You not reviewing 1899 ?
Jeremy you seen the BBC Documentary on Russia The Trauma Zone. That's worth your time
Have you seen stutz?? Would love to know what you thought about it..

Ralph Fiennes is perfect casting, he has the ability to be genteel and suave while also being intimidating and in control, but the reason this is my favorite performance of the year so far is the handful of moments he shows of heartbreaking vulnerability.
He's like one of my favorite actors.
The burger moment is so great
@cinemagicmyGordon Ramsay wishes he was Ralph Fiennes in this
That’s why he was Voldemort 😄
Plus he's hilarious. I liked him in 'In Bruges'
This movie was original and was an absolute joy to watch. If you are seeing it, go in knowing as little as possible.
Wish I could experience it blind. I felt like one of the trailers showed off a bit too much but I still haven’t seen the film yet so I’m not sure.
Does knowing that the "menu" isn't what would conventionally be "perceived as food" count as "knowing as little as possible"? Because if it does, then I might give it a try, but if it doesn't and it's all that there is to it in the grand scheme of things, then i guess am not as interested.
@@THEBUZZMAN100 I thought that too. Trust me, it doesn’t.

@@JD-jz5gu hmmm, I see.... guess I'll give it a go then.
I love how Anya Taylor-Joy's character acts like an audience point of view as if we're inside her head being open minded about what's going on. It's a great way to tell exposition of the story
And she's been very busy this year, a lot of movies with her
@@SQOUREE she kind of came out of nowhere as a breakout star last year and now everyone loves her!
@@BrendanJSmith what? she's been in the industry for quite a long time, i know her since the witch in 2015 and split, after that her career got a boost and started to get more roles, so i don't get your point
@@SQOUREE yeah I remember her from The Witch and Split too, but it just feels like she really blew up in popularity in 2020/2021. Like now she's a Hollywood name that most people will know and before 2020 she wasn't really.
@@BrendanJSmith Because of the Netflix show, Queen Gambit made her more popular
One of the parts that made me chuckle in the movie is deffo the hamburger presentation. All of Slovik’s dishes have like a list of ingredients displayed while the burger simply says “just a well made hamburger”.
Tyler's bullshit
And served on a paper plate. Awesome.
I do love how Ralph Fiennes’s intimidation factor doesn’t come from loud, angry tirades, but from calm confidence.
Same
like a million other movie villains that came before him? people who like this need to watch more films...ones made before 2000
@@tbewin1z143 you need to not put other people down for liking what they like
@@tbewin1z143 I never said he was the first villain to have calm confidence. Calm down bro 😂
I think it’s also partly acceptance of his own mistakes and shortcomings
This movie knew how to use comedy to ADD to the tension, rather than take away from it. That is very rare in cinema right now, I'm glad you gave the movie a shout out for doing so.
Just finished watching it and the use of comedy felt like how we saw on Succession. Then I see the credits role and there I see it - Directed by Mark Mylod, Produced by Adam McKay.
Parasite. That movie changed tone and genres so fast and completely messes with your head. Also, has a great trailer that doesn't give anything away.
I
Try to tell everyone about that movie but i feel like itll be hyped again for the new people
Damn that movie gave me whiplash. Things change SO fast!
I came out of the movie making that same connection. Similar to Parasite in a sense

I did really enjoy the 4th wall break where Ralph character calls out the most unbelievable part of the movie nobody actually tried to escape as crazy stuff started to go down
I thought that too. I mean they had 3 dudes at the door but they were out numbered. I would have grabbed a knife and went that way. Going through the kitchen was just suicide.

'The Menu' was the first movie my fiancee and I saw in theatres in about 3 years! It felt so good to be back and the movie was perfect for returning to the cinema. We had a great time, the movie was excellent. It was a great blend of tension and comedy. As you mentioned, comedy is never used to break tension, and in some cases it adds to the tension. They did an excellent job interweaving the core concept of the restaurant and dining experience with the film.
Highly recommend this movie. It's just a well written and filmed experience with great talent and an interesting premise.

