- Meet the extraordinary women who shaped Brazilian history from the 16th to the 20th century. This video introduces Catarina Paraguaçu, a visionary Tupinambá Indian from the early colonial period, and Dandara dos Palmares, an Afro-Brazilian warrior who fought bravely against slavery. We also highlight Maria Quitéria, known as Brazil's Joan of Arc from the 19th century, who broke gender barriers in the fight for independence. Experience the creative spirit of Chiquinha Gonzaga, a composer who defied societal expectations and influenced Brazil's music scene, blending classical with popular rhythms. Finally, we celebrate Tarsila do Amaral, a pivotal figure in Brazilian Modernist art, along with fellow artists Oswald de Andrade and Anita Malfatti. Join us to honor these inspiring women whose lives and legacies continue to resonate across centuries and beyond.

Julia, I managed to watch the video! I loved it, I didn't know the stories of the first 3 well, great stories. and Chiquinha Gonzaga and Tarsila do Amaral enchant me so much, truly warrior women! Thank you very much for this wonderful video!
That is so kind of you to say, thank you. So glad you enjoyed the video! ♥ :)
I would appreciate a video on the anthropophagic movement in Brazilian art!!!
That's so great to hear, thank you! :)
❤
Muito obrigada, que coisa boa ouvir isso! ♥ Agradeço muito o apoio :)
Very nice video Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Really appreciate this. As an Anglo, I feel like there's a fair bit of literature available to me about Spanish-speaking areas, but have not come across much popular history from the Portuguese speaking areas of the world. So this video is like a sneak peek into whole new vistas and I hope you will do more!
That's so nice to hear, thank you! I agree, there is so much history to explore, and it's usually less covered than Spanish-speaking countries. More on the way...! :)
This is great video about brazilian women who changed history, Their effort and dedication is marvellous.
Thank you so much for your kind comment!
Parabens pelo video e trabalho, Dra
Muito obrigada! :)
such an amazing and really so much motivational
Thank you so much!
Nice concept..... thanks
Glad you liked it
Very informative and interesting video
Glad you liked it
Very nice video thanku
Thank you!
amazing content, very informative video
Glad you think so!
Awesome video
Thank you!
Yes more Brazilian art and history . Part 2 and more would be great . Thank you !
That's great to know, thank you! :)
Wow amazing 🤩
Thank you! Cheers!
incredible ladies, thank you for sharing their stories!! would love to see a part two! having a full episode on some women like this you're especially interested in would be so cool as well! i'd also love to know about the history of (hopefully this is the right term) eunuchs - both how and where they appear through history, do we know how many people went into the procedure willingly vs how often it was forced or as a punishment. just think thatd be fascinating. thank you again!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. It's so nice to hear that you'd be interested in more videos about Brazilian women! There's so much to discuss... And I agree with you, the history of eunuchs is absolutely fascinating, and at the intersection of cultural and gender history, history of medicine and religion, so it would make for an interesting video, I think. Thanks for the suggestion. There's a lot to explore...! :)
Important video 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you so much!
Very informative.. good content
Glad you think so!
Amazing tutorial. Wow...
Glad you think so!
I loved to learned that

Wow amazing video
Thank you so much 😀
Very nice video
Thanks
Very informative and interesting video. Thank you so much for sharing this amazing video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This was so so so interesting! I had never heard of any of these women before which is a shame and I'd love for you to do more videos of the same kind.
I would like to highlight your point about such incredible (hi)stories like the Brazilian Mulan - or really any of them not getting an adaptation on screen. I mean, Hollywood (and all the other minor film industries) seem desperate to have new ideas, seeing as they insist on adapting the same old stories again and again (looking at you, Tudors) instead of adapting one of these!
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video, thank you so much for your kind comment! :) I'll definitely make a part 2. And yes - nothing against Anne Boleyn and her crowd, but there are so many other stories to tell! Who knows, maybe in the future...? ;)
Excellent video. Thank you so much sharing this video. I really appreciate the effort you. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks :)
Amazing. Thanks for all the info provided.

