    adding special decay as a hp substitute for invincible specials would be a pretty cool addition that still feels realistic, considering how others specials already have similar mechanics like zipcaster or bubbler and tacticooler when they are on top of tower

      agreed. It should have a min. duration of like 2~ ish seconds and a max. of 7 seconds, and every 100(?) damage dealt, the duration is lowered by 1 second

      The healthy thing would be to make it decay faster while holding a super clam or riding tower, while also buffing the weaker slay specials (Inkjet, Ultra Stamp)
      It'd be nice.

    If they nerfed it in certain modes I’ll be fine. Like once you get your special for kraken in clam blitz and you have the clam it’s basically a goal. For tower control you basically get the whole tower for free.

      Drop the ball when you pop special for kraken, no super jump to kraken, more knockback. Special becomes fine imo

    Kraken needs some counterplay beyond avoiding it because it honestly really doesn't have anything. It feels like "fighting" a Sting Ray but instead of being able to mind your own business and watch the laser you have to actively hide from the laser. And also the laser doesn't have to back off a bit wasting some time at the start and end. And also the laser can push objectives better. I like the duration nerf at high damage levels idea from a practical perspective, but I still think the special is just not fun or engaging to fight.

      Agreed, Squid School is a great learning resource, but Gem can be really annoying with his be all end all "I'm objectively right" attitude sometimes, I'm sure a kraken is easier to deal with in a 4 person team on VC, but most people are playing solo queue and don't have that luxury. A 'problem solving mindset' only takes you so far when the solution to that problem requires coordination from strangers you can't talk to. I'm glad Chara is more open-minded and takes more perspectives into account than just "professional 4 person team".

      @@johndelanie3649 Squid School is adressing people using it as a competitive excuse which you can not do in that enviornment, his prespective in terms of helping newer comp players is important. Its harsh but its accurate. My video is about the design impacting the game and his post is about how comp players need to think about Kraken. Both are true.
      Idk if I like the ray comparison, a global range special will almost always be significantly worse.

      Maybe they could make it so there’s penalties when interacting with the objective like
      Tower Control: When on tower, kraken duration decreases
      Clam Blitz: Power clam is dropped when kraken is used (or maybe duration decreased with a power clam?)

    Kraken right now is sort of like the bandaid for the current design of the maps/meta. It's a problem but for now it probably something that needed until the devs reevaluate the current balance of everything

      The devs have been "evaluating" since launch, crab is no less of a problem than it was before, the other specials didn't get any meaningful buffs apart from tri-strike, and now kraken is in the game and has even less counterplay than crab. Adding in another overtuned special doesn't fix the horrible state of the meta, it just adds another problem that needs juggling along with the rest.

    i just feel like the main counterplay to kraken in the first game was taming it with knockback but now since the charge hold is basically immune to that you can’t really push it back at all

    If it has to be nerfed, I think it would be cool if it was something like shortening your Kraken active time for each surge attack you use.
    It could result in some interesting strategic choices for the Kraken user for how to approach the enemy team, and make for some neat counterplay, like baiting the user into a surge attack to end the special sooner

      I mean kraken already has a 9-7 second duration but you also have to count for the initial start up vulnerability and after. Doing a charge drain basically makes the special unusable and useless. I mean like you’re already locked in the direction you charge in and you also have lag time once the special is done.

    Kraken just highlights how some specials just are less powerful. It just outclasses reefslider and ultra stamp and makes inkjet look like a weapon mode (like with squeezer of flingza) rather than a special

    Kraken, instead of being knocked back by shots, should get some kind of disrupter/ mist effect while being fired at. The effect would not be too bad if one person is firing at you however, it should increase as more people shoot at you. This would mean you put yourself at more risk when charging more players while still getting most of the original benefits.

    I think I wanna see more non-shooter Kraken weapons. And more non-shooter weapons in general I just on principle refuse to use shooters, with the caveat that dualies do not count as shooters, if anyone counts dualies as shooters, which does seem a little reasonable.

      I don't have a hatred towards shooters like most players these days seem to have, but since most of the shooter weapons already have second kits I imagine the future seasons will have more new non-shooter weapon kits.
      Hopefully, those new kits will actually be good and have some synergy with the main weapon, which is why I not a fan of many weapons ingame currently (and why I only really use bith Jr.'s and Heavy Splatling) since a lot of weapon kits don't work well with the main weapon.

