The Lost Liberals Of India - Sagarika Ghose - Journalist & Author - At Algebra Conversations

  • In the hyper-fraught conversations around patriotism and nationalism that take centerstage in public discourse today, “liberals” have come to stand for “un-Indianness”.
Sagarika Ghose - celebrated journalist for three decades and author of four books - however, it is notions of force, muscle-flexing and dominance that are unpatriotic, and Gandhi’s ideas of accommodation, friendship and generosity that are at the heart of what constitutes an Indian tradition.
And to expand on how liberalism is a building block of Indianness; and why there is no greater way to be Indian than by being a challenger, we are in conversation with the articulate commentator on dissent, the need for argument and why she is a proud liberal in Battling Big State.

Ghose's dad, who headed Doordarshan in late 80's, tried to block Ramayan serial saying its "not secular enough". Ramandand Sagar ran pillar to post to get his show on air. Sagar finally had to pay twice the regular fee.

Informed conservatives believe in individual right not bcz they are conservative but bcz they are informed. Indian society is largely feudal and that's bcz we play on the worst of conservative school of thought, and it exists only within the realm of culture and identity nothing more. Whilst developed countries used conservative ideas to further economic interests and amass wealth.

"The price of liberty is eternal vigilance…." What a true statement.....!
We can speak about freedom, liberty and all sorts of ideal and noble things but ultimately what counts will be the "survival of the fittest". If this fittest is honest, noble and righteous, the country is saved otherwise fear and chaos will prevail. And I think, I should add "Rational" too among the different qualities this fittest should possess.....

In a globalized world, secularism looks so basic while Hinduism becomes a unique characteristic of India. Everyone knows that about 75-80% of Indians identify as Hindus. A more important number is that 90-95% of all Hindus in the world live in India. I believe that's the reason for the rise in Hindu-consciousness.
In the past, when countries were less connected, India was a more insular country where the Hindu majority had more dividing forces like caste, language than unifying forces. Sadly for Indian liberals, globalization worked against them.

Being a liberal has become a bad thing not only in India but also in most places in the world. The world as well as India is split. But those supporting the liberals are going down over time. The reason for why that is happening is not discussed anywhere. And if it were to be discussed, it wont be discussed honestly. Sagarika is correctly saying that the liberals are being called Jehadist, anti national, urban naxal, presstitute, comunist, etc. But if she was honest, she would also say that the words are not used merely to insult. They convey a meaning. Those are relevant words to some extent.

Yes mam you are 100% correct, I loved your thoughts. Gandhi was a true liberal, I wholeheartedly admire him for what he was. But there are people who use true liberals for their own benifits, thats how Gandhiji was used by vested interested people to break the nation into 3 parts. Thats what scares me. And that two parts become islamic states where even thinking about liberalism is a crime.

Instead, it is a historical fact that chrislam wiped off indigenous and inclusive heterodox cultures without exception all over the world.
