Sagar explains what an analog clock is to Gukesh!

In the last few years we don't see any analog clocks being used in the world of chess! It has all become digital. That's why a youngster like Gukesh has no idea of what an analog clock is and how it is used. IM Sagar Shah is now 33 years old and when he was young he had played with the analog clocks! And so explains to Gukesh what an analog clock is and how it works! This video was shot at the ChessBase office in Germany by Frederic Friedel.

How does gukesh not know analog clocks. I'm 19 now, not much older than Gukesh. I was enrolled in a chess academy when I was in 4th grade( obviously much later than Gukesh, but our coach used to make us play with analog clocks to improve our time management.

That is how all old masters played, from Lasker and Alekhine to Fischer and Kasparov .You never really knew exactly how many seconds you had left, but when red flag fell, your time was over .And there were no increments.
With digital clocks and increments time losses became more rare , but time is still an important factor of the game. You cant have excellent results if your time management is poor
I recently watched live game between 2 grandmasters for tournament win. White had an extra bishop and completely winning position, but only 8 seconds on clock and was playing on increments 3 seconds per move. Black had 8 minutes on clock . Having so much time paid off. He won a piece back and converted complicated rook endgame to win .

I am one of those privileged Chess players who owned the analog chess clock back in 2000-2001! I had my uncle in US bring it with him on his visit to India. Still have it, but only one side of the clock works now.
