    Autogenic Drainage Airway Clearance Technique
Autogenic drainage is an airway clearance technique to loosen secretions.
It is a popular respiratory medicine physiotherapy technique that can be completed as a a home remedy.
Prepare for the technique by moistening your throat with a drink of warm water, blowing your nose, and sitting upright.
Place your hands over your upper abdomen and chest. Try to let your abdomen rise and fall during the breathing technique rather than your chest, this is a sign that you are using your main breathing muscle called your diaphragm.
Take a normal breath in followed by a prolonged breath out, exhaling as far as possible and resisting any urge to cough.
If you can breathe in through your nose it will moisten the air, and if you have a cough reduce the chance of triggering it.
From here take a small breath in and then exhale as far as possible again. Repeating this 2-3 times.
During this procedure you may hear your lungs rattle, indicating some loosening of secretions.
To progress take a larger breath in, aiming for a mid-range breath, followed by small breaths out. Repeat 2-3 times.
Finally, take a full breath in followed by small breaths out 2-3 times.
You should now by ready to shift some mucus with a cough or better still the huff cough.

So helpful! As I have gotten older, everytime a cold goes to my chest, I ended up suffering with a cough that can be quite intense and linger for a month or longer. Cough syrups, etc., don't really help. Fortunately, I found your site, with techniques that really make a difference.

I have bad emetophobia (fear of vomit) so I can gag really easily on mucus and it triggers panic attacks which can be very disturbing for me. These techniques help me clear stuff gently without panicking myself.

    This technique worked for me.
It's great to put into daily practice.
Definitely relaxes or eradicates the cough.
When the mucus comes back, simply repeat the technique

I'm not sure what's going on but when I get sick, I get an awful cough that lasts me months.. I've tried this method twice now and each time it's caused me to vomit quite a bit. Going on 2 months for this cough.. could it just be an excessive amount of mucus? No medicine helps me, this is the only thing that does anything for me

Been trying to learn these methods to get phlegm up. I hear this hardest to learn but best to do. Im still having a problem where I can get everything up. But the finally spot, it just stops. I can feel it there, hear it, loud crackles etc. but it seems to get weaker and then it goes back to like nothing was there. Im maybe successful 15% of the time, so I know what its like to get it up. also got one of those percussion massage guns and use that aerobika to try to work stuff up. If I can get stuff up the flood gates seem to open. I also seem to have to drink milk or ice cream to get stuff coming up sometimes........ Is it ok to drink something in between if you do get something up, would that help. Sometimes I can be 12 hours or sometimes days jammed up, started last winter. 61 but still work hard in construction, just I get phlegm build up. Last night got pissed off and took 3 mucinex, within 30 mins I started to cough stuff up. Took a lot more today but I was coughing little bits up but still felt jammed.
just cant seem to get phlegm when it gets to be where it should be, its so thick

Where is this mucous coming from in the first place? Is it a post-nasal drip or something else?

“The body produces mucus to protect the lungs and help remove debris. Sometimes, the body may produce extra mucus, such as in the case of an infection.” Medical News Today.
For me the biggest problem is Asthma. When my asthma acts up I always have a problem with my lungs getting tight, and then an over production of mucus. Mucus is all over the body 😬

Digestive problems, foods that create inflammation in your body. Figure out which ones and don't eat them. First guess, and safe, is dairy.

Hi .. at what age you can start this technique? I have issues with morning mucus build ups and coughs when I get cold or sinus .. and my toddler is 3 years old and she has pre-school wheezing whenever it’s winter or she gets any virus or cold ..
can I practice this with my toddler too while I do this .. ?? Please do advice .. my toddler uses salbumatol whenever she has shortness of breath currently . She is good at following directions. I only doubt whether she is allowed to do this . Thanks 😊

As a simple breathing exercise it is often taught to children if they can master it. You may find the simple huff cough easier. I have videos on this too. All the best to you and let us know how you get on. Note: I advise a professional assessment and this can not be medical advise, just general and educational. Thank you

Is being upright fully necessary or is laying down flat effective as well? Reason I ask is that I feel like I can breath deeper laying flat but I don't know if there is a mechanic of being upright and laying down defeats the purpose

    • @ThePhysioChannel
      @ThePhysioChannel  Před 2 měsíci +1

10-4 thank you. I've been doing it this way while working today. I work from home so I'm in this position all day anyways. It is indeed helping. I practiced it over night while laying and still seems to work but is indeed way more effective upright. Recovering from lingering cold and this makes coughs super productive. I felt silly doing it initially but 100% absolutely works! New sub and I'll have to check out your other content
