I can remember back in the late 60's early 70's Pillsbury came out with "space food sticks". I had a paper route back then as a kid and the store next to where I picked up my papers sold them. They were a little pricey for me but I would buy a box every week. They looked like a six inch Tootsie roll. They were pretty good but had a strong vitamin overtone to them. Great memories.

I remember "Space Sticks". Weird tasting but oddly satifying. There is a "protein" bar that is still sold today that is just the same thing in a bar. I wish I could recall the name but once you see it and feel it through the wrapper you will know exactly what it is.

@@michaelwest9311 Metrx bars. When I was a kid, there were tubes of so called Space Food. LOL, it was grape jelly. This was mid 60s. I only saw them once that I can recall. Yeah, grape jelly in a plastic tube. What could go wrong?

Clive Cussler book (can't remember the title) mentioned Borscht Paste (as cosmonaut food). I had no idea what borscht was so I had to look it up. My new electric pressure cooker has a borscht button, makes me wonder because I think I am the only one in the country who's ever heard of the stuff.

These actually are used by cosmonauts, and these menu items (as well as the pizza one) are intended to be shared with American astronauts on the ISS. The packaging is different and the FRH is a totally different design for use in space, but these do actually go into space. The pizza one was disappointing, it just tasted like dough, but the pickle soup, borscht, and minced pork with vegetables are pretty darn tasty.

Russian Texas Beef Burger Paste. Sounds better than those NASTY brown bagged Omlette MREs I had to deal with when deployed

Many years ago, when I was a kid, I remember stuff being marketed as "astronaut food." Mostly, it was individually-wrapped sticks of meat or other food-like substances, and certainly nothing big enough to make even a kid-sized meal out of. Just a novelty. Since then, I've seen (but not tried) "freeze-dried ice cream" presented as coming from NASA's labs, but I'll stick to the real thing, thanks. =^[.]^=

It's my understanding that this style of food paste were used early in space race but were replaced because Astronauts despised them and it lead to them not consuming enough calories, a problem that's plagued armies since the dawn of time.

Very true. All the food science in the world won’t keep an army in the field if it’s too terrible to eat. Hence why the US army went to the trouble of bleaching flour of all its nutritional value, then re-fortifying it so the soldiers could have white bread.

I am , lol, down to Earth. I do admit, this review is different. I love different, I never said I was normal. You should be used to me by now. I love the knife. Have not seen one of those in years. The old Swedish design knives, are excellent. Wish I still had one, to add to the collection, sadly, all gone. Some food, did not stand the test of time? LOL. Glad you survived friend, Peace, John.

  • @loganbaileysfunwithtrains606

What I find really funny is that military MREs are almost exactly what NASA astronauts eat while in orbit, so when people want to try astronaut food, just give them a MRE. The only major difference is the menus and NASA has some freeze dried meals that need rehydrated. Interestingly enough the most complex astronaut food ever developed was by nasa for the Skylab missions (in the 1970s) where they had perishable and frozen foods onboard that needed to be cooked and refrigerated.

One of the big differences is no bread or crackers, crumbs in space are bad news, so they use flour tortillas for burgers, sandwiches, etc.

Actually, the Buran wasn't "technically" a failure,
it did go to space once (unmanned) and return.
The Soviet Union just lacked the funding to keep doing it, considering the state of that nation during that era.
Of course, they stole the plans for it from the Americans.

The Russians had to have had a good laugh when we grounded our Shuttles permanently, and had to buy rides on the Russian Soyuz capsules.

    • @loganbaileysfunwithtrains606
      @loganbaileysfunwithtrains606 Před rokem

They didn’t need to steal what wasn’t classified, most of the technical documents for the shuttle was open to public, and arguably the Buran was a better shuttle with air breathing jet engines unmanned flight capable with full ejector seat capabilities

Really appreciate your content mate (from Australia), especially the reproduced products you are showcasing.
Curious though, I have read anecdotes, to the meaning, that if rations are not enjoyable enough, you are not hungry/desperate enough.
Would your comments differ re-imagining that if you were in action, tired/parched/staving?
