a very unique game made with passion that I hope won't be overlooked because of its highly specific style. If you like these genres, give it a shot. The first hour is a bit dry but then it kicks ass.
I am not overlooking this one I am about to start this game soon its perfect for me. And I hope more people give it a shot.
I'd rather josh be working on a new Vegas 2 thank you. Seeing this makes me feel the same way about RARE working on sea of thieves. So much potential wasted on a niche game.
@@666slateran666 Ya but I rather have him do something he want to do for so long instead of what we want him to do and have no interest in it.
@@ashishgohil_ Fair enough, this is a self admitted passion project for him and I'm glad he's not being worked in the salt mines in outerworlds 2 or something
I think if you liked Disco Elysium, you'll like this game.
(I did, and I do, BTW...)
But they're not similar one to the other, at all.
Thanks for your videos!
As a teacher, I'd love to see more games like this. It can be the future of interactive books for kids or a great way to motivate kids to read.
Yes! i think Ubisoft had a great idea adding discovery mode to their games to learn about history and this takes things even further than that in so many ways.
Too bad all forms of media today are absolutely swamped with games, shows, music and movies that are shallow, busy, loud, shocking, etc. I feel like most kids would find it “boring” because they are nearly incapable of paying attention, taking time, or really thinking about things.
Consider the popularly of TikTok. Super short mindless copy and paste bullshit
@@Purriah Yeah, back in my day kids would read Dostoyevsky and watch french experimental films for fun!!!
What's great is that it makes the extra info accessible while letting you stick with the story of that's all you care about.
Late to the party but yes. I'm so happy this got made
It is WILD how niche it is, I LOVE that it lets you pause to read into what things mean. Constantly learning, and some people will hate that.
Felt the exact same. I love learning through my games. It helps with my immersion and interest.
Even games like Disco Elysium where it has a constructed history, I still get so much more out of it because that’s all there.
Soooo I didn’t realize this until I was like 90% through because I’m an oblivious moron who also blocks his tv view with a racing wheel… anyways.. yes. I am an idiot and I’m ashamed, but I’m kinda excited because now I can replay it to hopefully receive slow drips from the tender meat of History.
@@andromedamusic9751 Haha that's hilarious. Imagine the text is saying at the moment that Gollum was named Smeagol
I think the animation that plays when you wanna read up on something that someone is saying is quite slow too
I love reading about the pagan Gods and other stuff.
The art style is absolutely gorgeous - you don't really get the full impact from just from the stills of the game. Once you actually start playing, and get into the plot & characters, the art really does a lot to immerse yourself into the game world.
I’ve been playing it all day. My undergrad was a BA in History and I specifically focused on Medieval/Church history during my studies. So I am in heaven! It’s funny how much of this I take for granted because of my knowledge base… and then comparing that to others who have no idea. Anyway, playing through this and Somerville :) thanks for the salt my dude!
love to hear it!
also, downloading Somerville now. Pumped
@@JakeBaldino Sommerville is pretty cool from what I've played so far.
I literally disliked your comment because I was trying to like twice. Fixed it tho don't worry
@@CommanderCodyChipless haha no worries. I hope you like the game! It’s weird but I’m all for that. The only way the medium of gaming moves forward is by trying out new ideas and Pentiment is for sure unique :)
@@matthewjalovick I honestly am kinda salty most people won't play this game. But that has to do with my contempt with the modern gaming industry, obviously for another time. Cheers my dude, stay noble, Knight.
Pentiment is one of those games I’m so glad exists but might not ever play.
We’ll see.. One thing is for sure, Obsidian is one of the best studios in the biz.
Killing it for years
Even grounded that just got full release is good and not their style either
bro just play it lol gamepass
It’s a 5-10 hour game. Depending on how fast you read, or how much you consider your choices. Definitely worth playing.
Hey now you can play both Pentiment and Grounded
Mad respect. Virtually no one dedicates an entire video out of passion and knows they won't get a lot of clicks.
Oh no must not explore CZcams much
Obsidian set the bar for narratives and branching dialogue in CRPGs, I'm so glad the team responsible for this have been working old ideas into new games using their best skills!