I now need a movie with Christian Bale, Ralph Fiennes and Daniel Day Lewis.
Yep
Daniel day Lewis retired from my understanding bucko
Just saw it few hours ago, this is easily one of my favourite movies of the year and one of the most fun experience I had at the theater. Sadly there were only 3 people in the theater myself included which is sad for a movie like this that deserves a lot of support especially that this is based on an original script that's absolutely creative
It’ll get trendy as the weeks come by watch. Just like Barbarian and Terrifier 2.
Don't you hate it when you see people complaining about movies today being "remakes, sequels, superheroes and woke" and when movies like THIS shows up, those people don't support it?
@@ThePrinceofHisOwnKingdom I mean it depends on why people don't support it. There wasn't really a big marketing for this movie, so I really can't blame for people who didn't know that this is gonna come out (this is coming from a studio who made a bunch of Oscar baity movies) Yes it has three A list actors that most people love especially Anya and Fiennes but of course people see the movie for the plot and sometimes it's hard to market an original story by hiding a lot of surprises in it.
I've been truly enjoying the empty theater screenings, while being hopeful that my faves are being streamed by those that prefer to stay home. ☺️
My Theater is Sydney was about half full but it was the first showing for this movie. Everyone was laughing throughout though, “Tyler’s bullshit” was the best part
In relation to the “f” bombs - a lot of their chat was unscripted, to feel natural between the actors at a dinner setting. So probably just how these actors must talk naturally 😂
Sounds just like Succession, which is also directed by Mark Mylod.
Even though I knew the basic plot, Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" had a similar effect when I finally saw it: you get so caught up in the plot about a woman stealing from her boss and going on the run that when she shows up at the Bates Motel, the shift in tone is still surprising.
A more recent example is Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite": starts out as a pretty mellow character dramedy, then once we follow the characters down into the mansion's hidden basement it's as if we're running straight into a horror/thriller.
I still think to this day the biggest and best "holy shit, this movie took a turn" moment is From Dusk Til Dawn. I introduced an old girlfriend to it a couple of years ago, who had never heard of it, and her reaction to when it all hits the fan had me in tears laughing.
Love that film but god damn the Tarintino half is so pervy and just doesn’t mesh well with how fun and crazy the Rodriguez half is. Solid film though and totally awesome turn.
Another great turn in a flick: "No One Lives".
@@LyfaLeeZhure_DavidShawn will have to give it a watch, never heard of it 🤙
@@MusakFerrous like how
@@ConnorMcCartney95 tarintino’s character has a whole foot fetish scene with a teenage girl and if my memory serves he imagines r*ing her while she’s tied up. Like I understand they’re supposed to be bad guys but jjeeeeeeezzzus.
Loved it. Having worked in restaurants for over 10 years, I learned to swear so much I never noticed it until you said it and even then I can’t remember them swearing so much. I remember one or two lines.
Ralph Fiennes is so great he can go from The English Patient, great guy to In Bruge, mob boss with a code. He can play anything
The most funniest thing is the Tyler's bullsh*t is exquisitely comedic gold 🤣
Got to see this movie last night and I loved it. The comedy was absolutely perfectly placed, the story and execution was so original, and I felt like the message came across clear without them spoonfeeding it. There was a lot of trusting the audience to be smart enough to connect dots and I loved that. Perfect amount of ambiguity, stellar filming and editing, and fantastic performances from everyone involved. Loved it
I watched it but still couldn't get few points...why burger? And why she left alone??
@@STargaryanThe chef used to be a burger cook in his youth, as seen when Anya Taylor entered his room. She used that to “peel his skin off” and remind him of what he used to be, someone who put actual love into his crafts instead of obsession. At least that’s how I interpret it
@@STargaryan totally agree with what @rhetiq said. My husband also pointed out that the chef probably let her go because she proved that she was someone who could give (she gave him a little bit of the joy he used to have around cooking) instead of being a taker like everyone else. He didn't really want her to die because he didn't think she had earned it but was sticking to it until she changed his mind :) that's my take on it, anyway
funniest part was when the chef explained why john leguizamos character had to die, he had to get reaped just because the chef felt like one of his day off was wasted for watching his movie, ultimate petty move 🤣
@@STargaryan In addition to what other had said, I also want to said that Anya probably isn't suppose to be "there" at the first place. It was Tyler's ex who was suppose to be "there." So throughout the film, the chef is constantly "testing" Anya, see if she worth to be escape!
That whole "u cc'd me on the email" thing/scene was a great way of injecting humor into a film without messing with the tone or atmosphere of the film.
As much as i love a certain movie franchise, thats sth they could do well to learn from.
One of the movies of 2022 that was a genuine surprise as to how much I actually enjoyed it. I loved when ATJ seemingly reinvigorated Julian’s love of cooking by asking for one of the simplest dishes ever…not to mention where Julian made his start
It was a great winning move for her ❤
The ending was literally reminiscent to the ending of Midsommar. Even the final score was very similar. That was my biggest gripe.
What I find funny is how Colin Stetson was the composer for Hereditary too lol.
Yes immediately thought of that final scene in midsommar. Very weird as a viewer to tie the 2 movies together lol
Omg same
That ending style is fairly common, I wouldn’t correlate it instantly to Midsommer, ready or not has an extremely similar ending as well, is essentially it’s own genre at this point
So refreshing to see lead characters who have depth and who can portray both strength and vulnerability in a way that moves in tandem with the plot.
Literally just got home from the theater. Absolutely loved it! Great thriller with dashes of dark comedy sprinkled in. For me personally, Top 3 movie I’ve seen this year

