- Mad Max string theme
How I did the strings for the Mad Max Furiosa theme. I show you I start with a simple melody on the piano, then harmonize the melody by using my string banks going all the way to an orchestral arrangement. I speak about my thought process behind scenes. Why I make what decisions.

Ennio Morricone knew how to hit the emotional spots in "Cinema Paradiso" and "The Untouchables" and you definitely hit the emotional spot with Furiosa's theme in "Mad Max: Fury Road". It is very generous of you to create this tutorial series. I've never seen a film composer do a video series like this before. I can see your heart is really into educating, sharing and inspiring artists. I thank you and your team for making this all happen for us to experience.
Aviad Cohen Interesting that you mention Morricone, given that Fury Road has a clear spaghetti western influence. I always thought some of Morricone's best work was on spaghetti westerns, especially the Dollars Trilogy.
Aviad Cohen This very much reminds me of The Untouchables, which I haven't seen in years but I can still remember the music from Sean Connery's death scene.
Not many people in your position career wise would share such insight, well done and thank you. Subscribed!
Thank you!

Brings a tear to a glass eye.
Now I have to see Mad Max. Goddamnit Constantin Phillipou.
Perfect lesson and nice harmony part:

4:22 Am/G/F/C/Dm/B/Esus4/E
4:47 F/Dm/G/Ddim/Am
5:02 Em/F/Dm/G/G#dim7/Am/A7/Dm
5:24 Am/E.....
Alex Popp Thank you
I believe the second chord is Em with G bass... Pretty accurate, though. Thanks!
This is such an amazing treat to be able to see film composing of this caliber, THIS up close and detail. It's almost too good to be true.
This guys deserves the world of love to him. He really cares about it. Thank you.
at night before i go to sleep i play the end scene to fury road to hear that piece of music and see max disappear into the crowd. finally finding some peace.I collect film scores.classical music of our time. Thanks Tom.
he's a total master. it's not just the music which is emotional, riveting, and powerful. it's how it's edited so perfectly to every frame of the film. thanks for making these videos!!
Furiosa kneeling down & screaming in the vast desert is a beautiful cinematic moment ! The shot & the score gave me chills.. Thanks a lot for taking your valuable time & sharing your knowledge ! Respect !
oh that middle rise up moment gives me goosebumps and tears
Amazing and inspiring Artist / Soundtrack!
***** no doubt, man
@Voicians nice
I didn't know we were still writing like this. Such beautifully simple melodies with lush support underneath. Really strong string writing here JXL, thanks for sharing.
I just watched it for the second time. So inspiring. Thanks so much for sharing your work on composing process. This was a master class.
For such a hardcore character, Furiosa's theme is so sad and emotional.
+foist exactly...just her facial expressions without any words made us undestand what went through her mind. It was absolutely brilliant
This always has been and forever will be my dream job.
That said, I've seen Max twice in theaters already. Yours was the first film score in a long time to give me goosebumps, namely this song. I also enjoyed hearing some electronic music type bass with some lfo's modulating them during the canyon scene:) great work sir. I am subscribed and will have my note pad out with every new video you upload!
Thank you so much for this series.
That Furiosa's theme man... Damned onions in my keyboard.
The tempo and space here seems to have a profound effect on the realism and emotional quality of this piece of music
This is what talent looks like...probably easy for him...well done!
I am an aspiring composer myself and honestly I did not even know who was this JUNKIEXL until I saw the movie titled Run All Night where I loved the film music so much that I had to find out who composed it. Now, with Mad Max: Fury Road and this very nice and unique one of a kind tutorial I definitely know who is this JUNKIEXL.
Fury Road the movie is amazing a masterwork of George Miller coupled with an also amazing film music composition.
The Furiosa theme is my absolute favourite, peak emotional part of the movie. Indeed it is very very emotional. I could not hold my tears back. It does not only demonstrate Furiosa's painful realisation, but also the frustration of the entire movie that all the running and fighting, all was for nothing. That theme perfectly amplifies the bitter, painful and sorrowful end of all what left to be the last hope for humanity. I truly hope we will never going to have to live, but in fact slowly and painfully die in a post apocalyptic age that this film depicts! I hope that everybody will watch this movie and gets its important message!
whoa I got chills from hearing the real strings. The mock up sound decent, but wow the real orchestra breaths emotion so effortlessly
This is awesome! We the people demand more! Honestly though, this has got to be the best tutorial series on film scoring on the internet. It's got it all.
This is amazing, to be able to see the process behind such big hollywood film scores. I hope you continue to make these videos, because as someone who is learning it is invaluable to be able to watch the masters at work.
This world needs person like you. No one will explain such inside story. Amazing.
I haven't even seen Fury Road yet and this absolutely stunning adagio tells me everything I need to know about the scene it plays under!
I now know why i liked this movie so much, i was glued to the music and practically watched the whole movie with my eyes closed. This video is a Master Class in itself... the emotion in this music/film is so powerful one can feel themselves as Furiosa and her pain. thank you for sharing your gift with me. im inspired to create.
Every morning when I leave the house I start off listening to this track, Many Mothers. Fury Road is also the first soundtrack in twenty years I've been compelled to listen to every day which isn't Hans Zimmer.