As Monty Python would be quoted, "...and now for something completely different..."
I would do unspeakable horrors to get fallout new vegas 2
I started this game yesterday and have barely been able to put it down. Finished the first playthrough in 13 hours. I read pretty fast.
It's a good game. Many people are probably going to be put off by all the unfamiliar names and references. I encourage them to tough it out and find the human story behind it.
Pentiment is a portrait of a community enduring hardship and strife in the midst of tumultuous historical change. The people endure oppression, bad harvests, and callous lords but still find time to fall in love, have families, gossip and feast. I found myself captivated by them and their stories.
Well said!
Man 13 hours I spent about 20 for mine
You sold me! Sounds amazing
You should do reviews very concise.
I am pretty dang excited to play Pentiment! Not only is there a "pet the cat" option, but it also makes my lil art history heart happy❤Plus, who doesn't love a good murder mystery, with the added "joys" of 15th century shenanigans?
I'm probably your typical Call of Duty, Tony Hawk Pro Skater, and Forza type of gamer that doesn't have much time each gaming session to dig deep into a gaming story.
BUT
I'm between jobs right now and feeling incredibly burnt out on the CoD Warzone craze. So I have large chunks of time to play through games! I laughed at the description of this game viewing it through Xbox Game Pass so I gave it a shot. It's SO addicting. I can't believe I'm this invested in a text based game! I hate reading in general but this is actually fun. This could be a gateway type of thing for me to enjoy reading for the first time. Who knows. I love this game and am moving super slow but it feels fine doing so and the world of Pentiment isn't lacking in character and setting development. 10/10 fantastic game! I would have definitely been the type of gamer that this would not appeal to at first glance. But here I am... Nerdin out.
My girlfriend is big on art history and she’s really digging it so far. This is her first Obsidian game too, glad to hear it’s getting received well.
I’m here for my grain of salt 🧂
Here you are, good sir 🧂
I’m here for my pizza.
What does that mean exactly ? 🤔
This game is soo good, yet so serious. You learn a lot about that time period and what life was back then. I love the dictionary where it explain every word, characters and locations, so you always understand the context. Also the writing is animated in a fantastic way.
Pentiment is an amazing game, at first I was a little frustrated and thinking perhaps it was not for me. But at the end, I finished it with 24h and 40 minutes gameplay, so yeah, I put a LOT of time and really enjoyed it! When the game ended I literally had tears in my eyes, because of the amazing experience I just had and how I would miss it!
Its a niche game, but not as much as people think. As you have said, there are many reasons to love Pentiment. Perhaps gamers need to have a more open mind.. we are living in a age where developers take the "low risk" path, game development is hard, so many games are suffering from a creativity bankruptcy. Games like Pentiment and Vampire Survivors are not your "standard" game, but that doesnt mean they are niche, just different, and being different in a creativity bankruptcy industry can be a good thing!
This medieval art style always used to scared me as a kid for some reason. Never thought i would see it in a game, it looks cool and unique tho.
Probably wouldn’t have come across this game without your recommendation, many thanks brother Jake!!
cheers! thanks for stopping by, Owen!
If you're on Gamepass, it's been on the home page since launch. They're promoting it really well. Pretty much impossible to avoid.
Follow ACG on YT then. That guy is the best reviewer on YT and has shown me some games I didn't know they existed (like this one). He also has a weekly upload related to indie games so that you don't miss out.
This game was amazing. Been struggling to find something I could get into. Start up a game, play for 15 minutes, get bored, start another game, repeat.
Once I started this, I couldn't stop. It was so good. Best game I've played in a very long time.
I'll be playing this. My mom was a linguistics and art teacher focusing on 14th thru 17th centuries and a lot if it leaked into my head, it's like getting your perfect category of Trivial Pursuit. I'd love it if the format and idea caught on.
I can tell this won't be for me, but it seems awesome, so I recommended it to my friend who loves history and RPGs, and he friggin devoured it.