A movie (with very similar themes) that became more thrilling than expected was Parasite.
I especially loved the scene with Fiennes hyping up Hoult. Reminded me of the scene with Fiennes and Alden Ehrenreich.
The ONLY problem I had, and which broke my immersion just a little, was the motivation to include the movie star and his secretary. That was a little weak. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Worth seeing in the theatre just for Ralph Fiennes clapping his hands.
I got a good laugh out of the chef telling the assistant she was going to die
That wasn't the real motivation though. The actor was basically a Phoney liar and a leech. Basically whatever he admitted to the assistant and other stuff he told her was the real reason. The chef imo simply wanted to mess with him like the actor said he would pretend that he liked the different cousines (when pitching the show).
The assistant stuff was more difficult but admitted theft and also implied criminal stuff because she didn't have student loans.
My takeaway was that the chef despised the movie star because they mirrored each other's careers. That being starting happy from humble beginnings then gradually lost themselves in their success until in the end only doing what they were good at because they were successful and not because they enjoyed it.
Chef cooking exquisite but pretentious food while the movie star stars in cookie cutter block busters.
Everything broke immersion in this movie. Simply having chef give guest some sort of sedative to explain why they all went along with it.
Yes! Exactly, his response to the assistant was funnier and deeper than the reason the actor was there. Still great though!
I watched this movie as part of secret premiere so I didn't even know what I would be watching. So I was quite suprised and my experience was similiar with Jeremy. I was looking forward to this review. Also feels weird that I saw a movie before Jeremy.
Agree and loved the tension that wasn't interrupted with funny moments. Lots of great twists. Felt that we got to know enough of our antagonist's point of view to make him sympathetic but still think he's crazy. It's a tiny point but the price point for the experience shouldn't have been $1250 per guest. That's close to what you are looking at for a night with wine at Le Bernadin or Le Grenouille. To have a private island with all of these employees living on-site would cost significantly more. I'm an average person and many average people end up at restaurants with this price point for bdays and anniversaries. The price point should have been like $5k.
You're definitely not average if you're at restaurants that cost 1250 bucks per person for anything. I don't even think I've seen a restaurant that costs that much let alone been inside one. Nor have I ever met anyone that would've been in one. I mean 5k per person is fine as well but yeah 1250 is plenty lmao
I have eaten at very nice places, and served at very nice places. Hitting $1250 a person is something only the very wealthy do, and it usually involves some nice bottles of wine in order to jack up the bill that much.
You can eat extremely well for an anniversary and still struggle to break $300. Total. After tip. Of 30%.
$1250?
I’m not saying you can’t accomplish it with ease with the right wine menu, but you’re not an average person dropping $2500 between 2 people on a single night out.
Remember again that the restaurant was on a private island. So the guests at such a place aren't paying for the meal alone. The people who work at the restaurant also live there. This is a fictional story and we shouldn't pick it apart too much but with so few guests it doesn't seem likely that they could make a profit based on this price point.
Tickled. A documentary about the professional tickle scene. An absolutely bonkers premise that makes you think its going to be all laughs and then you fall down the rabbit hole. I've never seen a documentary turn into a thriller but damn that movie was an experience.
David Farrier (the guy who made Tickled) has a new one out called Mr. Organ. Absolutely go see it when and if it becomes available in your area (it just opened in New Zealand and it's a Kiwi film). There's nothing more horrifying than real people.
This is by far one of the best movies of the year. I hope it gets nominated for an Oscar for editing and Ralph Fiennes performance, but knowing how the Oscar’s treats horror I don’t think it will. Also any movie with Anya Taylor-Joy makes it better.
Thia movie needs to be a big hit for Ralph fiennes to have a fair chance at a nomination. Mia goth in pearl was also 1 of the best leading performances I have seen all year around. The Oscars can be so damn unfair and exclusive at times, especially after hearing the mixed reviews from Empire of light and babylon which are obvious Oscar bait films. I would much rather see far more of glass onion, the menu, EEATO and Guillermo del Toro's pinnochio in theaters which are TRULY cinematic on EVERY LEVEL!
That thing you said about too many f bombs is exactly how I felt about the dialogue in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, it just felt so forced and unnatural, however I didn't notice it at all that much in The Menu.
This movie was incredible! I honestly did not expect it to be. I had no clue what I was getting myself into but I loved it.
The only movie I was anticipating this year, and it did not disappoint. I'm ready to watch it a couple more times before accurately placing it in my favorites of the last decade.

