This is horrible! Start a war to force a country to trade with you?? And then deliberately flood them with an addictive drug????? Why? What was the British hoping to accomplish by having a drug addicted population? Anyone know? Man, I hope mankind doesn't think like this anymore.

By the way, the officials of the Qing dynasty tried to destroy opiums, which was the fuse of opium war 1. Search '' Destruction of opium at Humen'' on wiki.

      I know:
To have a product who would compensate for the huge amout of tea they buy
To force China to open trade
To recover a part of silver invested in chinese goods previously

Because they bankrupted themselves by buying Chinese products. [They were very very willing to spend lots of money buying Chinese products.]

Finally a video that was well researched and did not add much bias to history.
I appreciate the hard work you do Khan Academy in all your videos and realized that truth is hard to find when people usually speak from a point of bias and from an uneducated and misinformed place. - Truth Seeker

wake up to reality , nothing ever truly exists in this accursed world, the longer you live the more you will realize that the only things that truly exist in this reality are merely pain, suffering and futility. The selfish intent to preserve peace initiates wars and hate is born in order to protect love. Listen, everywhere you look, wherever you find light there will always be shadows to be found. As long as the concept of victors exist the vanquished will always exist in this miserable reality. I intend to make a world of only love, of only peace, of only victors. and now, my final question, why arent u paying attention in history class?

It's a bit sad that you did not mention Taiwan even once :P
Taiwan was Japan's first colony after all. Japan annexed Taiwan in 1895, and annex Korea in 1910.
Well, technically Ryukyu was the first Japanese colony back in 1879, but Japan has maintained that Ryukyu was its tributary subject since 1609, after the Satsuma invasion.

yea...its true ...but look at it bit deeper, who owned the companies that did the trade, who are the share holders??....just because its "British East Indian" ...does not mean that it's British that's like saying French fries are French or the Mini is a British car...think its German the last time I looked. Global companies might trade in certain countries if the government allows it...the shame is the Brit government allowed it and when China said no ...then like a true bully they beat them into submission...sounds familiar??......where did they get all that gold from to trade with in the first place ..now that's story...what war was campaigned in the name of bringing Christianity to those poor forgotten souls …and oh by the way I’m going to take your gold.
Yesterday it was about Christianity tomorrow its about weapons of mass destruction….its always about something...but never about the truth.
The truth never set anyone free it just got them marched into the woods and killed.