If you're not into this type of game, at least someone who is, we all benefit from this kind of thing existing!
This game burrowed into my skull like nothing has in a long time. I absolutely loved it, and I'm not going to get over certain things that happened in it for a long time.
As someone who loves history, point n clicks/narrative adventures, and morally ambiguous storytelling, I ADORE this game. I’ve also had my eyes on it since the announcement.
These are the type of games that give me faith in the industry. I’ve played very few games that so deeply immerse you into history and remind you that there’s no one correct perspective on history and how it’s a living breathing narrative.
Im so glad you enjoyed it and took time out to gush about it even if it’s a “low engagement” topic. Your love for video games and what they offer as a medium is so infectious. I’ll also be checking out Scorn thanks to your video on it! Cheers
For the algorithm!
This is literally the only channel I take seriously when it comes to video game news and reviews.
You work your ass off and it shows. Thanks for all you do!
I was seeing a lot of Rotten Tomatoes critics headlines for this game, then you look at the spoilers and see why
So true.
As a big history buff and a professor, I'm enjoying the hell out of this little awesome game.
Missed these types of games. Never actually realized I played these types of games so much growing up until I looked back on the older PC RPGs. Lots of meaningful choices, interesting characters given life only by text and your imagination, and love poured into it.
It’s what I miss about some video games in general.
Looking forward to playing this game. Haven't played anything of this type since Versailles 1685 in the early 2000s.
I just found your channel because I got this game and wanted to see what other people had to say about it. I LOVE this game; the art style, the storytelling, everything just feels like such a breath of fresh air. It's a completely different style of game, but Pentiment scratches the same itch for me that Kingdom Come: Deliverance did, but in a new way.
What I really like about this game is how your background isn't a 'win button' in dialogues. Like in other RPG's if you picked Intelligence you'd automatically get a leg up in convos, but here the choices with a 'profiency' icon next to them often aren't the best choices. For instance I picked theology as my study background and the convo options this unlocks are mostly lame platitudes that I rarely picked. I also picked 'bookworm' as background and picking that often made you seem out of touch as well, like caring more about books in the library than people. Mind you there are still times when I picked the option with the icon, but it's always worth it to read every option.
This game really gives the impression of being a passion project, kudos to the creators for actually doing something they like, we need more games like this.
I will consider buying it and giving it a try
I remember seeing on interviews one of the directors has called it as such, that it was kinda worked on and off for a while and that he was comfortable making it an actual sellable product because of Game Pass, saying that he knew making something so niche and specific would only really work on a service like it, and Microsoft appearantly agreed
Oh thank God, Jake is covering this!
I missed/forgot about this one. First saw it being streamed and _-hoped-__ _*_needed_* more info *ASAP!* And my man, Jake _“The Grain of Salt”_ Baldino serves me up this perfect slice! Thanks!
From your description, it sounds like a more story, less management version of Yes, Your Grace which makes me interested to try this! And when it comes to history being shown and talked of in games, that was one of my favorite things about the older Assassin's Creed games when you would go by something important and it would tell you things about it :) I've always been more of a visual learner since I was a kid, so I love this kind of thing!
Even if I don't end up liking this game, I'm glad I bought it. It's always good to support creative people breaking out and doing something that they want to do, even knowing that it's not going to make as much money.
saw this for pre-download on the PC game pass and I was attracted by the art style, didn’t even know what it was about but wanted to find out. also didn’t expected you to cover this game even. thank you for this review. i’ll definitely check this out on the weekend.🎉
being part of the "disco elysium night in the woods" demographic, i'm totally picking up this game
This is absolutely up my alley. Wish there were more creative games like this coming out.
I love games with a historical (think Kingdom Come Deliverance) or even a constructed historical (think Disco Elysium) element that you can sink your teeth into, learn about, and immerse yourself in.
I was looking forward to this since it was announced and I've put in about 3 hours into the game and it's been absolutely fantastic so far.
Whilst you're right that it isn't for everyone, I hope more people would give it a try. The art design is the best I've seen this year and I hope more developers are given the chance to try passion projects like this. So much thought and heart in this game.
