This is the first thing I managed to actually finish! Thank you so much for going slowly and showing everything so clearly. I love my little (not perfect but very cute) whale buddy!!

I love the crochet community! It's all love and support and helping eachother out! Everyone's so nice!
This was such a fun project! Never finished a crochet project before this. I definitely missed som increases and decreases but he’s still cute. I named my whale Sir Wallace Wilson Wingleton
Thank you! Back a year ago I started making these whales when I learned crocheting and I stopped making them bc I was busy with schoolwork but I’m gonna finally get back into crocheting with this video! 🐳
Yeah! ❤️🐳 that’s awesome!
I'm totally avoiding projects that I need to finish. Made one of these cuties just now. I'm in love. Thank you!!! I think my second one I'll tread the yarn over to make the second fin. So so cute.
I loooooooove these lil whales. I made a strawberry one and a lemon one with velvet yarn. Then I made one into a keychain and now my ideas are running wild. ♥️♥️♥️ Thanks for an amazing tutorial.
I saw someone on Tik Tok use this pattern but add their own strawberry leaves on top and little white lines with embroidery floss make the whale look like an actual strawberry! ❤️
you should try going to club crochet they have a lot of things to make
Your original version of this video is what I used to learn to crochet. Glad to see an updated video for these cute little guys! 💜
That’s awesome! ♥️
I really appreciate videos that have right hands, left hand versions! Its really useful for other people!!!!
I taught myself to crochet awhile ago but haven't done it in a few years. Have been wanting to pick it back up and finally learn the magic circle to start making amigurumi. I conquered the magic circle and then came here and this is my 1st official amigurumi project!! I had to make it up as I went along for the bottom half because I did it all one color but somehow still managed to end the same and it looks cute!! Thanks so much!! :)
YOU JUST MADE MY DREAMM COME TRUEE
MY GOAL IN 2021 IS TO MAKE A AMIRUGURUMI BECAUSE I ALWAYS FAIL A AMIRUGURUMI AND I MADE THIS
WHALLEEE🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳
Thank you for this tutorial! I cannot do a magic circle for the life of me so I’m glad I’m not the only one ❤
My whale came out so cute, thank you so much!
I have made 2 whales for my daughter, 1 blue and 1 yellow, and she takes them with her everywhere. I just started making amigurumi. Thank for this great easy pattern for beginners.
Thank you very much because I have been able to incorporate some of your crocheting styles and my little whale came out so well. Love the small improvements.
Probably the most helpful crochet video out there, i learned so many helpful tips for amigurumi. Thank you so much! It turned out so cute!
There's literally dozens of these tiny whiles on the web but this one rocks! Best fins I've ever seen (and here I was thinking I didn't want to sew fins on. Lol) Plus I've never seen anyone with your method of working increases and working regular sc in flo to minimize holes. Impressed, very impressed! 😍
This is one of the sweetest comments I’ve ever gotten. ❤️ thank you so much for your kind words! Another way I minimize holes, too, is a method called staggering vs stacking increases which I have a tutorial for as well on my channel!
Hope you have a great weekend! ❤️
I really love this tutorial
That’s amazing! Thank you so much for the comment! 😁
Thank you for the tutorial. I only learnt to crochet a few days ago and made this little guy with your easy to follow tutorial!! ❤️
You always explain the pattern so well 😩 I tried other whale patterns and yours was by far the best in my opinion. He came out so cute! 😍
So happy to find your channel. I want to crochet a little whale for my little one. Love the advice you give. Thanks 😁👍
AHHH THANK U I FINISHED HIM AND NOW IM GONNA GO WATCH UR CROCHET 101 VIDS AND MAKE ANOTHER!!
Mine came out great! Great tutorial with an even better result! I understuffed mine on purpose so it could be a stress toy. Now I wanna do a RAINBOW.
