      Honestly, I think it's the check down that's opening up the scoring.
      Jimmy was so awful at escaping pressure that he never got to his checkdown on a lot of plays. Brock is moving in the pocket, and whar that does is:
      1. Buys time to find the checkdown
      2. Gets defenders moving out of the flat, and leaving checkdown options wide open

Purdy is already good enough to help make some plays, but the fact there's still room to improve I feel like could really speak well to how he could look in the future.
    I also think that some of the things were his receivers not being on the same page as Brock, like JT said. That gets fixed with time with his guys, which considering he's a rookie, he's obviously going to get lots of in the future. Overall, you can tell Brock has good feel for the game, and he's got unexpected ability to make plays with his legs

  • @LoanwordEggcorn
    @LoanwordEggcorn Pƙed rokem +31

    Hi J.T., Thanks for finally getting back to Brock Purdy. Brock is still learning and improving. There are some reads he's still missing, but he's already much better at scheme understanding and execution than either Jimmy or Trey, and that's incredible for a rookie. He's also got excellent elusiveness and can create plays when the designed play is well-covered. We have a franchise QB, and it's not Trey.
    Keep in mind that Brock has been in the offense for less than a year. It usually takes highly experienced NFL starters a full year of playing to get comfortable in Kyle's offense. Brock has done very well in a few months, and mostly with mental reps on the practice squad. That's amazing.
    His emotional intelligence (EQ) is off the charts too, and that's part of how he's able to stay calm and play well.
    Also we need to credit first-time QB coach Brian Griese for cutting Jimmy's long term interception rate IN HALF, while developing Trey, and making significant improvements in Brock's very good college game, while getting him up to speed in Kyle's offense quickly and effectively. (In your breakdowns of Brock's college tape, some of the flaws you spotted have already been coached out by the 49ers.)
    31:08 Usually on that concept, Kittle gets the shallowest route. #58 was looking for Kittle to do that, and it messed him up. Instead Deebo went shallow and Kittle went slant, so it was a deliberate switch up from tendency. That's why it looked unusual to you too. It was an exchange concept.

    • @forty9r9r7
      @forty9r9r7 Pƙed rokem +1

      Yeah I think the QB coach and improved pass protection is very underrated. Yes Jimmy was playing hurt last year but I still think his improvement was shocking and not just explainable by surgery. He was #3 overall in efficiency before he got hurt and now Brock has the #1 rating since starting. And the irony is that all of this was intended to help trey develop but it ended up benefiting the other QBs

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn Pƙed rokem +2

      @@forty9r9r7 I definitely credit QB coach Brian Griese and O-Line Coach Chris Foerster for major improvements this year.

    • @forty9r9r7
      @forty9r9r7 Pƙed rokem +2

      @@LoanwordEggcorn Agreed. It's interesting that Trey and Brock are kind of opposites of each other. Trey has the raw athletic ability, numbers (like height/size) but didn't have a lot of big game experience, whereas Brock wasn't thought of as having athletic ability, is considered short for an NFL QB, but had a lot of big game experience at Iowa. I forget if this channel talked about it but I have to wonder if the NFL starts evaluating QBs differently now.

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn Pƙed rokem

      @@forty9r9r7 That's my take too. Trey succeeded by running tough and passing well on relatively rare occasions. He took good care of the ball, but didn't really do much conventional QBing in terms of passes.
      Brock threw nearly 5x as many passes in college than Trey and did it against much better competition in the Big 12. But he was also developing as a good passer and student of the game since his freshman year in high school. Trey, not so much.
      Brock was shorter so kind of had to play with excellent fundamentals and scheme understanding, like a Drew Brees. Brock has mostly excellent footwork; nearly perfect most of the time.
      Trey has some very inconsistent footwork at times. It's partially been coached out, but keep creeping back in at times. That causes an inconsistent platform and inconsistent throws and resulting misses.
      Trey made major improvements in his scheme and situational football understanding, but is still pretty far behind Jimmy or Trey.
      Brock also has underrated athletic ability, particularly movement and agility so he's able to escape pressure and make plays with his legs, but it's usually to set up the pass, especially in the NFL. (He ran more in college.) Now, he's always looking to throw, even when scrambling.
      So Brock does have some sneaky athleticism mostly in lower body movement skills, but not nearly as much arm as Trey.
      Brock was drafted low due to height. He's only a slightly taller than Brees. I agree those evaluations too often don't take into account actual QB skill. I'm glad the 49ers did.

    During the December 15, 2022 Seahawks game, Brock Purdy had broken ribs. He almost didn't start. Kyle Shanahan was going to put in Josh Johnson. But Brock Purdy felt he could play through the pain, so he took a pain shot. Brock played through the pain and played quite well. Most fans and media don't know about this but you can Google it. What sets Brock Purdy apart from other rookie QBs and a lot of NFL QBs are his intangible skills. The types of skill sets people aren't aware of or understand. You can't draw them on a screen dissecting them. Then add on his gameplay and he plays very well. I'm excited for his career in the NFL. It will be fun to watch him grow as a QB.

