  • Come along for a ride in the Porterfield!
    This episode didn’t come out quite as envisioned due to some operator induced technical issues with the 360 camera, but at least I got a bit of footage! 😂

    Great video Jared! Back in 1993 I built a 1/6 scale RC model of a Collegiate and called the Standards Div of the FAA to try and get some information on any local Porterfields. As luck would have it, the person I talked to on the phone was none other than Leroy Blum! We spoke for some time and he invited me to go for a flight in "Sweet P Field ", out at Cable Airport, in Upland CA, where he kept it at the time. I'll never forget that flight, on a beautiful Sunday afternoon , cruising around the foothills of the San Gabriel mountains. Thank you for sharing the video. It brought back many happy memories. Many years later my brother bought a Collegiate project, NC32368, whish is now in the hands of Allison H. in Fort Worth. Happy to see that your P-Field is still being flown regularly.

    I have some video of Sweet P Field flying the pattern at Cable in the early 90s. Also a whole flight with me flying her taken by Tony Blum, the then owner's son, from the back seat. I'll have to search it out.

    Nice video. Always wondered how Sweet Pea compared to my father-in-laws (Fred Hollaway) cp65. Pretty much the same, sweet flying birds. Your video brought back quite a few memories. Especially flying back to Blakesburg a bunch of times. Thanks. (Bill McCown)

      It is a really nice flying plane! I wasn’t too happy with the camera placement on this flight, I’m going to see if I can get it down a bit lower below the wing next time and it should really feel like your along for a ride with the 360 camera 😄

    I had never heard of this plane, thanks for this video. I have my taildragger time mainly in the J-3 and really loved it. This plane
    looks like some fun for sure !! Well built. How is the ground handling ?
    Thanks again, really enjoyed your video,

      Ahh you're welcome!, there are not too many of them out there. It flies real nice. Pretty light on the controls and the ground handling is good. (cable brakes aren't too strong however). I hope to make a few more videos with it in the near future :)

    So, would you say you prefer the 1940 over the ‘39?

    • @trustyaeronaut
      @trustyaeronaut  Před 4 měsíci

      Interesting question Triple T! 😂 I’ve not flown a ‘39…it looks like the ‘39s came with a 50hp Continental 🥹, whereas the ‘40s came with the 65hp Continental! 15hp is a pretty big difference in these low powered flying machines, so I’m pretty sure I would chose the ‘40 everytime! 😂

    Wing tanks, solo from front seat, obviously upgraded engine C-85? Beautiful plane and one plane I would jump at over a nice J-3.

    • @altaloma7789
      @altaloma7789 Před 9 měsíci +1

      The Pfield was set up to fly from the front seat by design from the factory. You had to watch how much weight you put in the rear seat and cargo compartment. They all pretty much flew slightly tail heavy. The wing tanks were STC'd, not sure why because you were so limited by aft CG. Still, pretty close to stock.

    • @kenstewart5991
      @kenstewart5991 Před 9 měsíci

      @altaloma7789 Slightly tail heavy, hmm. Seems like a perfect plane to upgrade too a 0-235. The increase in power would also put another 100lbs of weight in the nose and solve the CG problem of weight in back seat.

    • @trustyaeronaut
      @trustyaeronaut  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Ahh, just an a-65. It does seem to perform pretty well. I don’t own it, just get to fly it :) I was told originally you could solo it from either seat, but once they put the wing tanks in, then it was solo from the front only. It would probably be a rocket ship with a 0-235!

    • @altaloma7789
      @altaloma7789 Před 9 měsíci

      Remember that the airplane is a prewar antique, and flying examples are worth much more with their original engines. By putting in an O-235 also ups the wing loading and reduces the useful load. There aren't many Porterfields left. These days, every one still flying is a respected treasure. The most I've heard anyone putting in the front has been 75hp. @@kenstewart5991

    • @flyswryan
      @flyswryan Před 9 měsíci

      An O-235 would wipe out your useful load. Solo from the rear and she wallows around quite a bit, just ask the knuckleheads at Old Rhinebeck who can shake their J-3 mentality. Solo from the front, and she flies coordinated, even with your feet flat on the floor.
      With the modified M-6 airfoil, she flies as fast as a Lusconbe, Taylorcraft, and Interstate Cadet with 65hp, so why would you want to ruin a great design with a 115hp boat anchor up front?