The first time I watched the movie Rebecca (1940), I was flipping channels on my TV when I came across it on TCM. It was a part in the beginning where the main character meets this charming rich guy and they fall in love.
I honestly thought it was an old romantic comedy until they got to the guy's mansion and I eventually realized it was a mystery drama about a woman trying to find out what happened to her husband's previous wife.
Red eye! I went into watching it thinking it was a romance!! Nope I was dead wrong but loved it so much more!
As a fan of that movie it makes me happy that you experienced that! I always wondered if anyone that didn't see the trailer assumed it was a romance at first.
After seeing the trailer I've been more excited for this movie than I have for a movie in a long time. I'm so glad it got your stamp of approval

Devil's Advocate was one that I didn't know was a thriller going into it. I thought it was just like a lawyer movie then people's faces start turning into demons and I definitely got freaked out.
I didn't planned it (ok, maybe a little bit), but I watched 'The Menu' twice and second time was even more fun. And I took a lesson from Slowik's character - never stop enjoying what you love doing. I love watching movies, I enjoy learning about movies and making of as much as I can for my own entertainment. But movies and cinema never cease to amaze me. I'm 36 and I'm still like a kid watching magic trick. And 'The Menu' was one hell of a trick!
This was like watching a cutting-edge play in NYC... off-Broadway. I loved it
Both Nicholas Hoult and Anya Taylor-Joy's eye acting is incredible in this movie. They sell so much, even their improvised lines, it's honestly super impressive.

I haven’t seen a single word of advertising for this movie? A thriller with Anya and Ralph? Of course I’m going to watch this
Thanks for recommending this movie. Amidst all the big CGI explosions and nine-figure budgets that dominate the multiplexes, it was really nice to see a movie in a theater that's actually a showcase for actors and performances. I'm glad I got to see this one. (And I'm glad I got to see it without extensive spoilers, so I'm shutting up now.)

Sounds a little like the dark comedy Hotel Splendide (2000). The giant cake the rogue chef's construct near the end is, well, quite a piece of work. Loved Fiennes in The Grand Budapest Hotel, looks like he's in charge again.
As a thriller lover it was one of those ones where I couldn't stop smiling the entire time because they were doing it so well. I definitely agree with your take on the beginning, and honestly the very end was the only other part that felt slightly questionable but Fiennes & Taylor Joy truly did wonderfully. Every time they opened their mouths I was excited and pulled in.
If you can find it in the US, you gotta check out Boiling Point. Set in a restaurant, it is very tense. The Menu might get plaudits but BP has great acting and was made in one shot. It’s great.
