- E296: Do you ever wish you had a system that could use amiga peripherals, like a pistorm, a vampire, a TF card or more but was brand new. was not a repop board or a pi? well hang onto your girdle. I present TWO new devices you can get RIGHT NOW. the Minimig 1.1 and flagship 1.8 with real Motorola CPUs!!! I had this one pimped out with a cpu in the socket (optional?) and i added my own pistorm later
get yours now while supplies last. Dont miss out!!!

A special thank you to Ranko Rodic from minimig.ca for making this in purple for me, and trusting me with your baby. a pure work of art, love and passion! and I thank you with the most appreciation on earth. - Věda a technologie
Looking at the size of these things, it looks like it's begging for an Amiga laptop project (at least for the 1.1 version). The 1.8 with the PiStorm seems like the ultimate upgraded Amiga for those of us who made the mistake of letting our vintage hardware go back in the day.
Its not perfect perfect but its really good
Your videos are always very interesting to watch! Thanks!
Great review Chris, ordered one and will make a fitting kit for my cases and maybe the monitor. Thanks for this.
Man, I got to see these at World of Commodore in December, and was so incredibly impressed. I know that MiSTer is more flexible, but this purpose-built device that allows Amiga chips and peripherals is just a work of art.
This is more authentic than the MiSTer.
Its unique , new and will continue to get new support and features
Im glad this still uses a real 68k for the Cpu. Love that with the PiStorm its an fpga plugged into an fpga using protocols from almost 40 years ago and still works.
Great information Chris 👍🏻 Yet again I’ve learned something new.
So glad i found this video. I was just thinking of getting back into D-paint 4/5.
well for 50$ more you may want to check out the checkmate mini case i just did, minimig is out of stock but this one is.
Very simple, Perfect video. Thumb up
That is a sweet setup. Also, a top notch video.
Very nice stuff, thanks for the video !!!
Thanks for watching!
AWESOME!
Still feels good to see the Boing Ball after all this time.
Need to see that 1.8 married to a Vamp in action!
And it looks like the lid will go back on with the pistorm fitted. Looks amazing.
It does!
Great Video Chris. missed this one, went to order a MinMig v1.81 and they are out of stock. so hopefully they will get more in stock soon. or have an new unit coming out soon.
This thing is so cool, if I wasn't in debt up to my eyeballs trying to save 2 of my kitties a few weeks ago (unsuccessfully I might add), I would totally pick one up. I did pre-order the A500 Mini but it's not really designed for general use like this thing. I want to run Workbench & Dpaint like I use to spend hours upon hours doing back in the late 90's!
sorry about your kitties... im a cat lover myself.
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration Thanks, we still have 3 left. My wife and I have no kids so we're crazy cat people.
I love how you can buy or build stuff for your Amiga, that back in the 80’s was either Star Trek or would need a months pay to get it, and in many cases build it for change or the cost of a cheap meal out.
What a fast usable machine. ☀️
Looks like a nice piece of hardware.
Great video. My Minimig v1.2 has the PIC ARM replacement board and the piggy-backed extra RAM soldered to the existing chips (perfect for running WHDLoad of a large HDF image). The 1.8 seems to incorporate these as standard, but that CPU replacement board just blows me away. I still think it is a shame that nothing became of the FPGA Arcade as that allowed AGA on a slightly larger board (I have mine in a X500 case). The beauty of the early Minimig is that the board is so small you can put it inside a PC keyboard and make a very light and portable OCS/ECS machine.
Jesus on "E's" has to be my all time favourite Amiga Demo. It totally blew my mind back in the day when i first picked it up on floppy disc and loaded it in on my A1200. I still play it to this day, although through Amiga emulation on my pc or R/Pi. Great video though, Chris
How can I get a copy of Jesus on "E's" ???
Demozoo
Just been playing with my Mister DE10 and setting up MiniMig on that. Works as an 68000 or 68020 with OCS ECS or AGA up to 2MB chip and 384mb Fast Ram. Sysinfo shows 68020 at 99Mhz 13.68Mips and 13113 Dhrystones. Love the Purple Rev 1.8 MiniMig and fact it can use the PiStorm is amazing.
wow first time I have seen this.. and they are Canadian like me. Very cool
Saludos desde Argentina Realmente me trae muchos lindos recuerdos con mis 46 años, soy informatico, gracias por sacar un lagrimon de este viejo informatico... :_)
Please do another video on this more in depth how to install . I am brand new to Amiga getting a minimig 1.8 in mail soon.
whoa.. I never thought of using Pistorm in FPGA solution(minimig). nice
I didn't know they still made those :) Never had one, I had the MiST instead.
amazing !