    I've been cooking up some theoretical patch notes considering sub and special balance, so I guess I'll post an except for kraken here :)
    *Kraken*
    Bombs now explode on contact instead of being killed. Duration expends 66% faster while on tower. Drops clams on activation (already cannot pick up clams). When cut short by picking up the rainmaker, speed is set to base walking speed. Can now super jump while in kraken form.
    Takes increased knockback from:
    main weapons (case by case, mostly slow non-shooters), subs (when applicable), ultra stamp (Can deflect rush mode), reef slider, booyah bomb, trizooka, killer wail, kraken squidrolls, ink vac shots, and triple inkstrike. After making this list carefully, I realize it's basically everything but I wanted to put a focus on high burst damage over consistent low damage options.

    Here me out all they have to do is revert Kraken back to splatoon one size and knock back, while charging it s charge mode which will take 5%-10% more knock back than usual an. This will make it perfect in my eyes making it more strategic instead of a panic (woh woh woh woh da dedonth) Kraken noises.

    Honestly I think extreme Tower knockback would be an addition to the fun factor, like imagine you get hit with a Booyah Bomb and/or three Tri-Strikes but instead of just sitting there you go flying an absurd (but non-lethall) distance away. That'd be funny to witness without detracting too much from the user's fun.

    This is why I like this channel, I've been saying the same thing a lot lately; "Kraken fixes more problems than it causes". Could all those problems have been fixed a different way? Sure, but we've already seen the devs aren't interested in taking requests, and at least this adds fun to the game, I'd become a salmon run only player in the chill season so this is a resounding win for me.

      1. Make it so it cannot carry anything (Clam, Power clam and Rainmaker)

      That's it, everything else about its invincibility is not that hard to work around

    If they made it so the charged surge attack automatically fired upon charging instead of being able to hold it, it would prevent people from using it to glue themselves in place. Combine that with increased knockback on tower and dropping clams at end of special (if Reefslider drops clams after launch then Kraken should, too) then they could increase the movement speed a little and give it features like super-jumping back without throwing off the balance.

    from what I've seen from kraken gameplay, I think dash attack is used way too often. it's use condition (cooldown/ charge time/ damage?) should be nerfed so it isn't spammed and bring back variety to kraken use

    I think there needs to be 3 changes to kraken.
    1. no more objective cheese. It’s just unfun for solo queue, when kraken just gets to claim the objective for free. Kraken just should not be able to interact with objectives period. Tower control is murder in solo queue right now because so much of it is just roller and 96 claiming the tower and sitting on it for the entire duration.
    2. Charge needs either longer startup or longer endlag. Currently the charge is way too spammable, and it feels like it totally negated the point of knockback to begin with. Make it so charge is something that actually has to be a decision.
    3. Knockback needs to be increased for non shooter weapons. The last thing this game’s meta needs is a dominant special that is best fought by close range shooters. Just put everyone in the same playing field when it comes to knockback.
    I think a breakthrough special being good is healthy for the game, but I really hate the current state kraken is in. Granted I say this as the one person who did not want kraken to come back because I despised the invincibility specials in splatoon 1.

      I like Kraken as it is now since the bad chokepoints were a real pain to deal with but you make a very good point. I'd hate to see the return of a shooter meta. I think it'd be real healthy for the game if Kraken was allowed to contest the tower but not be able to push it by itself as to still have it counter specials like a GG Booyah Bomb without it getting free points. Clam Blitz however needs to have the superjump cheese strat nerfed overall, maybe making the jumper drop their clams upon landing instead of having it at the ready could help?

    I'm definitely in the Kraken enjoyer camp, it just fits really well with my playstyle, but I do think gutting Kraken taming this bad was a major oversight. The charge feels designed specifically around having knockback immunity and being able to push through with good timing, but given both how fast the charge is and how incredibly low the knockback of even most specials are, I feel like there should definitely be a majorknockback increase for most slower weapons (Brellas, blasters, rollers) and specifically specials. This way you can at least keep the Kraken off you until the duration runs out and more specials block Kraken, which would be an even trade. Specifically, giving Tacticooler a knockback bonus (somehow) or making Vac completely block it would make a triangle meta for specials which has worked very well in the past

    I don't mind kraken. It's a fun different special for me to go up against since I never played splatoon 1. Honestly when I see kraken I see it as a test of my movement and understanding where and what I can do even against back into the corner

    I think a reasonable kraken nerf would be slower charge if it's under fire. Not to an insane degree, but I think it'd help with the idea of kraken taming. Like taking a hit during kraken converts the damage into a short stacking duration of time where the speed at which you charge the ZR attack is slowed by about half.

