This is exactly what I was looking for as a new Corn grower wanting to use his own Seed. I purchased 2 Packets of Commercial Seed just to start myself off this year...a packet of 10 Seeds cost about US $3 !!!!!!!!! From my calculation looking at your ever filling carton you will be a millionairess in no time !!!!
Although I was raised on a farm, my parents never saved the kernels of sweet corn for planting the next year. So, when growing season ended last year - 2021, I left one cob of corn on the corn stalk and kept an eye on it. When it dried out, I plucked it off the stock and brought it into the house. This was more of an experiment for me. It is the end of February 2022, and will be starting the seeds inside first before planting in May. The big test, will my experiment work or will not one sweet corn plant come up. We shall see.
I'm a fairly new gardener and we're having our first good corn crop this year. I just bought some bulk sweet corn seeds from the co-op, and I'll be saving those for the future in a nice ziplock bag. Before genetic corn my grandpa always saved part of his harvest for next year's seed.
Just finished taking the kernels off of the cob from my small patch (4'x6') of Painted Mountain corn. I now have 3/4 pound of seed corn for next year. I plan to "go big" for next planting, and I think I have plenty. I'm on the western edge of "Basin and Range" country. I plan to start the seeds indoors on May 1st with the idea of transplanting them towards the last week in May. We have rabbits and ground squirrels, so what seems to work (a rabbit fence helps but doesn't solve the problem) is to transplant them and grow them under cover until they are about a foot tall. Then I can remove the cover as the plants are less attractive to the little b@stards.
Thanks for the tip. I bought 2 small packets corn seed today at the garden centre which cost almost €10. I will use this method at the end of the season and hopefully won't have to buy corn seed for quite some time.
Saving seeds is almost a lost art so it is great you posted a video on this. Are you familiar with the Seed Savers Exchange located near Decorah, Iowa? They do wonderful work in preserving heirloom seeds and educating the public on seed saving. It's a beautiful place to visit and they have a great gift shop where you can buy all kinds of seeds and beans. Thanks for your interesting and fun videos.
I’m Australian and have just recently had my best ever corn harvest. Too much to eat before it goes dry. Thanks for your suggestions here. Hopefully I can dry some of my cobs out now and be ready for next season.
Thankyou so much for this amazing tip!! i've had two cobs in my kitchen since last season and had no idea how to get the kernels off! you just saved me so much stress, thankyou so much!
this is super helpful. I have quite a few ears of corn and saving my own seed should help me grow stronger corn in my area and i can share the extra seed with the local nursery. Cause we bought the plants from her green house and i know it will save her money.
@@FlannelAcres its how i got a lot of the things i grow. Someone gave me a plant or some seeds. How i am able to grow cotton. Cause a neighbor got me some seeds.
A lot of crops at grocery stores are GMO crops, and won’t bear seeds that sprout. Make sure you buy seeds that will give you crops you can seed save from
If there is other corn pollen close by it might result in a new unwanted variety. Corn pollen is not likely carried in the air more than several hundred feet.
Thank you for showing me how to dry kernels of corn...so simple! You mentioned there is a special way to dry tomato seeds. I am really interested in seeing that video, but did not find one. Would you please explain how to do that? Thank you so much! Enjoy your day!
Excellent video. How easy was that? We are embarking on a self-sufficient lifestyle, so this will be the first time I’ll be planting corn. I was wondering if the dried corn can be ground into flour, or if there’s a specific type more suited to grinding. Thanks.
Thank you for that. I’ll have to do more research. My sweetcorn was destroyed in the heavy cyclone we experienced, so, I didn’t even have a chance to try out anything. @@Chris-qg8ss
Thank you for this video. I will try growing corn in a tropical country this year to feed my family. I bought sweet corn and decided to save a cob or two for drying. Could I grow corn from a fresh cob?
I am not sure if you can grow it from a fresh cob. I think the fresh corn would rot instead of sprout. I'm glad you are trying the dried corn, and I hope it does very well!
Random first time viewer, do you have a video on growing cien from the seeds you saved. If so can you reply with the link. Im very interested, my wife told me off for taking my corn off too late. First time gardener mistakes and i get ridiculed.
Hello! I don't think I have the actual planting in a video. I usually plant 2-3 seeds every 12 inches, with 2-3 feet between each row. When the sprouts are a couple inches tall, go through and pull the smallest/weakest ones so that you're left with one plant every 12 inches. Corn plans do really well when the soil is fertilized with composted manure. :-)
Please did you soak it in the water before drying it or after hanging it to dry out can i just gets the dried seeds and plant without soaking them in water
Is it ohk to pick the cobs before they turn hard on the plant? In other words, I picked a corn that has turned nice and yellow already from the plant, but I noticed some pests are startging to hang out on the leaves, so I opted to pick it (albeit it it not dry and hard yet) and will try to dry it out now in the hope that the seeds will be viable for next season, or must I wait for the cobs to turn completly dry on the plant first? Or at which stage do you pick them when before dryin them out?

MrEsco206 That's a tricky one. I've never tried drying canned corn. You may be able to dry it in a dehydrator or low heat oven, and pack them in an airtight container. Then rehydrate a few at a time as you are fishing. I'm assuming you're using the corn as bait...?
