I loved this set. It's a great build and looks amazing. I also disagree with some people's criticisms of the interior. I think it's pretty well detailed and there's not much more they could've done without it looking cluttered.
Agree. It is a really nice set and I am scratching my head where LEGO could have put those extra books everyone seems missing, keeping in mind that the interiors are pretty small to begin with.
The angled window piece is actually around 10 years old, I have it in a city bus station set from a while ago.

This set is fantastic, an absolute joy to build. I love the bay window, clock, recliner, basement, and prints, but most of all the overall shape of the buildings. I don’t really understand the criticisms of the interiors, they would be cluttered with more elements, and I like that there is room to add some details of your own.
The designer from the LEGO design vid is surprisingly young, I certainly hope he designs these sets for a long while.
The newspaper piece was also in the F.R.I.E.N.D.S central perk set

Modular buildings always use the most innovative building techniques. They’re always the most interesting and fun sets to build.
Fun fact: the designer of this set is an expert in color theory. The blue of the townhouse and the orange color of the bookshop become complimentary colors together (which creates the strongest contrast possible) that's why it pops so much.
That mom Minifig is a dead ringer for Merryl Streep!
This modular looks fantastic and certainly better than the Corner Garage which still hasn’t really grown on me...

I think the slanted window frame was also in a Velux promotional set 😉
The torso piece in red with the tie and suspenders looks like the one on the stilts guy from the funfair people pack.
I am looking forward to see a mock using 2 sets. Those buildings need to be bit larger, in my opinion.
Correction: The first modular with the ability to split in two was Market Street, then Pet Shop, then this one.

Yes the window pane is new. Slanted Windows’s have used other pieces to be slanted.
no it isn't, in fact it's the 10th anniversary of that piece exactly and the 36th anniversary of the concept of slanted window frames

I’ve grown to like this set a lot. I love the book store concept, the color scheme, and architectural style. Wish the book store facade had more texture because it seems kinda flat and too simple. I like that tree and the way they organized the scattered books. So bummed there are no play features like the brick bank laundry safe or the corner garage car lift and garage. Other than that, great modular!
13:20 thats the old piece used to build for example old red pizzeria that comes in a set with a lovely yellow bus thats old set like maybe 2010 or something like that but yoah that piece is used in black colour and it represents roof windows there:)
There was another similar but different piece from the mid-2000’s though

the next one should be an air port with the boarding thing to board an airplane and it should come with a airplane
I’m not a fan of the teal color for the townhouse though the dark blue looks good, I think sand blue would’ve been a better choice. I understand why since it was just used on the Assembly Square set but maybe something completely different even. Of course the medium dark flesh was also used in that set and the Corner Garage as well and the teal was the main color of the Diner. All in all the townhouse is San Francisco and the bookstore is Amsterdam, which ironically is where they researched for this set. Though I was hoping for more influence rather just essential copies of existing architecture.
I would buy the blue building by itself
I like this set, good review. I like the birch tree, but I would probably remove it just because it obscures the buildings too much and it's a little too attention grabbing.
You have to Buy ten of these and create a whole street of those blue houses
The outside is gorgeous, but the interiors are reallllly bland. Looks like the book store is going out of business.

That slanted window is not a new piece. It comes with the modular Car Shop that came out earlier this year.
I like both the Parisian Restaurant and this set. Which should I get? I really can't decide. I think this would fit better in my city however I fear the Parisian Restaurant will retire soon... Again, I like both of them equally.

My one gripe with the bookstore, and it seems to be common in the Lego community, is that there isn't enough books and bookshelves. And with the way it is built, it will take some real creative thinking, modifying and finagling to get more in there. One thing I am gonna do is put actual book accessories on every surface, and really anywhere I can. The bookstore MAY overtake that attic apartment, as well as annexing and knocking a hole into the neighboring house (which i have actually seen at privately owned bookstores based out of house-type buildings). Although i am iffy on annexing the house, just because in this particular modular build, they are made as separate buildings. Maybe I could just make another modular building to connect to the bookstore, using the same colored bricks.

Kinda weird how its Winter but the set is Fall themed.
If it was deeply discounted, it's a definite buy, but the lack of detail is disappointing. The last great Modular set, in my opinion, is the Assembly Square :(

Question for you guys....would it be more cost-effective to buy pieces on Bricklink (even if they're in different colors) and skip the interiors and minifigures and just use the instructions to build this? My son and I recently started a lego city but I just cant bring myself to pay $180 for a single set like this. That's more than the train set I bought him!

You guys are awesome, but I really think you should bring someone on board your team who is most passionate about LEGO CITY. To spread the love out a little more! City is really overshadowed by Star Wars, Marvel, etc... Just my opinion.

@@OregonBuildingRailfan It's still pretty sad if you don't have a toilet in your house, although there haven't been any apartments in the modular line with showers, and nobody's complaining about that. I'm still buying this, to display it next to my Detectives Office and it's toilet.