    I've had an idea for missles in terms of giving it more options sooo Imma just spill some thoughts.
    Targeting 4 players would be like normal missles, but instead of 2 - 3 missles a player it would be like mini soda bottles you would see at like theme parks. They would act like level 2 charge fizzy bombs in which they would 40 damage and then 50 damage as they did the 2 bursts.
    3 targets would be like normal missles ish but each missle doing 50 max, and there's only 8 missles total for the 3 players.
    2 targets would launch four 2 liter bottles (2 per player) that would make a sorta mini inkstorm, but with a small startup as the bottles land on the ground, get a mint added, and have the soda spritz out like a fountain whixh has a small aoe
    1 target would be like this huge party sized bottle, being about the size of a Tacticooler. Thing is it's much slower to land and can be destroyed if damaged enough. This behemoth would do like 200 dmg max and have a mid sized aoe.

    I think tbh I'm more fine with current state Kraken than current state Reefslider and Stamp. I'd PREFER them look at those two before touching and adjusting Kraken, I want more fun selfish special options that FUNCTION over toning back one of the most chaotic and fun specials in the game.

    ive thought abt kraken having a recall effect like zip or jet to stop it from having cheese in cb, making it so teammates jump to your starting position. if they made the endlag into like a superjump back to your starting spot i think it could decently deal with the cheese problem while also giving the special some new interactions (like it could do ball jumps in cb only if you use it after youre already in, like zip)

    They should definitely make it so the tower doesn't move with kraken on it. Other transformation/hp specials can't stay on the tower and either can't attack while invincible or aren't invincible while attacking. TF2 did this really well with how objectives can't be capped with an ubercharge, requiring the Uber duo to clear the objective so teammates can get in and cap the objective

    Kinda crazy that kraken and inkjet are in the same game. I’ve always thought inkjet should just activate when jump is held instead of forcing you to fly in kid form. Would improve the special a lot.

    i really like the whole, decaying the duration when taking hp damage, cause like-- crab would do 32 per shot, and would take like-- at minimum several seconds to really actually start harming it's actual duration (and if it had a negative multiplier, which frankly it really should, then it'd actually take a *while* and could only really end a kraken with team help), while tristrike being sent at the tower while it's there would take away like, 7 seconds or smthn (heck-- they could use this as a time to shadow buff slower firing weapons with good aoe / range so that they can safely chip at kraken to help their team if need be)

    I think just nerfing it's effectiveness on the tower would work better. Since Kraken is so big maybe if it's on the tower the tower moves to an absolute crawl of like a 1/4 the speed it would normally go, making it very suboptimal to use Kraken on the tower aside from niche situations. Still very useful, but you can't just sit there invincible with it.

    I think the main thing they need to do for Kraken in TC is to make it so that the pole on the tower causes knockback to the Kraken (hell, maybe to Crab too, why not). It's simple, understandable, and doesn't conflict with any other interaction.

    My nerf would be that charge attacks burn some of the special meter, so if you charge everywhere it won’t last nearly as long, forcing you to either settle for a shorter duration or just swim to your target.

    Tbh the only part I disagree on is the booyah bomb thing on tower. Booyah bomb being a win condition on tower control like that and it’s only direct counter before kraken being ink vac has always been dumb imo, that needs more counterplay and I think kraken is fine in that sense. It should take more knockback from other things but that one thing in particular is completely fine imo.

    kraken feels just as amazing to use as it did in 1 but i agree with a lot of the objective cheese complaints lmao
    one really easy idea would be to force the tower to travel at half speed if a kraken's on it. too big
    timer-based hp would be _interesting_ but idk if it'd be healthy for the game. i can only see that creating another "quick! lob all your projectile specials in this direction" situation + it's already insane that tristrike markers STICK to the tower as it's moving
    maybe the solution's somewhere in-between, like if it's hit with an inkstrike/the center of a booyah bomb (smacked by an ultra stamp?) or more importantly if it pops the rainmaker shield then it's forced into the squid form wallstun animation. could even make it twice as vulnerable to knockback in that state
    i definitely want to see the base knockback from all weapons increased though, it's outrageous that charging a dash cancels virtually all of it. as well as _some_ vulnerability to toxic mist/ink vac, but other than that i think it would be in pretty much a perfect spot
    just PLEASE give crab rapid-fire the same effectiveness boost against it. i want the coin pusher strat to be real so badly