I started crocheting yesterday like I made my first chain and I really wanted to make a whale as one of my friends knows how make them and I love how they look so I started this and I'm on my bottom part now, I had to watch alot of tutorials in the middle as I only knew how to make a chain and a basic flower that I learned in the morning and ofc my crocheting is really lumpy but I'm still so happy I can do this
So I finished in an hour or so my fifth whale today, this time following this updated pattern! I finally got it all right and made my most perfect whale so far! The belly, which always ended looking pointy, is the flattest I've managed to do, and overall it looks so cute!! Thank you for these instructions :D
Practice makes perfect! I’m glad this video could help. 😁
I love how you keep improving these adorable lil' whales!!! Thank you
Crocheting is always improving yourself! 😂
I am a beginner and this is a really cute project to make i love it!
Thanks for this great tutorial. It will help with some of my other projects. I am a leftie and found that version very helpful. I did not change the yo but still liked the finished look!
I absolutely love how you explain🎉 thank you so much babe. Sending you aloha and light
Enjoyed this so much ❤
Thank you, love your videos!!
Wow this is the first thing I made that actually looks decent ! Thanks and i'm now going to go make a whale army :)
Whale armies are fun! 😁
I absolutely adore this pattern! Throughout the process I thought it was supper easy and simple. Especially the written instructions were written well💐 thank you for the pattern !!
Thanks for the tutorial and your way of making a magic circle is very interesting and easy (I'm a newbie that began crocheting a week ago)
It’s the only way I can do it, lol! I’ve started even doing granny squares with that method and chaining 3 instead of 2 and still doing back inside the first chain. Works really well!
What an adorable whale. Fantastic instructions. Thank you for sharing this. ❤
Thank you so much! I’m so excited! This was my first attempt at amigurumi and I think it turned out pretty darn good!!
These are so cute and super easy to follow along!
Thanks so much! 😊
Great tutorial. Came out so adorable 🥰
Yay! ❤️🥰
Love it thank you for sharing I’ve made loads of the other pattern x😊
You’re welcome 😊 Thank you for watching! ❤️
OMG! This tutorial was amazing! I’ve never crochet before and mine came out so cute.
thank you so much! I’m going to try this soon ❤️ they are too cute!
Thank you! Let me know how it turns out!
@@KnitGrit of course! I will tag you on Instagram! Also I have to say I LOVE that you include what yarn you buy. I’m new and it’s so overwhelming all the different types so thank you lol 🙏🏼
You taught me a lot of things in this video thank you so much
Awwww, that's so nice to hear! Thank you so much! ❤️
I was struggling with your original video last night! 😂 😢so I’m hoping my work will come out much better. Thank you so much!
I’m glad this one works better for you! ❤️
this is the first time i tried crochet and i did it!! yayy. thank you for explaining everything 🥰✨
You’re welcome 😊 I'm so glad this worked for you! ❤️
Ooff I just finished it , it took me two trys to make it as beginner I love the whale it is so cute
I kind of just winged the project because it was late and I didn’t want to mess with stitch markers and whatnot (they confuse me) but because of that, I ended up becoming much more comfortable with telling where stitches are and where they end/begin! My little whale buddy is certainly not perfect for many other reasons, but it felt a lot easier to do him than I thought. I’ve been self-teaching and so far I only know: slip-knot, chaining, single crochet, half-double, and double. I didn’t even know how to do a slip stitch, I just watched you intensely to figure it out! Overall super excited to try again and try it the way you do to make the x stitch now!
I love comments like these! ❤️ I’m so glad this tutorial helped!
I love it! Maybe a crochet dinosaur for a suggestion?
I actually have a little basic Dino on my channel but I’m thinking about doing a Baby Luna Dino! 🦖
I taught myself to crochet and always wrapped under too.
I taught myself. I'm dyslexic and honestly it just kinda happened, lol. I've found out that this way is called the X method, versus the wrap over, which is called the Y stitch. 😊
I prefer it that way anyway. Be yourself cause u r awsome!
@@KnitGrit Awww! All your video's are AWSOME!