I need one in my life. I need that 1.8 version
Thanks for the review Chris! Placed my order. Can't wait
OMG i Think im i love. Never owned a real amiga, this is bloody sweet
Its not perfect perfect but works quite well. And its new so theres always room for improvement. With a programmer like Renee. She can build a missile from a toothpick
Very very tempted even with our crappy dollar buying power 🇨🇦 very cool
Minimig 1.8 is amazing, im getting one
Dannit, this would have been a better solution than doing the ReAmiga for my A2000 and would have been cheaper also, and also give me a working machine. Currently havn't finished that ReAmiga due to the chip shortages. This was the main reason I ordered the A500 mini, and wanted something that looked like the Amiga even though it's alot smaller. Yes I could have used a raspbery pi, and I have but nothing beats a real Amiga, if thats not possible atleast something that looks like one. As usual great video Chris.
No zorro though. Core adapting all the time hope for a 32b aga version in future
My pistorm put my £300 ZZ9000 back in it's box.....800mips RTG and so much ram...... awesome
Wanna sell the zz9000?
State of the Art and 9 Fingers ... THE go to demos and emulation tests for me ...
Great video!
I have always loved Amiga hardware, and owned a few, although I only have my A500 tower project right now. I have used emulation and stuff so much over the last 20 something years though, starting with the very first Amiga Forever - the one that had OS3.0.
Anyway, my current setup includes Amiga Forever 2006, but I really love Icaros and Amilator as well. I have a couple old PCs and a laptop with the Intel GMA 950 chipset that run both of those perfectly.
If you can't afford these cool products get Amiga Forever Essentials on Android (or iOS?) for a couple bucks and you can try those.
Have you seen my amithlon videos? I build amiga os3.9xl stuff on old pc hardware all the time
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration hey, yeah I saw them. Amithlon always seemed pretty cool for the software that can run on it. I actually downloaded it after watching one of your videos but I haven't set it up yet.
It really looks good, only some polished metal stands/struts would heighten the look.
thanks for video, just got myself a couple of Mist 1.5 and quite bowled over how authenticate to my Amiga days using the crt this experience was. Regards to actual zero latency from controls I mean but also just the fact this is a native experience makes all the difference to me. I do already have two A1200's but never use them because I find them a hassle and they tend to look crap on Lcd but the Mist I found very appealing and it really is tremendous especially when using a pc crt monitor. Where can I get one of those keyboards where it needs you to smash the keys before they register?
One sexy minimig :D Thanks for the video :D
I'm going to sell off one of my 2000s and get this.
How much?
Im surprised they bother with the 3.3v to 5v level shifter to drive a 68000, and just don't either integrate the Arm A7 directly or just have a pi socket removing the need for a pistorm and having that build right in. But the 1.8 is super cool regardless!
I had mine kitted out eith a cpu in the slot.
Amiga Forever!
The big thing always missing from the "new" Amiga hardware is a ZORRO bus option and a Video Slot. Sure you can do a lot without it, but sometimes you just want to use a vintage card and just can't with these new products.
Very True!, however this at least is the first one i know of that gives you a real 68000 socket, i opted for the processor to be included. then put my pistorm in it, i will be adding the Vampire 500v2 to it so i have rtg/ram/networking etc...
I surely hope we can see a Buffee on there soon. Rena is working on it.
If i didn’t accidentally toss mine out. You would have!
1.8 is getting closer to something I'd be interested in. Hopefully one day they'll do a model that will be a drop in replacement for an original motherboard
Awesome stuff. Never heard of this before. Do we know if there are plans for AGA chipset or did I miss something and its not necessary or already in place?
Future cores are coming. Its a new take on a older project
Man, that would have been a lot cheaper than trying to piece together that 500 in a box I did for pistorm.
is it perfect, no, but its real real close, and with the additions of tossing a pistorm in it, wow, im going to continue more tests with this.
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration kinda got me thinking about selling off the 500+ I sort of gathered up.
Nooooooooo
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration it's the one I stuffed into a DVR case. Doesn't have a real case or keyboard. It was a 500 that I uplifted almost to the plus model. Just really the right agnus and the trapdoor memory for 2mb. I think denise is just a OCS though.
Minimig with A1200's internal expansion slot.
Ordered :) No info on shipping but hope it will be soon, Pistorm and tf536 will be tested :) this is so sweet. Do you think it is possible to get a A4000 keyboard working on the PS2 port? Need to look into that.
If you re pin it maybe? Never tried that one. Would rather replace the entire ps2 on the 4000 kb than risk carving a factory one up.
c super!
