  • Silent Night
Music: Franz Grüber; Text: Joseph Mohr
    trans. John F. Young
    Arrangement: Mack Wilberg
In 2003, Pete and Judy Duelo of Minneapolis lost their son Nick in a tragic car accident. Nick was a senior at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and had been an enthusiastic participant in the choral program there, so his family decided to honor his memory by commissioning a new arrangement of a choral piece. Mack Wilberg was chosen for the commission, and his crystalline arrangement of “Silent Night” was premiered at the 2006 “Christmas at Luther” concert.
The shimmering orchestration and hushed choral writing touched the audience deeply during the candle-lit performance. Wilberg had already programmed this arrangement of “Silent Night” for The Tabernacle Choir’s Christmas Concert when, just a month before the concert (and quite by coincidence), he almost literally bumped into the Duelos at a choir convention in Minneapolis. It was the first time they had met in person, and the chance encounter prompted Wilberg to invite the Duelos to Salt Lake City to hear the work they commissioned in their son’s memory performed by The Tabernacle Choir-an invitation they gladly accepted. As the Duelos had hoped, this beautiful arrangement of “Silent Night” will now continue to reach and touch millions around the world.

Just beautiful. Thankful my dad introduced us to them when we were young children. I watch them every Sunday on the BYU station. Merry Christmas. 🎄

I got to perform this piece several times during my years of Tabernacle Choir service. I remember struggling to keep my eyes dry every time. There was something so sublime and pure about this arrangement that never ceased to touch me deeply. I feel like this is the “true rendition” of this beloved classic.

I couldn't agree more. The harmonies are a luring and true "lull-aby." It's an exquisite arrangement...

WOW! To have such talent as you and sing with this choir is such a blessing! Well done, dear! I was first attracted to this video by the xylophone’s constancy tapping, as if a message was being sent by Morse code throughput the universe announcing the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Thank you for sharing…merry Christmas.

오 고요한 밤, 거룩한 밤, 영원히 잊을 수 없는 찬란한 밤에 그가 오셨다. 그를 맞이하는 잔잔한 음악이 나의 영혼을 울립니다.