I made some whales and they are soo cuteee 🐳💕
It turned out so cute 🥰
id say this video is made more for advanced people, if it was for beginners i'd be just telling everything i do stright and not intriduce other ways to crochet that just too much information for a beginner, just my honest opinion
I would agree. This video is more for beginning Amigurmi but already knows how to crochet.
Omg my whale looks super cute! Thank you so much
I’m glad I could help! Show us @knitgrit on Insta if you have the chance! I’d love to see it. 😁
would love to see a sting ray tutorial!
16:59 is the timestamp for the tail, for folks like me who need a refresher!
im really excited to make more
I'm definitely interested in a video on the pros and cons of your style vs traditional style. I plan to make a whale both ways to compare. Almost done with the first one.
My style is actually known as an "x" stitch where you wrap under, versus the "y" stitch which is when you wrap over. The X stitch tends to hide the stuffing a bit better, which is why many use it for amigurumi!
I love your stuff knit grit I SUBSCRIBE!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much! ❤️
hey ! awesome tutorial!! can i use a 4 ply cotton yarn for this ????
Thank you so much! I made 2 already. I was only wondering: what if I wanted to make one a bit bigger: how would I do that? Thank you!!! 😊
This is great! Any tips to prevent the tails from curling? Thanks in advance! So cute.
I just let mine curl, but you could use liquid starch or starch spray to help it!
thank you for the detailed tutorial! was able to finish my first amigurumi 💕
Yay! What color did you make yours? 😁
@@KnitGrit I did a blue and white combination and it looked cute 🥰
If we stop 1 stitch short of row 9 (stitch 29), does that mean we skip stitch 30 when we do the second tail in row 10 or does that mean we do the 5 chains and the first tail in stitch 30?
Cute !!
Hello, I just want to say thank you so much! Your whale amigurumi 2020 video got me into crocheting and now I'm making these cute whale amigurumi's for my friends and family. It was a great introduction video to crocheting.
I was also wondering how you would feel if I started to sell some of the whale amigurumis I made? I know it's your design so I would give credit to you but is that just something people who crochet don't do since it isn't my own design? I just wanted to ask because I definitely don't want to do something that is wrong and I don't know if this is rude or something. Also, whatever your opinion is, should I take it as a general rule of thumb or is this just something that is different for everyone? No matter what, I definitely had fun crocheting and look forward to doing more projects in the future. Thank you.
I'm making one now and I already love it! I just have one question, when you do Row "10" do you finish all 30 SC of Row 9 or do you only do 29, I'm just a little confused sorry.
You only do 29 but it’s fine either way, really. It’s all up to what you want to do. 😁
@@KnitGrit Thank you so much! I can back to make a second one, they are so cute, I'm using them as decorations for my bag
@@TianYuAdlinTan that’s awesome! 😁
@@KnitGrit If you only do 29 in Row 9, does that mean you skip stitch 30 and do the other tail in the first stitch of row 10?
Heyy, lovely video btw, I just wanted to know how I can taper the end of the whale toward the tail rather than make it a sphere?? Is that possible??
ARMY OF WHALES
!!!!!
The whales look nice but the tutorial has interruptions so I like straight forward tutorials do that I don’t get confused
I got a little bit lost 😞 so maybe can you go a little slower if you make another vid on these guys
You can slow the playback speed xx
Love how you make it so neat mine is soooo messy
Practice makes progress! ❤️
You’ll get there! 😊
ugh so cute! also did you design these and would it be alright if I sold them and gave you credit if you did design them?
I did this version of this pattern and I'm absolutely fine with you selling your products you make from my patterns! You paid for the yarn, why shouldn't you be able to sell it? 😁
Im confused, so in the tail portion the row 10 did u SC around first or just do the tail? Thankyou
I've never gotten the hexagonal effect. I don't think you're doing something wrong, but I think messing with the way you wrap the yarn and doing front loop only pulls on the stitches in a way that doing it the conventional way doesn't, which is why you get the hexagon!
I disagree. I wrap my yarn the traditional (yarn over) way and still get the hexagonal shape with stacked increases. She is not "messing" with the way she does her stitches. It's a difference between yarn over vs yarn under. Neither are wrong they just have a different look and yarn under tends to result in tighter stitches for me. I just can't get in the habit of using yarn under.