I am hearing it is like a medieval Disco Elysium and that is easily the best game of the entire generation so i will play this as soon as i finish Monkey Island lol. I am stuck on the last door in chapter 5 and wondering if there is a bug as i am sure i have the right answer lol
Medieval Disco Elysium is the perfect pitch NICE
@@JakeBaldino Thanks Mate. I have played more and more of Pentiment now and really enjoying it. It's such a pleasure to truly experience great creative writing and expression in a game. Most games sadly lack this quality and choose style over substance.
Obsidian deserves such a pat on the back for pushing narrative and story in games forwards since KOTOR 2
This and Return to Monkey Island both on Gamepass at the same time is staggering value :)
Dude, I'm so glad you did this. It caught my eye but I wasn't really sure. You've piqued my interest. 👍🙏
Your title sums this game up like many others I've started and never finished. I really do love the history here, though. This is gonna' be something I really want to finish, but I'll have to keep kicking myself to do so.
Not sure if this is one I will buy or not, but I appreciate Obsidian doing something different. I want to partly support just for that, but maybe on a sale.
Just get game pass.
It's a work of love! It's gorgeous, entertaining and informative... I'm glad that a project of this size (you can see that it's budget must have been substantial) can come out given it's quit niche. Maybe because of it being a 1st party gamepass game. Annyway, I'm 10 hours in and loving it!
Thank you for the spoiler free review! ☺️ I finished the game earlier today and was somewhat shaken. It was a very dramatic and emotional playthrough for me. I was very surprised by the depth and nuance of the story. I actually was born and raised in Bavaria not far from the area where Tassing is supposed to be located. I also have a background of medieval studies (music and literature) so this game really blew me away. The game felt very true to the history and area. It reminded me of many experiences and conversations I had (in the also very rural and catholic village I grew up in). Of course we're not living in the middle ages anymore but the themes definitely struck a chord. I'm very happy that this game was made with so much love and research. Hopefully many people will enjoy it.
Jake, I love you from Before You Buy…I’ve already been playing this, and I adore it. I’m glad that you see it for more than it was. This game is pure bliss for me on Xbox, and I’m glad to see that you loved it, too
Finished it yesterday. It was absolutely insane and I'm happy that such niche projects are still possible and available for nerds like myself to enjoy, especially on a big platform such as gamepass.
One of the many things I LOVE about your reviews is how you just don't care if a game is indie, AA, AAA... and just talk about games you are interested in or you think other people might be interested in. Thanks!
Big up from Belgium
I'm after recently reading The Tower of Fools by Andrzej Sapkowski. And while it does go into fantasy elements (Witcher author after all), it did a great job at describing the middle ages in Europe, this game covers the time period around 100 years later so should be an interesting history lesson to see what factions/religions/cultures are still dominant. Have this downloaded already and looking forward to jumping into it.
I was very excited by this when it first was shown and then forgot about it. Thanks for making this video! Definitely going to pick this up!
Appreciate your input Jake, thanks for another great one
This is one of those games I'm gonna play for about 2h a week, and finish it after a couple of months
Not a bad idea
Or a couple of ages.....or never lol
@@woofaki5550 nah. i like story driven stuff...i'm just a very slow reader
In the middle of Act 2 and I’m fucking loving it.
I finished it today. It was really fresh and fun experience. It’s really different and sometimes I wish it had less conversations and more action but it was probably goal of Obsidian to show how slow in a way was sixteenth century and it’s life.
This game intrigued me since the announcement. I've lived Obsidian for years so I figured I'd give it a go. I love many aspects of games so I always see how they are on their own merits. I really like this game and love the passion put into this very unique project. I wanna keep seeing cool smaller scale games like this from Xbox.
Hey Jake, I tried playing Tony hawks pro skater remake a week ago and ended up really enjoying it, I don’t think I would have tried to play it without you talking about it.
Great video as always
Love to hear it.
Also thanks!!