WOW
how i wish someone can do some thing like this for NeXT station.
That would be cool, but from what I've seen, nobody even backed up all the software for them somewhere. Nobody could afford them but government spy agencies, lol.
There must be a way of extending the Fast and Slow RAM so larger games can be loaded, don't know if a 1TiB SD Card would give you more memory for ADF's
storage does not grant ram, the base unit has 4mb, i opted for the processor to be included as well as the case. when i added the pistorm i got an additional 500mb 32b fastram. along with the units base 2mb chip 2mb fast. it was more than enough... next i plan to slap the vampire in there for rtg, networking, microsd access, and speed and ram!
couple buddies i know are working on a dual core chip for the amigas :)
who what where.... Exec is a single threaded kernel with pre emptive hand offs to custom chips to free cpu cycles... would love to see more info on that one and how even hyperion could not do that for 30 years...
Please make more vids on this minimig 1.8 :) Do you have the TF536?
I think i have a 530?
cool
Ordered one... (1.8). Gonna yank the PiStorm from my 1000 I think...
I just bought another one from sordan. Was only 45$
The site mentions Gerber and BOM, where are those located? Would be nice to look at.
yes they seem to be right on the page of it, you can build it yourself, i did price one out on pcbway and with parts and assembly it was like 550! usd no thanks!
This seems like they should make one without the level shifters and build in everything to plug in a Pi3, or PiZero2w upside down. Did anyone else notice the level shifters that get up to 5 volts only for the PiStorm to level shift them right back down. Also, I am guessing that FPGA they could fit whatever logic the CPLD from the PiStorm is doing. The other thing I don't understand is why the memory isn't in a single chip. Aren't lower density chips harder to source?
O clue. I just love it
Chris, I think there should bea special release of Pimiga (1.8?) curated for the minimig. maybe even distributed with it!? maybe I'm going to have to figure it out.
I have plans
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration I'd love to help if you need anything. Please let me know.
I already have a name. Mimiga 1.8
Was able to get a 1.9.1 with case. (Site stated last one in stock.) Has 2MB of chip, 1.5MB of slow with ~490,000 free. (Would it to have more slow RAM like 4MB.) 3.2 installed (not 3.2.1). OCS & ECS chip set. Power supply included. You will need VGA, PS2 keyboard and PS2 mouse. Works great if you want a A500,600,1000 like experience. SysInfo says 1.19 of a 68030 @25Mhz.
set its config to 1mb chip and 3mb fast, the total ram is 4mb so you need to split it up, for games 1mb chip is fine . or stick a pistorm or TF card in it for more fastram
So it's Some sorte of Amiga 500+++ Perfect Emulator
not a emulator... fpga recreation of custom chips like the vampire, except this gives you less base ram, but a real 68000 socket to toss a cpu into. i did the pistorm and a cpu that was ordered with it so it would boot out the box
What's that cool tv-like clock on your desk Chris?
Divoom tivoo. Divoom.com
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration Thx! :)
apart from the PIStorm not fuctioning, the minimig 1.8 works great.
Pistorm works fine
They are going for 350 Canadian now.
Shame they cant supply uk amiga retailer. $55 shipping is a bit on the high side
Thats how i feel when i have to buy just about everything from oversees myself
$101.73 CA to Australia :( ... all up its $506 AUD
Ouch thats 300 usd. Lol
I bought minimig back in the day and then went to mist and ultimately Mister. Imho Minimig still have a lot limitation and not worth $350 CAD unless your the person who wants to own everything.
Out of curiosity Chris, did you ever get the FPGA system that started it all? Jeri Ellsworth's (and Jens Schonfeld's) Commodore One?
No, I just stumbled on this one as i ebay at night. and purchased the 1.1, liked it so much found the seller and got the 1.8 . it just blew my mind with real 68K support i had to share it. the seller only had a few ready, and makes them daily. i didnt want to miss out on this one like i have missed out on so many others thinking, ill get it soon, and never find it again.
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration I'm glad you did. I've wanted a minimig for ages but thought they were out of production, and they never turn up on ebay.
Where you have bought that commodore light?
Its in a old video i made last year and its on the about me page of YT, but here www.retroledsigns.com/
The Minimig 1.8 would need a ethernet connection with the Pistorm .
just a thought .
Pistorm mushashi has wifi
Just build in the PiStorm and forget the socket for a real 68000 and the level shifting.
Nice or in the Strine - Noice!
What is happening with the Buffee?