LOVE this conversation! Everyone is different. I'm going to do a video discussing Yarn Under (X) versus Yarn Over (Y) methods of single crocheting, as well as the pros and cons of both! Everyone crafts differently, maybe it has to do with tensioning as well whether or not the hexagon shows up! 😅
You're wrong, I dont crochet like she does and I always get a hexagon
@@ArachWitch check your tension
I always get haxagons, but it doesent matter. It looks the same either way
Ah! I love this! It seems so easy watching you do it!
I know my comment is super late, but I was trying to follow along and for whatever reason, I cant seem to figure out how your little hole closes when you pull the tail in the very beginning of the project? Everytime I try to pull my tail, the original slip stitch just gets really tight and then doesnt close.
Shoot me a pic or video of your doing it on Insta, that might help me see what you’re doing! ❤️
Hi, I hope you got help from Knit Grit but just incase someone else is having the same problem I wanted to leave something for them (I did this reply on someone else's comment but I'll do it here to).
I had this same problem when I was following the 2020 tutorial for the first time. I was stuck on just the first round for 3 hours 😅. I don't know if this is the exact same problem but here is what the problem was for me. I know it can be really hard to tell when you can't exactly see what I'm talking about so I'll try to be really descriptive.
What I found I was doing wrong was that when I inserted the hook into the slip knot you have to make sure the part of the loop that moves, the side of the loop that moves with the tail, has to be towards you. Not sure how to phrase is exactly but you can see at 5:26 (it's pretty fast so try slowing the video down) when she pulls the knot closed the part of the string that moves is faced towards you. If you put the hook in the loop where the part of the loop that moves faces away from you and you do the 2 chains and magic ring, you wont be able to pull the tail at all.
You can test if you are putting in the hook the right direction of the loop when you do the first 2 chains. If you are doing it right, when you try to go in the first chain you can pull the chain big and pull the tail to make it small. If you are doing it wrong, when you put your hook into the first chain and try to pull it big, you wont be able to pull it at all.
I really hope this helps someone 😄
I had to rewatch the video, and I haven't even made one yet, and I am just learning to crochet. But it looks like when she makes her slip knot at the beginning, she grabs the tail through the loop, usually I think most people grab the side attached to the yarn ball.
don't worry about it. I can buy it or come see u when i wanna do one lol.

:)
It did work. Thank you. I love watching your videos too. I've made a few Luna squish bunnies. My son loves them.
Thank s for this tutriol
Great tutorial, pretty easy to follow haha !! Btw, if I increase the rounds for maintaining the 30 stitches(Planning to go 5 or 6 rounds to make it even bigger instead of just 4 rounds), will the amount of decreases change as well?
As long as you are not adding increases, your decreases will remain the same. So if you were to just do 30 single crochet stitches a round, it will remain the same amount of decreases. :)
I have a consistent problem when trying to make the first circle where when I go to tighten the loop it won't let me.. am I stitching into the wrong part of the chain or making my slip knot incorrectly do you think? Sometimes it works fine, other times it doesn't and I can't figure out what I'm doing differently...
Otherwise love the tutorial, thankyou!
I would double check that you’re only making two chains and going into the second chain from your hook. Otherwise,
I might try to find another “magic ring” method that works better for you and then come back to this pattern! 😁 I hope that works for you!
Oof Hi, I had this same problem when I was following the 2020 tutorial for the first time. I was stuck on just the first round for 3 hours 😅. I don't know if this is the exact same problem but here is what the problem was for me (you might've solved this problem by now so this is for anyone else that might be having this problem).
I really hope this helps someone 😄
I was finally able to finish him but my bottome part where I decreased had a lot of holes. I am not sure why. 😢 He is cute none the less
when you do the 4 rounds of just 30, do you do only front loop? or do you do both loops?
