Ajijic Mexico: BEFORE Retired in Ajijic Mexico We LOST 50% of our RETIREMENT SAVINGS

  • Retire in Ajijic Mexico How We LOST HALF of our RETIREMENT Income and SAVINGS.
In this video we tell the story of how we were planning and saving for retirement. One day, after 6 years of traveling / RVing through the US, we got a call from our financial advisor saying that we really need to work on our financial management and personal finance.
The stock market crashed and we lost half of our investments which forced us to go into survival mode and take a serious look at our retirement plan. At our age, losing half our retirement savings forced us into living frugal.
We are baby boomers and a lot of people in our demographic would benefit greatly by becoming expats in Mexico. Mexico offers excellent options for cheap retirement or retiring on social security.
We decided to look into options abroad - eventually moving to Mexico to retire cheap. If you're interested in budgeting or investing, we hope to help you improve your financial education and personal finance situation. This is our story, what will yours be?

2008 was a VERY tough year. It literally was a "perfect storm" where basically any type of investment crashed. I was lucky like you -- I held on to my investments and all rebounded. HOWEVER, I did do one thing (I was in my mid 40s), I did get a financial adviser and was told to do 60% stocks / 40% bonds instead of being heavily invested in equities (which I was at the time - I was doing my own investing). 2008 was a wake-up call for me - I seeded professional help. I basically froze and didn't do anything in 2007-2009 while my portfolio tanked. There was nothing I could do. Again - LOVE your videos. AND MAYBE in 2019 I will make it down to Ajijic for a week with a buddy of mine. Hopefully, we can take you two out to dinner.

Thanks Jerry & Lorri for all your great stories. We love it :) My mexican wife (Gdl) and me (German) lived and worked in MEXICO for 9 years and we are thinking to go back to MEXICO (we are now in USA) in retirement in the next years. Your videos give us a great guideline for the next steps. Year end we might visit Ajijic to feel this community. Thanks and keep on !

We all lost tons of money in 2008. Now no more stocks right? It was a good time to buy real estate at the crash. And if you bot stock right after the crash, if you had known that, you would've made a lot of money. You can make 8% interest in a bank account now in Mexico, right? Did you buy a house in Mexico? Hey thanks Jerry and Lori! Great story and videos. Maybe see you in Mexico.

I enjoyed hearing your background and how you came to live in Mexico. A few points I got out of it is, don't pay for an advisor who is only advising after the fact. If you are invested in quality investments, hang on, it will come back. Finally, live within your own means, because you never know what the future will bring you.

The company I worked for went belly-up in 2010 and took our company retirement with them. It has been difficult since, just living off Social Security, after my savings was used up. I own my home and that has been my blessing. I am thinking of selling it and moving to Mexico. The only thing that keeps me from doing so is that my children are spread out throughout the states and I would not get to see them as much as I do now.

It's getting harder and harder to live on Social Security in the United States. One alternative is if you move to Mexico maybe they can come down and visit you.

I fully understand what you are saying about unexpected investment losses. My IRA has been managed by advisors on Barron’s top 100 list. Guess what? The only thing that saved my IRA from the Great Recession was that I lived long enough for it to recover to pre Recession levels.
I think the big downside comes at age 70 1/2 when you are required to make distributions to meet the RMD. If there is a market downturn you have to take the required percentage out or be penalized. This accelerates your losses. Maybe a ROTH IRA is the way to go.
I’ve been retired 20 years. During that time the Market shocks have been...Tech Bubble...Fed raising rates....Fed lowering rates....sub prime mortgage crisis..etc.

I too lost half of my investment portfolio value but was not in retirement yet. The following ten years have been difficult being self employed and a homeowner in the US. I too stuck it out and have seen a nice rebound since. However I couldn't continue to invest as I could prior to the recession and haven't been able to accumulate as much as I had hoped as I near retirement. Trying to stick it out a while longer as much as I can. Glad I didn't panic and sell! I wonder where it was that you traveled in the motor home?

If you want to live here on a temporary visa or a permanent visa you have to show the Mexican government you have anywhere between $1400 a month to $1700 a month each person.
But if you come down with the tourist visa you do not have to show the Mexican government any income so you can Live here six months a year then go back and renew you're tourist visa for another six months this is how people are LIVING on $600 a month.

Thank you so very much for your response. I’m very much appreciate it. I have seriously been considering this for quite some time. I was told by a traveler I met that is an American’s income is under approximately $95,000.00 per year no taxes would be owed. He very well may have been incorrect. However I do still have many questions about cost of living in Mexico. I highly doubt however that I would choose to own a car in Mexico. From what I understand public transportation is relatively inexpensive. I am so extremely grateful for your input. As Jerry Brown Travels what can you tell me about the cost of long time rentals and short time rentals? The utilities that are included in the cost of the rent and what is not included? I’ve looked at some on line that were $500.00 to $600.00 per month, furnished. At that rate of rent generally are more utilities included? I hope you can help me.

Ok Jerry , so you lost half your portfolio, 10 YEARS AGO. You left it alone and it rebounded greatly as millions of portfolios have. Sad useless story pal...you are still a millionaire, right? What was the point of including that story? Clickbait? Telling people that they can live well on 600/month is disingenuous at best. I've been to the Ajijic and Chapala areas, I know.

Do you feel better? Other than come to criticize someone you obviously don't like, you added nothing of value.

@@mtradz I already commented below on what I got out of it. Sometimes if you have nothing positive to add to a free video that you choose to watch, its best to just not say anything.