Nothing at the moment. Pjit emulator issues still
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration thanks for that. I really hope they get it sorted as the potential is enormous. Do they have a Discord channel as I have searched but can't find one?
Buffee has a discord chan it is listed on their main website
Hey Chris, awesome vid as always! Very informative and funny as hell “cold shower, give her a tug” These Minimigs are very expensive now and they only take USD’s on the site.. Can you please do more setup vids, content, cores and games on the Minimig v1.1?
Yup $380 USD... Amiga RETRO tax in full effect as of Sept 2022. Everything is expensive now days. PISTORM? PiStorms are at least price controlled but RPi 3's are unobtanium unless you want to pay. A setup as shown in the video can hit about $600 or so by the time you're all done. Thankfully I got Rpi's before the price increases.
They should sell a keyboard/case for that thing!
Its all new. Maybe one day in time
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration not a critic to be clear, just a dream! ^
If the guy who is making the MINIMIG needs more FPGA chips then he should reach out to Lisa Su as AMD now owns XILINX
curious if it would work with a TF536! I got one of those that I would love to put in it. thought!?
I dont know. But you can ask them! I just tossed a pistorm in it and will prob do my tf530 and vampire eventually
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration Ya, Thanks! I've placed my order, and just anxious to see what this baby will do!
Hey Chris, I know this is a lot to ask but do you 3D print Minimig cases for other people? I just got a version 1.1 and I can’t find a reasonably priced case…
i can print one like my yellow one...
That would be amazing how do I get in touch with you?
My email address is on the about me page
Sorry Chris but I can’t seem to find any email address on your about page.. I see PayPal, twitter, patreon etc…
Click about tab on the right. Literally below the social buttons
Now there's a v1.91.
they need 10mb ram on them, 2 chip 8 fast at least.
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration 1.9x Seems to be sold out already. :-( I was able to purchase a Vampirev4+ stand alone that hopefully will arrive in 2023.
hey chris possible to try out the Minimig 1.8 with an Apollo accelerator, do you think it would work?
Im going to be testing a whole bunch of 68000 type adaptors real soon. It is still a early fpga code so theres always room for improvement. I did try several mister cores and they loaded up too!
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration awesome, look forward to what you find out!
$150 Canadian is about 108€
Hi Chris, great video! I got my hands on a MiniMig 1.8 and it works great. I've also installed PiStorms in my 2 500's (internally and externally) with success. However, I can't seem to get either a full PiStorm or, preferably, the EMU68, to come up on the MiniMig. The HDMI out on the Pi gives me the Emu68 screen, but the MiniMig is behaving as if there is no CPU. I'm using the MiniMig1-42MHz core and Kick32 ROM. No Floppys or HDs configured yet. Any tips or references you can point me to? Thanks!
To be more specific, I'm getting a flashing green screen on the Amiga output. So more of a Ram issue?
Do not define any kick start in the EMU68. It needs to load off the PIC chip of the minimig.
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration Thanks for the quick advice. I really appreciate it. I thought of kickstarts earlier since having 2 kickstarts defined seemed problematic. But when I remove the kickstart file and config line from the EMU68 I go from an output of a green screen to a blank screen! Is there any specific core requirement on the MiniMig I'm missing? The same SD card does come up with the MC68SEC000 installed. I also tried removing the boot delay on the EMU68, thinking there may be a timing issue.
EDIT: I noticed I was running an older release of EMU68. I downloaded the 2/23 version. Hasn't helped. . . I am running the PiStorm release as well.
I just selected the rom from the minimig boot loader and my hard drives are on the minimig. Not on pistorm emu68. And it just loaded
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration So you are running the straight rpi release of the EMU68? Not PiStorm or PiStorm lite. Am I reading that right? When you say you selected the rom from the MiniMig boot loader, you mean the onscreen menu? right?
I'm running a Pi 3A+, and I noticed you run a Pi Zero 2. Also noticing in the EMU68 folder I'm seeing a lot of different Pi models listed in the ".dtb" files, but not the 3A+. Maybe that's my problem? I just used my last pi zero 2!! When I run the rpi release of emu68, I don't even get the EMU68 screen like I do on the 2 pistorm releases. . . go figure!
Is it possible to attach SCSI HDs or other SCSI Devices to this minimig 1.8 version?
Only cpu socket options. Thats why a pistorm
Was the obvious choice
Do you think it's worth it to get this over a Mister or the newer Mister clone?
for me personally i would always choose the minimig, the Mister DOES offer other cores and works great, however its not fast if your looking for a super fpga amiga , the Minimig can even run the PiMiga images when configured for the minimig.