    The thing that has really stood out to me about Purdy, is his almost sixth sense for pressure, it seems like he always knows when protection is breaking down, even on his blind side. I don't know if they have a call out or something, but I've seen him perfectly evade pressure from a guy that wasn't in his field of vision about 20 times, it always blows me away and to still be doing it as a rookie in the playoffs is just bananas.

  • @MisterMasterShafter1

    Purdy is no fluke. This young man can play... and it's not just what he's doing, it's also the quickness in which he's doing it... the speed that he processes everything, and then makes plays. Madden used to say about Montana, "These things he's doing are NOT easy, but he makes them LOOK easy!" Mr. Purdy reminds me of a young #16 back in the day. No joke. The Niners can absolutely bring home another Lombardi with him.

    I really appreciate your breakdowns. Solid work.
    In that first clip of the linebacker closing the window knocking down the ball in the red zone..
    If Purdy quick pumps out side or just fake pumps it to the spot he tried to throw it in..that backer would have bit all the way and he had aiyuk a tenth of a second later wide open on the other side of that backer position.
    The pass protection was good so he still had a tick or two.
    I'm sure film study and review like this has coaches both frothing at the mouth and hungrily salivating over the teachable moments and the potentials for splash plays/scores.
    I will never intentionally desire to deal with that kinda stress.

    Great review Coach! One thing I personally have been analyzing about Brock Purdy’s game is his ability to flee the pocket and make quick decisions. He makes plays with his feet and I can see him causing trouble for opposing defenders reading whether or not he’ll pass or run (they can quarterback spy). Purdy’s pocket presence separates him from Jimmy Garappolo while Purdy can extend a play with his legs while Jimmy most of the time will take a sack. I’m not saying he’ll be the next Tom Brady because Purdy simply has more weapons, but his reads are definitely top tier to any quarterback I’ve seen.

    @11:15 - What I liked on the Aiyuk miscommunication/incompletion play was Purdy's willingness to challenge deep. We haven't seen many deep downfield throws from him yet. Most of his big chunk throws have been in the 15-25 yd range. Deebo was open coming across the field at about 10-15 yds downfield. Purdy could have taken the easy chunk and a first down with room for YAC, but he went for the home run. He passed up the open 12-yd pass for the 40+ yd TD bomb w/ single coverage. Now, sure, it didn't work out.....and on this one play the throw to Deebo would have had a better result. But long term, beyond this one play, I love that Purdy made that throw--even if incomplete--just to show safeties and defensive coordinators that he has that in his arsenal. The lack of that throw is part of why Garoppolo has been limited. Jimmy G has shown that he consistently can't hit that throw, so much so that he really doesn't even attempt it much. Defenses have been able to creep up on him because they haven't been worried about that over the top throw. Receivers don't even bother running routes that deep, and if/when they do, it's usually just as a decoy which the safeties don't bite on. This throw--40+ yds, outside the lines, on the mark, in a very catchable location if Aiyuk continues--served notice to the league that he can and will torch them. That unlike other recent 49ers QB's, he is hunting for that home run throw. He still needs to actually hit that home run a time or two to really scare defenses, but for right now just this flash seemed like enough to put it in the minds of the 1-3 defenses he has left to face this season. Even if it does nothing other than to keep defenses honest and stop them from sliding up and cutting off his 10-20 yard windows, that throw--even incomplete--served its purpose. AND, perhaps just as importantly, that throw may have put the idea into Shanahan's head that he can dial a home run play or two per game and let the kid rip it.

    I think a REALLY simple summation of the BCB show is; We are seeing basically by the book, a scenario that the old days of rookie QB development would be. A guy that started 4 years in college, got time to sit on the bench and learn from vets, got time to develop relationships with teammates AND timing with the backs and recievers. And big shocker...by the latter third of a full season, he's basically ready to roll and move forward.

    Man, I'm excited about this playoff run with Brock. I'm cautiously optimistic. The defense and running game have been stellar, and they will need to continue to do so, especially with the possibility of having to go to Philly. But all it takes is one bad game from a rookie QB for this run to end. If it does, I can't wait for what the future holds at QB for my 49ers.

      @Jinnij Brock has to just limit mistakes and make good reads to continue to give us a great chance. He doesn't have to win it all on his own. The difference is that veterans are just that, veterans. They are more likely to shake off a bad pick or a missed opportunity because they have been there before. I am cautiously optimistic and yes realistic as well. If the season ends Sunday, so be it. Hopefully, next year at camp, we can see if Lance was worth all those draft picks. Having some competition in camp and not just being given the starting job and having to earn it will give us a real look at Lance and at Brock. Either way, I'm excited about this playoff run. Go 49ers.

At times I’ve seen a bit Drew Brees’s game too, but definitely Farve’s wind up throwing motion, coupled with a bit of a haphazardness to get a bit more out of some bad situations, even if it’s just an elongated run to get rid of the ball rather than taking a sack.

He will scramble for 1st downs, he's tough (Stands in pocket till last second) He puts the chip of being overlooked on his shoulder and dares you to knock it off. He is prepared, poised and has pin-point accuracy, and he makes players around him better. Can he throw it 80s yards?? Probably not. But he will get it to the open man who can take it 80.