I do FLO unless otherwise specified for that one BLO ridge 😊
I've made like 5 whales! This is my first shot at amigurumi, and once you get it down it's so much easier! I have a question though, I want to make bigger/jumbo whales, bit it seems like the head keeps getting triangular/cone shaped the bigger I increase. How can I avoid this?
One thing I will say is try staggering vs stacking your stitches and make sure your tensioning isn’t too tight. I have a video on staggering vs stacking, basically on the rows with an even number of stitches between increases, you split it up and center the increase between those stitches instead of just stacking them all on top of each other. Hope that makes sense!
I love your tutorial.❤️
I love this! But why do you not use stitch markers? Like ik you count in your head but wouldn't it just be easier to use a stitch marker?? Anyways that's fine however you do it tho!
I usually use my yarn tails as a stitch marker, and I definitely use markers the bigger I get lol most of the time it’s so much habit that I just know what it is by feel so adding a stitch marker just slows me down.
hi when im doing the magic circle increase its not straight like yours its all curled up, by any chance do u have an idea what im doing wrong?
Shoot me an email with a picture, and I can take a look!
@@KnitGrit ok whats ur email? 😊
I'm a bit confused, so there is no slip stitching?
I clicked on the link not knowing i needed to have ravelry so i signed up and did it again and it charges. Just incase any other boneheads like me have similar issues lol
Let me get you a second code so you can still get it! Gimme a minute :)
I really like your tutorials but… I did this lil whale and it’s a bit smaller than expected does this have to do with the type of yarn
What yarn did you use?
for the first six stitches, i don't understand how you are doing it. Do you go through the first chain every single time you do a stitch?
You could do the magic ring traditionally, which I've never wrapped my brain around, or you can chain two and in the first chain you place 6 single crochet inside that first chain. Hope that makes sense!
@@KnitGrit It does! Thank you so much, I did a bunch of them and they turned out awesome
I tried the first version, and I didn't like it and quit half way the whale looked like a cone head.lol.... But I think this one is better will try it again. tfs
How do you do increase
13:35
love it...im just a biginner and ur explanation method is amazing... this is my 3rd amigrumi and can u plssssssssssss make a mini crewmate of among us preeety plsssss
I actually have both a mini standing and mini sitting Crewmate! Check out the Among Us playlist! 😁
Where's the bigger whale pattern? I don't see it here.
Are you able to do this with thicker yarn as well?
Yes, I would just size up the crochet hook and anticipate a larger amigurumi/using more yarn and stuffing.
Okay! Thank you!!
Mine is oval I don’t get what I’m doing wrong.
May I use this pattern for my small business?
I have a video where I talk about this 😁 czcams.com/video/Ihx60dkM1Uk/video.html
Thank you so muchhhhhh!!!! I love this pattern
12:39 what dose she mean by increase she dose it so fast
An increase is when I place two stitches inside of a single stitch from the previous round.
I am sorry that I encountered difficulty after making 18, I do not understand the offset to make it rounder.
Every time you go around, you’re adding another stitch between your increases. If you don’t want to stagger your increases, you can just do the (SC2, INC) x6 and get yourself up to 24 stitches and then (SC3, INC) x6 to get to 30.
Mine curls in a lot and but if I flip it inside out it looks just like yours. . Any ideas where I went wrong?
If I crochet really tightly (my tension is too much) then it can flip in on itself, but I just kinda correct it by flipping it back. Maybe loosen up your tensioning? Hope that helps!
@@KnitGrit thanks so much! I'll give this a try!
i keep on messing up trying to add the eyes because they come out wonky
I'm glad you worked it out! 💜
Can i ask somthing what is the difrense with the video you made for whale update 2021 and this video can someone explain to me im counfused????
Replied on the previous comment. 😁
@@KnitGrit Huh
You made a similar question on another video and I replied to that.
@@KnitGrit yes i saw it thank u
22:08 in this stitch did you do a double crochet ?😅 because you said that it was a single crochet I continued as a double crochet just for that stich and single crochet all around I’ll come back to this comment after I’m done with the whale 🐳