    Here’s my take on the possible nerfs/buffs: remove the ability to push tower as kraken (unless a teammate is also on tower) when picking up rainmaker you still have to go through the kraken end lag frames, clam super jump throw delay, and increased knock back (maybe even stun) from specials. For buffs, allow it to super jump, and also allow it to get buffs from swim speed up, ninja squid, and IA at 75% the power per AP. I think increasing knockback all together would ruin the special, since it’s so large and slow it can really flank well nor catch anybody off guard.

    kraken is in such a strange place, it needed the charge dash to actually threaten shooters but now nothing can effectively tame it, it cheeses tower but thats just because its immune to tower booyah bomb cheese which is waaaaay more lame, the hp=time could be good but then crab and tristrike just ruin it without there being a minimum amount of time you get in kraken.
    honestly with wall already stopping it bombs should do scaling amounts of decent knockback while exploding instantly on contact, this will:
    -ensure you will likely have a good counter option that can only invalidate kraken in extreme niche scenarios
    -give a skill based counter to kraken tower cheese
    -super jump shielding now bad though still force it to drop the ball or add a cooldown, same for super jumping in general
    -not fix the rainmaker, that just has to a separate nerf
    -not help sprinkler weapons because the devs clearly hate those weapons since they got sprinkler
    -...point sensor...
    toxic mist should actually have an effect on it too

Understandably it would be slower on tower but kraken wouldn't be able to stop it since jumping into it while tracking would just cause the knockback from the insta-splosion

    I think increasing the knockback is a msut but I could see them making it lose duration faster when on the objective like Big Bubbler! (Also everytime I see someone using this special I get the urge to use it right away again bc it's so fun, I missed using it in 1 and not being able to use it again for so long)

    An important point that I don't hear a lot of people mentioning is as a backline all the fun parts of this special don't apply to me, kraken just means that I don't get play the game for 8 seconds which while it isn't broken it's really annoying

    I just dislike that the only options when defending against a Kraken are to run away or hide which essentially pulls you out of the game. If your team has an Inc Vac it can try to stall but a Kraken can either choose to ignore it or outlast the Vac and kill it anyway. There is 0 effective counterplay and in Splatoon 3 it is the only player controlled special that behaves that way

    Just had a thought: even back in splatoon 1, kraken taming wasn't perfect because faster shooting weapons had a significant advantage over slower weapons, right? And now kraken has the charge attack, which makes it near impossible to stop at all thanks to the knockback resistance. Well, what if those slower weapons were buffed against kraken to specifically break through the knockback resistance? Something where big hits that would normally one-shot can slow down or even redirect the charge slightly, pushing the kraken user to use it more strategically depending on the match up.
    Also on that note, kraken should be able to deal massive knockback to other krakens, maybe even be able to actually reduce its duration too like you mentioned. I'm not sure about it having special decay in general, but against itself at least that sort of thing makes perfect sense

    I feel like a lot of the problem would be tweaking how the knockback works. IMO, being completely immune to being pushed around while charging the attack is the main problem (especially on Tower Control). I feel like limiting the resistance to only while actually attacking would help a lot with the balance. You would still have a way to force your way through things like Hydra and Crab, but players have a little more counterplay, and clicking the right stick on tower isn’t a free 8 seconds of progress.

    I just think they shouldn't have even added Kraken back tbh. Sure, it's fun and all, but both Reefslider and somewhat stamp are hurt by it. Instead, they could have given Reef the ability to steer within reason and give the rider the option to eject themselves forward or backward, sending the Reefslider to blow up in front of you. More fun options for the user, lets the team get in, and would be fun to fight, especially for chargers, who could snipe the player ejecting, since it would take them maybe a second to become actionable again.

    I love how people forget that kraken is still kraken, there is still counter play
    Waiting out the special, playing somthing that can tame it (mainly the splatlings) or just spam vacuum, it cripples it more than any other special

      The kraken itself has counterplay but only when it’s goal is to kill you. There’s really nothing you can do about a kraken on tower or a kraken giving jumps to its team in clams.

    feel like a decent way to nerf it would either be
    A: increase kb the charge attack takes (probably the most likely)
    B: make it so the charge has some hp while charging (something like 125 hp), and when the hp is depleted the range/damage of the charge is decreased and it takes more knockback

    How about the kraken loses duration if it doesn't keep moving? Staying in or near the same spot will cause it to decay at even double the rate? Enforcing its role as a stalemate/choke breaker and heavily tuning down its ability to control certain objectives

    well, my thoughts: new season wiped all enthusiasm for me. we've got no map redesign (this is NOT redesign), no netcode fix, we've got bandaid crab fix, and we've got that "just copy it from spl1 and throw into" special. playing in soloQ now looks like lottery, bc seeing 3 krakens in oppose team in CB is not fun at all.