What a great video. I recently got Xbox Game Pass for PC and thought this game seemed interesting and I am so glad I had the opportunity to experience it. Its a true masterpiece. Unlike anything else Ive ever played before. Kind of similar to point and click adventure games but at the same time something very new and fresh. I devoured it on my first play through and I love absolutely everything about it. I really hope more games like this come out because this is an incredible way to tell a story whether educational, for fun or both.
This game is amazing. And graceful at that. It doesn’t hold you by the hand. It painfully teaches you that just because you have the skill to say something, you don’t have to do it. The highlight is how the story individually develops for you. It is like rediscovering you own humanity. Andreas is cryptic at times about his status until you let it happen. And it feels like you are in his soul, struggling yourself to admit your flaws. Which are his. It mimics life in so many facets. Like how it works with fonts to telegraph Someone speaking from simple or educated descent. Or even a confession scene that drags on for a while - just for me to realize that this is like the real thing. It decelerates our modern game antics in a very human way.
After been gaming for over 30 years, i`m so happy to see all the indies and other games like this gaining popularity. immortality, undertale, dead cells, Katana zero, Gris, hollow knight etc are so refreshing between GOW, COD, Elden ring, GTA and all other trippel A. I like all games, be open minded and give it a try:)
I wish Sony would do something like this. Not specifically this style of game but just a smaller project with a smaller team thats out of the box creatively.
You're right Jake, I probably won't play this one. BUT your passion here kept me watching this video and just hearing about it is very cool. I always love hearing people talking about things they love even if I don't love it
Great video, will probably pick this up around christmas. Thanks!
It's a game that I had no idea I would love as much as I did. So good, amazing art style. Simple yet very complex and complete.
Pentiment is a top 5 game of the year for me so far. I feel like I almost had the right my first run but whiffed it at the end. Looking forward to going back and getting it right with the knowledge I can do so or go in a completely different direction.
Your best work to date! Amazing review, thank you very much.
Thank you for making this Jake. I love this game so much.
Hope it's successful. I'd love to see more studios take a chance like this. Games have become so homogenised lately they may as well just start calling them "FPS #108" and "Open World RPG #215"

I'm now in my second playthrough. The first playthrough was respectful Andreas. Now I'm being Jerk Andreas. I think there is a lot there, and it is visually stunning in a lot of ways. Just sooooo cool.
Love this game. Wow. Mind blown. Am a history and theology buff. Can't get enough. We need more games like this!
The game has been in my radar for a while now, you made it a priority on my next to play list :) Thanks!😊
I love that after all these years, Obsidian still makes games they would enjoy playing. Their games have that OG RPG feel, with tons of systems that (if you're into that kind of game) are so fun to interact with. When you make decisions in their games, they have a real impact on the world. No modern studio does that better imo.
Love medieval games! Started playing this and really enjoying it. Seems you just need to play this when you’re relaxed and unstressed, yet want to take it slow yet definitely use your brain a bit. Lots and lots of reading and dialogue in this one.
Really glad I clicked this video. I'm a huge fan of what Obsidian has been doing with the old-school approach to RPGs, but I don't necessarily have the time to invest into a Pillars of Eternity. Thanks Jake, for putting this on my radar.
I jumped in not knowing much about it, but being a huge history buff. I got to say I absolutely loved it and have already done two playthroughs about to do another. We need more games like this out there.
lmfao someone said that it made their art history heart happy and I think that happens to me as well! I loooove this game to bits.
Thanks Jake for doing this video. Really like the look of this game and always interesting to hear what you think while it downloads!
I've been curious about this one, but while intriguing, it doesn't sound like it would hold my attention for the long haul. Still, appreciate that you took the time to cover this and games like it.
God, I loved this game. One of my all time favourites. The storytelling is on a different level.
Just downloaded this! Looking forward to giving it a try when I have time 🤔
the first hour is slow but it picks up! hope you enjoy
@@JakeBaldino okay that’s good to hear! I really love it’s art style, reminds me of that game Rock of Ages
@@believeinmatter Rock of ages was awesome. Good call
Thanks Jake! I've been interested in this one since I saw it. Hope to play it on my Steam Deck soon!