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration Gotcha that makes sense. I honestly am only interested in Amiga 500 / 1200, so it I get bored with the 500 later, I might try the Pistorm mod to it. Getting a 500 early next month, pretty stoked
For me this felt more like a sales pitch than a review.
Not at all. Just stating that these things are always in small runs and i have “missed out” on many of these things. Just sharing my thoughts thats all
Maybe that's because you want it? :)
Is it possible to get direct links to the files we need? I'm difficulties following what needs to be copied to the PiStorm card that goes in to the Raspberry Pi. Do you need to boot both cards? There are two files in the gifthub one has PiStorm and the other Raspi, do you need both files or do just use the PiStorm file?
minimig.ca maintains all the files for the card. the pistorm was an addition i just cloned (unzipped) the emu68 onto a fat32 card and stuck it in the pi and booted. using the minimig sd card for the rom selection and hdf files for the hard disks. if i were to carve out a type76 partition on the pistorm emu68 card as i shown in previous videos it would run even faster. but this was not done due to time constraints in shooting this video
Every rev is out of stock and prices are higher than before 😥
Yeah i sold him out for over a year
Any idea on when these will come back in stock?
i dont know, chip shortages and all, Email the site and ask.
In stock now price upped to $380 USD not CAD
Can I connect a Drawbridge or Greaseweazle?
maybe if the boot code would support it, but currently no
Where's the link?
It seems that it still don't have AGA support?
new cores can do more once developed. its a brand new take on something old. give it time.
PS2 mouse and keyboard, why not a DE-9 socket? On a modern machine USB would be expected, but nope let's do
USB- C and PS/2 combo lol :). I am guessing FPGA would be closer to the real thing than the WinUAE... Is this true?
Its new, adapting and growing. I actually think its micro usb. Im blind. It has both db9 and ps2
Not sure why they went for 4 mb only; wouldn't be better to add more memory at that point? Even to just run WHDLoad you need 3 MB on average I think. 8 MB would be sweet, but 4 is better than 2 :D
So what is the advantage of this board versus a Pi? Beside being FPGA, is there any advantage of spend more for this board compared to the good old Pi4?
i think that was the original limit, now that the rock star programmer Renee is on board the fpga code can be adapted, and upgraded. 8mb chip would be nice like winuae/pimiga does, it is nice to see something with a 68k socket... i dont know if any one is better than the other, its just nice to see and support new Amiga stuff. and i have an obsession so.....
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration Would love to see a socket-based 68K but sadly the only thing you can find around is the small SMD package type at best.
Running it with the pistorm is really impressive; it is expensive but it is in the price range of the Vampire, or even cheaper; and this one look much better than the Vampire, even if it does not have all those bells and whistle (which are a waste anyway on an Amiga; but to each their own)
Do you know if they have plans to make an expansion board for a real Amiga? or will it be a standalone as the previous versions?
With the price of MiSTer rising, and the basic instability and constant state of development of the V4 Stand Alone - this certainly has a strong appeal. Also, did you say it is running a genuine Motorola 68k cpu? You kind of rapid-fired the introduction and I didn't quite follow that. Of course, all the chip shortages that are affecting everything else will certainly have an impact on this.
I tell people all the time, though - unless you have a particular nostalgia for the REAL hardware - an FPGA solution is the way to go - and if your sweet spot is the Amiga - this isn't a bad way to go at $150CA.
I mean - lots of people are going to shell out about $130 for the Amiga 500 Mini - and this sounds like a far more authentic, cycle accurate, FPGA Amiga experience than the SoC running Colanto emulation on the Mini is going to deliver.
But, I'm buying one of those too - because the more of these projects we support, the more we're going to see people making products for our market.
The small one has a 68000 onboard. The larger one can run a 68000. I ordered mine with a cpu
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration They need to make that clearer on the website... Can the v1.8 unit run without the CPU? ie does the FPGA core give an option for an FPGA based 68000 like the mister core? And how do you order it with the CPU? I see no option to include a CPU in the order process...
There is a jumper on the board that says. Fpga/mcu so maybe. Best to contact them. I wrote them an email beforehand
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration No worries. Thanks Chris.
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration So if you have a native 68000 on the board, what role does the FPGA do, just handling the Agnus, Denise and other subystem specific chips? That in itself is a cool way to go about it. Does it run at a stock 7.44Mhz with a 68k?
How did you get the EMU68 running with the minimig? Best I get is a green screen.
Dont use any partitions from the emu68. Let the hd images reside and load from the minimig bootloader card
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration This is just the Emu68 partition. There may be some other x76 partitions but never used/formatted.
