for one reason: we seem to see eye to eye on SO MANY things regarding Dune. Agreed totally about the Lynch movie, it's not as bad as some people make it out to be, but at the same time it doesn't really come close to the grandeur of the book. And though the costume and world design was very well done, I always felt that it was Lynch's vision of Dune and not what Frank had in his head while writing it.
    I also heartily agree about Jodorowski's dune. I also watched that documentary some years ago on netflix, and I was baffled as to why everyone was so reverent about his movie. Sure it may have been his 2001, but in no way was what he had come up with anywhere NEAR the book! He changed so much that if he had made it, he should have re titled it and changed just a hair more to make it a totally new thing, as it had become.
    I was a little horrified that it almost got made TBH! And all the while everyone single interview in that doco completely glossing over the fact that he completely disrespected the story! I wouldn't be surprised if he read the book and all he got from it was "This will be my 2001" without actually reading the book!
    I also really enjoyed Blade Runner and Arrival, the latter a little less so, but only because I figured out the twist in the first 10 minutes or so. Other than that it was a very well put together movie! And Blade Runner was just... wow. I was sceptical of Denis before that, but as soon as I watched it, and then heard about Dune being in his hands that I thought we might finally get the movie for this book that it truly deserves! TWO of them! Which is ALSO what this book deserves!
    I hope they begin with some kind of prologue that isn't too talk heavy to explain how we got to the start of the book though, or at least never explain it fully and just let it be humanity in the far future and what we become. I honestly can't decide which would be better! Which is why Denis is the man on this one! XD

As someone who's been in fandoms for all sorts of adaptations, I can attest that ALL of them promise to be faithful to the books, to honor the books, to remain true to the books' spirit, blah blah blah. It's standard practice when it comes to an adaptation of a work that has a large and vocal fanbase already in place. It's meant to placate so that the existing fanbase will get on board - they know how troublesome a rebellious fandom can be. Everyone in ASOIAF fandom from before the TV series can recall when Benioff and Weiss used to post on Westeros.org, promising to honor the books we loved...and look how that turned out. Whether it's true or not when it comes to Villeneuve and Dune won't be known until the actual films are out. Taking everything with a grain of salt is the smartest move, while hoping for the best.

    Also, the people behind Dune 2020 seems like hard-core fans of the book series. I kind of worry that their movie will reflect tone of all the books rather than just the first one. Quinn I'm sooooo stoked for this film and I think you really nailed it with David Lynch's Dune, I thought the first part was largely faithful to the novel and well done, but then it's way too fast and patchy when Jessica and Paul enter the deserts. I also hear you about D&D squandering their chance to really say something to people or at least to really move them with storytelling. I really loved Arrival the writing, characters, cinematography, and theme came through so well. I'm so happy to hear that the director of that skill has Dune now.

    I loved the sci-fi channel miniseries Dune and Children of Dune they followed the books well and brought some of the best costumes and acting, even if its dated now, as one friend pointed out to me "that's painfully a back drop, but these people are acting their hearts out." I hope that this new Dune movie has the same spirit and passion, and its the only movie I'm interested in seeing at this point.

    Big fan of Dune - the book and '84 film. However, I've never understood the obsession with films adhering to the books they're based on. What is the point of making a film that is the literal copy of a book (and I'm not just referring to Dune). Dune, the '84 film was one of many great films that deviated from the books they were based on (others like Blade Runner, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Next, Forest Gump, The Shining, Fight Club, The Hobbit Trilogy just to name a few). Why replicate something in multiple formats when you have the opportunity to create a new vision from the same concept of story? We should be celebrating film makers who take the books we love and find new directions and variations of the ideas in the books.
    And even when movies do adhere to the books, there are still some who'll have issues with it, because as much as a book can describe a character, place or idea, much of what we read is left to our imagination, which means no movie will ever match each of our experience of the books, instead, it will be the film maker's experience of the book - so what's the point?
    I've asked many people who have complained about movies deviating from the book why they feel the movie must adhere to it and I've yet to get an rational or meaningful answer (mostly, the people I've discussed this with simply get upset or defensive?).

