This is horrible! Start a war to force a country to trade with you?? And then deliberately flood them with an addictive drug????? Why? What was the British hoping to accomplish by having a drug addicted population? Anyone know? Man, I hope mankind doesn't think like this anymore.
Yes, this is history. The one who has a bigger fist earns more money and has more so-called morals.
By the way, the officials of the Qing dynasty tried to destroy opiums, which was the fuse of opium war 1. Search '' Destruction of opium at Humen'' on wiki.
for silver... and we are doing the same thing in different forms.
I know:
To have a product who would compensate for the huge amout of tea they buy
To force China to open trade
To recover a part of silver invested in chinese goods previously
Because they bankrupted themselves by buying Chinese products. [They were very very willing to spend lots of money buying Chinese products.]
Finally a video that was well researched and did not add much bias to history.
I appreciate the hard work you do Khan Academy in all your videos and realized that truth is hard to find when people usually speak from a point of bias and from an uneducated and misinformed place. - Truth Seeker
Khan seems know everything
When you become a Drug Cartel to get more tea
As Gladstone gets mentioned in this I just thought I'd mention that it would be great to have a series on Liberalism, perhaps contrasting the different routes taken in the UK, US and mainland Europe?
Excellent job. Thank you!!!
British appetite for tea is widely viewed as the main cause of the trade imbalance with China.
Wow, that's insane. And, there kingdom is still flourishing
Why... Does Sal Khan know everything?
The English learnt him all he knows. 🤔😎
Wow! Thanks!
3:31 sounds like one of these trailer voices xD
Apply this knowledge to today's events. China and US trade deficit. America needs China's cheap labor and products much more than China's need for American products. What will happen?
This time they will not give up so easily.
The Chinese Communist Party . . . idk.
Robots and automation
Thanks sal khan👍
Quite good video, awesome!
I enjoyed the video! Keep it up!
Great video! Keep it up
Lovely content! Keep it up!
@Amelie Carney yes
Nice
um idk why but im learning about drugs at school
The British are always the villains and the liberators in historical retellings it would be nice to hear or learn of how the Chinese countervailed instead of this reflexive approach
there should be a video of the rise of Qing dynasty and Manchu. there is no video of tibet buddhist
Open up a closed economy to trade, you say?
England......RUTHLESS. The USA was still a baby nation and facing and overcoming its own civil war....The Brits!!!
yeah, now america took on their mantle
Sad, but where theirs money to be made, people will do nefarious things to capitalise on it
i am currently in school
I’m so sorry that I almost thought it said “Ohio wars”
know this, a race considers another race is okay to be enslaved, is okay to be enslaved, it's just a matter of time
That's some circular logic you've got going there. If you believe that, then YOU deserve to be enslaved. And if I believe what I just said, then I deserve to be enslaved for typing this as well. Sure enough, EVERYONE ought to be enslaved.
do u have a point?
@@ricshawn3463 your statement is paradoxical.
@@TeamRCXD what im trying to say is don't bully others even if u are stronger. i believe that's what set us aside from animals
@@ricshawn3463 Hahaha as a color person looking into the west today (not living in any western countries), try to tell that to the race rhetoric that's going on and the media that keeps on using race wars as a leverage for themselves.
wake up to reality , nothing ever truly exists in this accursed world, the longer you live the more you will realize that the only things that truly exist in this reality are merely pain, suffering and futility. The selfish intent to preserve peace initiates wars and hate is born in order to protect love. Listen, everywhere you look, wherever you find light there will always be shadows to be found. As long as the concept of victors exist the vanquished will always exist in this miserable reality. I intend to make a world of only love, of only peace, of only victors. and now, my final question, why arent u paying attention in history class?
It's a bit sad that you did not mention Taiwan even once :P
Taiwan was Japan's first colony after all. Japan annexed Taiwan in 1895, and annex Korea in 1910.
Well, technically Ryukyu was the first Japanese colony back in 1879, but Japan has maintained that Ryukyu was its tributary subject since 1609, after the Satsuma invasion.
Don't be silly,. Taiwan had nothing in Opium was. That was the war between Qing dynasty vs Japan, and there is nothing about opium at all.
This is a story of the Opium wars. There are other resources for Taiwan.
How accurate is Khan's information?
I think it is pretty accurate because it is reliable. It is even recognized by the College Board SAT site.
yea...its true ...but look at it bit deeper, who owned the companies that did the trade, who are the share holders??....just because its "British East Indian" ...does not mean that it's British that's like saying French fries are French or the Mini is a British car...think its German the last time I looked. Global companies might trade in certain countries if the government allows it...the shame is the Brit government allowed it and when China said no ...then like a true bully they beat them into submission...sounds familiar??......where did they get all that gold from to trade with in the first place ..now that's story...what war was campaigned in the name of bringing Christianity to those poor forgotten souls …and oh by the way I’m going to take your gold.
Yesterday it was about Christianity tomorrow its about weapons of mass destruction….its always about something...but never about the truth.
The truth never set anyone free it just got them marched into the woods and killed.
this is why chinese hate drugs so much
.
hard to listen to these artifictional intonations
You don’t have a teacher voice.
