From 2017 to 2020, then kinda dropped it, and got back to it last year

What made you stop and what made you start again?
I myself started in 2016 but never improved so I gradually lost motivation but you DID get better
Also: I would have assumed the rise of AI drawings is even more of a motivation killer?
I had to stop for health reasons, and also didn't have time because of many things happening in my personal life.
Well, I used to suck at drawing when I started and drawing used to be very scary to me. But what helped me to improve was mostly observing the subjects, trying to understand their structures and what they're made of, alongside with watching tons of tutorials and artist streamings to understand the process, and sketching on a daily basis. I really recommend these.
Though, I get that it's a very hard and long path, because it's a lot of effort for, most of the time, little result. But little result is still result, and all little results put together make great result. Some days it was very hard to get to the drawing board because I was thinking "what the point?" It's a journey made of ups and downs. But as long as you keep believing in what you're doing, even if you feel it sucks sometimes, and you're putting the patience on a regular basis, you'll get there. And I can tell you that even nowadays, I'm still in the journey of learning. For literally every drawing I make, I need to study the subjects, sometimes watch some tutorials (for this specific artwork here, for example, I had to watch some tutorials about how to draw sea at sunset, because I still had no idea how to achieve that ^^). So, yeah, I hope these words can help you find motivation and help you in your artistic journey. What I can assure you is that in the end it's really worth it. It's a long and tedious way, but it's so worth it.
As for AI, it scares me a little, but most of the time I just don't think about it ^^
