  • Exploring Ancient Tahitian caves in the jungles of Puerto Rico... That's now only inhabited by thousands of bats. (HISTORY OF CAVES IN DESCRIPTION)
Thanks Andy for showing us this! and shoutout to the sickest crew!
Puerto Rico is rich in cave systems, many of which have historical and cultural importance dating back thousands of years. These caves were significant to the indigenous Taíno people who inhabited the island before the arrival of Europeans. The Taíno utilized caves for various purposes, including shelter, religious ceremonies, and art creation. Within these caves, archaeologists have discovered evidence of Taíno habitation, such as cave paintings, petroglyphs, and artifacts like pottery and tools.
The caves served as more than just shelters for the Taíno; they were also sacred spaces where rituals and ceremonies took place. These ceremonies often involved offerings to deities, such as the goddess of fertility, Atabey, and the god of the sea, Yúcahu. The Taíno believed that caves were portals to the spiritual realm, connecting the earth to the heavens.
With the arrival of European colonizers in the late 15th century, the indigenous population faced colonization, forced labor, and diseases brought by the newcomers. Many Taíno sought refuge in remote areas, including caves, to resist Spanish oppression. Despite their efforts, the Taíno population declined rapidly due to disease, warfare, and forced assimilation.
Over the centuries, Puerto Rico's caves have continued to hold cultural significance for various groups, including the African slaves brought to the island and their descendants. These caves served as hiding places and meeting spots for runaway slaves, known as cimarrones, who formed communities called cumbes in the mountains.
Today, Puerto Rico's caves are cherished as valuable archaeological sites and natural wonders, attracting tourists and researchers alike. They provide insights into the island's rich indigenous heritage and the resilience of its people throughout history.
Exploring these caves offers a unique opportunity to connect with Puerto Rico's past and appreciate the significance of these ancient spaces in shaping the island's cultural identity.