    Yoooooo Mr IdeasOfIceAndFire.... Have you heard anything about who might be playing Thufir Hawat? I've been thinking that they might have cut him out as they've started filming now and we haven't had any casting info on him. Also I've got a feeling that the Stephen mckinley henderson might be the emperor. He's either that or he is actually playing Thufir.

      @Hussein Abdulmalik I agree, it's a work of art compared to movies made today. Everything that comes out today always feels "safe", same style of directing, same cameras, same editing process, and even the same actors, the 84' Dune movie feels unique by comparison. It actually reminds me of movies like Star Wars, Labyrinth, or Alien where you can tell the staff working on it really loved the project and didn't do it just for the sake of a paycheck- by that I specifically mean those working on special effects, costumes, and set designs.

Star Wars adapted a lot from a lot of things, but it took a WHOLE lot from Dune.

I can't remember all of it now, because was a small details and the people around me doesn't read the book, so i had to ignore it, haha. But Brienne is definetly Nayla from God Emperor of Dune. Bran/Third-eyed Raven is the God Emperor, etc.

      @Eoraptor1 Před 5 lety +1

      @@selim6033 Greybeard Greycloak, IMO, the main thing Dune and Ice and Fire have in common isn't a particular plot point, but thematic, namely Frank Herbert's warning about charismatic leaders. I'm paraphrasing, but you can hear him say it himself here on CZcams. Charismatic leader/hero types should have a Surgeon's General warning like packs of cigarettes, "May be hazardous to your health." My favorite example of this will be familiar to Dune fans [SPOILERS FOLLOW]. The direct result of the "heroic" Atreides victory over the truly villainous Harkonens is the greatest killing spree in human history in the form of the Jihad. Even if Paul Atreides/Paul Mu'ad Dib had died it would have gone on in his name. Dany wipes out one city, driving nerd world half crazy. While Mu'ad Dib is the most powerful man ever to have lived, he cannot stop the Jihad. It has to run its course. He also cannot protect his wife or first-born child. Finally, he becomes a prisoner of his own vision. Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi reminded me very much of Paul Atreides in Dune Messiah and Children of Dune.

      @@Eoraptor1 Exactly! But in Ice and Fire Dany IS the reason and the agent at the same time. This turnes she (as a leader) in a complete crazy person. While Muad'Dib was a visionary working through the knowledge and the maturity of his actions. Working through the waves of history, knowing his powerlessness in some cases and his true power over other things. I don't think is the same thing at all. U can see the similarity of the one who makes whatever it takes to acomplishe what is the best for all (in his/her mind). But Muad'Dib has a LOT of mone knwoledge and wisdom, and a literally a superpower. It changes everything in the analysis.

    To be honest, I've been wondering about this particular topic ever since I heard of the new movie. I didn't know any of Denis Villeneuve's films, but Arrival had left me a little bit more confident after I watched it to get to know his style. He really deals well with complex ideas and knows how to bring them to a broad audience. I also heard about D.V. saying something about him liking the book, but never firsthand and I frankly believed it to be just empty words to catch the Dune fans' interest and support for the movie. Even now, I can't stop fearing the worst. Yet, this video has given me a lot of hope that there will FINALLY be a really good interpretation of the novel. Thanks, IOIAF!!

    If you want Frank Herbert's Dune read his books. Films can't slavishly follow novels, they have to be cinematic and work for that audience. Dune is my favourite novel and Lynch's Dune is in my top 10 all time movies (I am well aware of its flaws, believe me). They are different mediums and should be treated accordingly. If anyone can do it justice Villeneuve can but compromise will and should be made.

    More important than his commitment to faithfulness to the book is his ability to subtly adapt a book for film without undermining it, as seen with Arrival. Most of Dune is long stretches of intricate mental chess happening in the span of a few seconds, and turning that into a film can't just be a literal page-for-page conversion. He has both a love of the original book and the wisdom to change details without changing the story or themes, and I can't believe this is actually happening and I'm excited about it.