    While I do think that Kraken needs a nerf I don't mind how it interacts with objectives. So many specials in this game break TC in some way so I don't see a reason to single out Kraken and jumping to the basket for guaranteed minimal value is outweighed by giving up map control which will likely result in a much bigger counter push.

    make killer wail more relevant by increasing knockback to splatoon 1 levels. never played splatoon 1 myself, but it'd be beneficial to see it knock krakens away from objective, making it harder for a kraken to push in. maybe even have inkstorm do it as well, idk. i love Kraken with all my heart. it's so much fun to play it. popping rainmaker or contesting a pop has never been as fun before. ever. but it feels unfair at times when the enemy team just kinda lines up, and i can charge attack them all, lol. all-in-all, i think the special is well designed and has decent depth to it! i don't think Nintendo is gonna make it an HP special, as i kinda think they wanted it to retain the invincibility from splat 1. just some thoughts idrk

      Killer wail is already a good special balance wise. It doesn't need a buff, it's not irrelevant, there are very few weapons that would be held back by having it and those weapons were probably bad already anyways or suffering from other problems in their kit (sploosh).

    the kraken royal is a special that has me conflicted, one of the praises I gave splatoon 3 was its special balance, I always felt no matter what special was being used against me I had options, I can choose to avoid it or fight it if I felt i was in a good position or even more fun playing rock, paper, scissors with the specials as many of them can counter each other. Then comes this thing and I have no option to deal with it at all, I have to run or ill most likely die, not other special can deal with it or push it back at all or inconvenience it. Like we needed a special to push in that'll be effective for a while, but this is too effective imo. Like if it had more knock back during the charge attack I think it'll be better balanced because right now thats the main issue.

    Not sure if it’s too much nerfing, but I think you not be able to hold clams in Kraken, and there should be a property on the tower that pushes the Kraken off. In my OPINION, this removes the two things I find most problematic.

    I think one of the best things to counter Kraken would be buffing Toxic Mist against it... that sub needs buffs, and I think this could be the perfect way to do that. Maybe make Toxic Mist increase the wind-up on the charge and decrease the movement speed of the charge, maybe even cancel it altogether? I think that could really help make up for the lack of effective Kraken Taming in S3, and could really help every Toxic Mist weapon.

      The thing is, this kind of buff doesnt actually make a sub better. Ultra stamp and inkjet weren't made better in the meta because they were buffed against crab. Because that buff didnt fix the core problems with it. As someone who plays multiple toxic mist weapons, and even mains one, toxic mist has core problems with it. And buffing it against kraken wont fix that or make it any better or feel any better to use

    They need to make it so Kraken can carry a power clam period. It is so annoying not being able to fully defend a Kraken with a power clam and with nintendo crapy servers helping them throw the power clam before/ after they die is why I dont play clams no more

    the biggest difference between Missiles and kraken is that you actually NEED to be good with kraken. missiles you can LITERALLY just shoot and do anything else after you released it and before the special gauge build up nerf it was spammed. Im not the best player in spaltoon, barely having time to invest getting better, still relying on inksaver and ink replenish abilities, and even I can literally play torero with unskilled krakens. they never hit me, I dance around them and than spalt them. I can not do that with missiles

    I do think kraken should be more prone to knockback. Make taming it easier, but not drastically enough that it won't be able to push forward at all (asides from other specials). And yes, why can't we super jump with kraken? That was a fun gimmick from S1 that gave you a niche reason to run krak-on roller. Also why don't we make brellas a counter to kraken by making it so it can't pierce through their shields (idk if this is already true or not because who plays brellas?).

    Kraken taming does exist, it's just entirely dependent on elevation, mako marts weird platforms made out of shopping items makes it so krakens charge over shoots the ledge and gives opponents time to move. Also ledges make it that if a kraken can't charge onto higher elevation and can get knocked back. But most of the maps are flat af so it doesn't really come up ever. I don't want kraken nerfed but if they made the dash a 2 shot it wouldn't be too bad since you can just jump after the charge. My problem with kraken is that most of the other aggressive specials are terrible

    The problem with Kraken is as you say it makes solo doable, that's the exact problem, you don't need to be a team player as a kraken user, basically if 4 members are using kraken, they can do whatever they one each by themselves, it's already true in clam blitz.
    This is a team game, so what's the use of being a team player if you can do everything yourself?
    That's the BIGGEST problem
