This is a wonderful master class. I’m so impressed. He is fantastic.
CERTAINLY A MASTER. I DOUBT HIS ‘touching” is anything but constructive. The body plays a great part in singing.
The gentleman at 45:19 is Adler Fellow Efraín Solís. The baritone had a scene stealing role in Act I, Sc. 2 of the San Francisco Opera's 2014 production of "Un Ballo in Maschera" while in his fellowship with the company. Wonderful to see him as a student in this Master Class. I believe we will be seeing much more of him in the near future.

He actually did give an instrumentalist master class at Manhattan School of music in 2010. The video is up on their website.
When the results are heard it shows the critique was right.

No, he isn't pretentious - he is very American - and no: It is not the same thing!
He is very analytical.
It is a matter of style: On one hand having the anglo-saxon ironic distance that gets to the point immediately by the ulikely route on the other the brashness and no nonsens.
But Hampson is keen as stiletto in finding the weak spots and working on them.
The girl could go far: It needs a lot of work - a lot - but she could go far: The voice is there and the talent: It is mainly down to "engineering" and it is limited how far he can go in the time available. Perhaps she is not stubborn enough.
The boy is much more dedicated; but I fear the talent is not as big.
One thing: Hampson stands behind the soprano and thus have her under control in a duet. To be honest: I think he measures how much cleavage he can see - and take it from there. You occationally see Pavarotti doing the same thing - the sopranoes generally try to get away; but that is not the point: He is controlling her, Sometimes as in Rigoletto to launch Sutherland f.i. for the high note - that she might or might not dare.