I gave it another chance with an adaptive controller set up. Hitting one button over and over is hard on my hands but I am now officially in love with this game. I am SO glad I tried it again. This is a really well written game.
I played this because of your recommendation. Just finished the game and I loved it, thanks for bringing it to my attention. It was a really unique and memorable experience
Glad to hear you dug it
I just rolled credits on this! I throughly enjoyed it even if it had some pacing issues for me. Really unique idea, need to see more games like this get made.
I was completely blown away by this game. Glad to see a video on it. Felt great to mix a game like this in between sweaty Destiny 2 & Halo Infinite PVP sessions. Kinda made me feel like a kid on my parents computer. - Isaiah
This game was one of the best surprises I've had in 30 years of gaming. Had low expectations at first, but omg did it deliver. I hate reading, I'm more audiobook, loved this game, didn't feel like you're reading a book. The story is so good you just get hooked. Every aspect of the game is spot on. The only option I'd like is to be able to turn on/off the pen 🖋️ sounds.
Had Pentiment released a week or two earlier it might have proven a wildcard in The Game Awards.
Except for the bit where the raycis art director turned the family of Jesus, a bunch of Jewish people, into black folk. Given the antisemitism in lopular black culture, that skin swap makes for a case of over aggressive cultural appropriation.
The games awards are in the habit of not rewarding racist screeds.
@@bobroberts2581 my brother in Christ, Jewish people from the 1st century on Israel weren't blonde with blue eyes, their depiction of Jesus's family is historically accurate
I love this game the story, its so much fun to follow, I've just finished the first act and I'm already excited to play through it again and see what happens if I went down a path.
Haven’t yet and was on the fence about it but the reviews I’ve seen have changed my mind about it, thx
I've drifted away from games in the last few months, but this one had me enthralled from start to finish and kind of reignited my desire to play games. I also want to learn more about the Holy Roman Empire and the Reformation. Reminded me of how I felt after playing Gabriel Knight 2 as a kid - I wanted to learn all about Richard Wagner and King Ludwig II.
Would love to see this art style, and ones like it, in the future. A nice distinct look for a game
Just finished this game about an hour ago. It was AMAZING. Awesome twists around every corner! If you can, definitely try it.
This is a game that you could play over and over from the start at least a couple times. 10/10, loved it!
just started, and im already so impressed with just how detailed and my history degree is finally useful
This art style reminds me of Dragon’s Lair back in the early DVD days. Why they didn’t make more of those I’ll never know, cause it was dope.
As someone who loves games like NitW and Disco Elysium, this looks like exactly my kind of thing, and I'm sure the writing is solid with a team from Obsidian having handled it. I wasn't quite sure about this one from the visual style just based on earlier previews I had seen, but I'm really glad you made a video on it, definitely going to pick it up now. Even the way you run around talking to people and the flow of gameplay looks very reminiscent of NitW actually. Also, the whole storybook framing of the story where you can pull back and look at footnotes about historical references and things is so damn cool. I'm no art history or medieval history buff but that sort of nerdy stuff really appeals to me.
I've never played a game like this. I'm trying it and so far I'm digging it. I'm glad they've kept the dialogue between characters to like a couple sentences though.
Thank you for pointing out what the red underlined text was. I must have spaced when they explained that. I kept thinking it was auto-correct and was very confused. Grammarly didn't exist back then.
I love playing this one after a long days work, just to sit down and chill, talk to a few characters, and continue solving some mystery
Thanks for this, Jake. Definitely going to play this, thanks to you 😁
I came back to this video after taking the time to play through the game this week. I loved it, started a new game already and I think I’ll probably end up getting 100% just for how much I enjoy being in that world.
Definitely wanna check this out
The felt so slow and dull at first, I pushed myself to keep playing. I’m so glad that I did. I got so lost in the world and was intrigued by how nuanced all the different perspectives the npcs had. I had a blast playing this game. What a gem.
Thanks for putting the spotlight on this indie game. Obsidian takes a lot of risks. Great studio.
Thank you for this review, I'll be downloading this tonight!