Thanks, Júlia, for such nice material about five remarkable brazilian women who should make any country(wo)men proud.
👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! ;)
Nice video..thanks for sharing
So nice of you
Catarina of Brasil' story is surprisingly similar to that of Pocahontas. Another very interesting video.
I agree, there are so many similarities! And both stories were mythologised very early on... Thanks for watching! :)
Excellent video! I thought I had a better than average grasp of the highlights of Brazilian history -- at least, a good grasp for a person of Anglo descent from the USA. And yet, I've never heard of any of the five women you highlight in your video. I've heard of Zumbi dos Palmares, and used to post a tribute to his memory on my Facebook page every year on the anniversary of his death (November 20), but never even knew until today that his authority in the Palmares quilombola was shared with anyone.
A part two video? YES, please! There are a few Brazilian women important to history I've heard of: Marcelina da Silva, Maria Bonita, Dilma Rousseff of course (though her career was so recent that it might be a bit too controversial to discuss it at length), and several others. I've often seen photos of protest demonstrations in Brazil during the military dictatorship led by women described as being leading actresses, but I have no idea who they actually were nor how involved they were in actually organizing the protests. All the online English-language discussions of protests during this era only mention Veloso, Gil, and Buarque, as if the dictatorship was toppled because of opposition from a few male pop singers. It would be very interesting to me, then, if you could shed some light on women activists' role that slice of Brazilian history,
Thank you for watching and for your thoughtful and kind comment. I'll definitely start working on a part 2 video! I agree that veering into contemporary political figures might be tricky, but there are so many others to explore. Women were central in the resistance against the dictatorship and, while I wouldn't diminish the importance of the male artists you mentioned (I've been in love with Caetano Veloso for roughly 20 years), these women deserve to be remembered, too. And how cool that you had heard of Maria Bonita! Thank you again :)
I've heard of them all. I'm Brazilian, I must know It.
I agree, it's important that we know our history. :)
When I was younger I was and avid reader of Goodnight stories for rebel girls and I'm very surprised that none of these women are in there (at least in the books I own). That's such a shame I would have loved Maria Quitéria as a child!
I couldn't agree more! Maybe there should be a new, expanded edition...?! Maria Quitéria would make a great movie, too.
From activism to the arts, their impact reverberates through generations, inspiring countless individuals.
So true! Thank you for watching :)
Very interesting video, great women.
Glad you enjoyed it
good video
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Já me inscrevi no canal ^^
Eba, muito obrigada! :)
Your English is very good, but there is a hint of brazilian accent that is unmistakeable. I immediately thought "she is probably from Santa Catarina or Rio Grande do Sul, maybe Paraná or São Paulo". Of course, based on probabilities.
That's ok, I'm proud of my accent. It tells my story, and I don't intend to hide the fact that I'm Brazilian.
Make a video about Aracy Guimarães Rosa
Very interesting suggestion, thank you :)
Dandara probably did not exist though.
Even Zumbi was a title and not a person, and that makes a single "zumbi dos palmares" character more mitological than historical.
Catarina Paraguaçu played a significant role in fostering peaceful relations between the Portuguese colonists and the Tupinambá people, most of the criticism comes from people that belive that natives belong in the jungles. As a native myself, i'm proud to be a mechanical engineer.
Also where is Xica da Silva? The black woman that scape slavery to become a large land owner... Is she too capitalist for the historians to consider her as a good black woman exemple?
I agree that it is unfortunate that there are so few written primary sources about Dandara. But according to the Fundação Palmares, her story survived to us mostly through oral history, which is also an integral part of how we write history. As for Zumbi (1678-1695), I'm talking specifically about the 4th ruler, and there is documentary evidence of him. I agree with you that Catarina Paraguaçu deserves to be remembered, but I understand why some would question her role. You are right in saying that Xica da Silva, like dozens of other significant women from our past, should be remembered as well, and I may make a future video including her. This was a very short video, and non-exhaustive list. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
Dilma Rousseff
Definitely an interesting character!
"... gender historian"
right click: Não Recomendar o Canal
same thing I do with Bolsonaro and Christian Theist channels.
No worries, I understand if the channel is not for you.
😃 Hi, Dr. Julia! Happy to watch your video! Those are super interesting women, whom now I know thanks to you! Which one of them does not deserve a movie? Catarina speaks to me about the importance and influence of her spiritual beliefs. Dandara is a hymn to resistance. Maria shows what being a woman in the army means. Chiquinha and Tarsila bring the pleasure of art. They invite to strenght, pride, freedom, leadership and follow the call of creating beauty, virtues that we need to live always and now more than ever! 💪 I enjoyed this fascinating journey very much and I will look for maestra Gonzaga's music!
Thank you for book recommendation! See you next time! 😃👋
🤩 Yes, please make a part 2 and a video on Antropophagic Movement in Brazilian Art! 🤩
Thank you so much for your kind comment, it's so wonderful to receive such encouraging feedback! ♥ I'll definitely start working on a part 2, and on a video about Brazilian art. Thank you for your support :)
