It definitely shows he was being genuine with his reasons for hating Spider Man; "What's with the mask? What's he trying to hide?". He hated SM because he couldn't trust him, he couldn't trust him because there was no way to hold him accountable for his failures, and there was no way to hold him accountable because of his anonymity. Once JJ had a face and name for the man under the mask; he became the one who could hold him accountable, which meant he could trust him as much as he trusted himself.
Jonah turning into Spider-Man's bro after discovering his identity reminds me of when Lionel Luthor (the main antagonist of "Smallvile" during its first seasons) became Clark's best friend and confidant after discovering his powers, while his son Lex little by little became more and more evil. It was a very fascinating exchange of roles between father and son!
@@quentin1326 He hates Clark for the same reason as the comics. Jealousy. He can't stand not being the most powerful man in the world, and the fact that Superman also had a loving family when Lex had to grow up with the Luthors just made his jealousy and hatred grow out of control. There was also hints at Lex being mentally ill.
jonah was never a bad person, he was just a broken man with anger issues and a misplaced hatred, there are many cases we saw he was a good and even noble man from time to time, broken people does mistakes and even if not all, some mistakes can be redeemed and be forgaved.
Know its been a while since you wrote this, but it reminds me of one of my all time favorite Jameson story arcs. And it wasnt even in a Spider-Man comic. During 'Operation: Zero Tolerance' arc in X-Men, I believe Graydon Creed had been running for President on an anti-mutant platform. A reporter that was investigating Creed and his connection to a major X-men villain called Bastion had mysteriously died. Jameson went on something of a crusade investigating Creed and helped expose his connection to Bastion, the reporters murder, and helped stop Bastions plans to destroy the X-Men and all mutants. It was a great run showcasing Jameson's investigative reporter side and his desire for the truth and his own code of honor.
Jameson: "It turns out my star reporter who I've paid who knows how much money for years was Spider-Man all this time!" 😢 Perry White: "HAHAHAHA! Oh, Jonah. A real editor would know since the beginning when a worker of his has a secret life. For example, if Superman himself was one of my reporters, I would have instantly deduced it. Don't you think, Kent? Cark Kent: "Yeah, Mr White...Sure"
I absolutely love how they went about this. Changing their relationship into a one of mutual annoyance balanced by respect and trust was an absolute masterstroke.
I think the fact it took so long is what made it worth it. Took his own life and Peter's being nearly in shambles, to realize just how fucked a life Peter had, then everything built up from there.
Honestly, I hope they do this in the MCU, not to mention this is not talk more than usual about JJ being like a father figure for Peter Parker/Spider-Man. 😢
The first time Jonah saw Spider-Man unmasked in ASM #12 (1963) he thought it was Peter pretending to be Spider-Man. It helped that Peter caught the flu which made his powers not work right. Even Doc Ock (who unmasked him) didn't think he was the real Spidey.
Jameson demanding his money back for the pictures is funny, but isn’t he wrong about them being fraud? Peter did take those pictures himself, so he should have every right to sell them to the Bugle.
Right? He might’ve omitted that he was Spider-Man himself in those photos, but they all WERE photos of Spider-Man doing his thing on the days that the events reported on took place. And if anyone shouldn’t be talking about Fraud, it’s Jonah, who basically spent a good portion of his career on a smear campaign against Spider-Man, which included fear mongering, embezzlement, and attempted assault and murder. Dude made like 2-3 supervillains because he hated Spidey that much, and he wants to talk about fraud?
I don't think he was speaking literally. It was a frantic and emotional moment and they're only just starting to open up to one another about how they each feel about this new situation. Stands to reason there'd be hurt feelings and venting.
I'm sorry but Jonah is the reason Peter lost his ability to make money as Spiderman in the first place. And when Peter tried to sell his pocs to the Daily Globe for a change, it's Jonah who willingly enticed him to having his position back.
I personally like that before JJ finds out Peter is Spider-Man - He's an angry American but after he finds out - Polite Englishman , Like a Marvel Alfred .
This reminds me of a fan story, can't remember where I saw it, but JJJ always knew Peter was spiderman (or at least figured it out when Pete was an adult) Venom came to him offering spidermans real identity. James told him to f off because while he gives spiderman grief, he does it to make sure Peter stays on the straight and build up his tolerance. He goes to say Venom, Eddie, is a weakling because he could never take the pressure the way Peter can.
I really need to see more of this. I know about the Civil War moment where Jonah Confronts Peter, but compared with this... i just want to see more of Jonah helping Peter after knowing he's Spider-Man
You know. This always screamed at me one more reason Peter never turned on Jonah… he could have caused so many other issues criminal wise and didn’t… the … hope? He had for Jonah might have been the buried chrono memories telling him the man just needed time… I do sorta wanna see a time jump to where Jonah sees himself learning Spider-Man’s identity in Civil War tho during that news conference… That one tho, I suspected is more about lack of respect. Peter COULD have given Jonah the heads up… and didn’t.
Okay, I think this is going to have to be a series I actually pick up and read. Always get paralyzed by how many different iterations of the comics there are, but this is so different from everything else I've consumed that's spider-man related.
JJ has to be a fast thinker, so often his actions would go ahead before thought of them even happened. Its not really a surprise that so many of his actions against Spider-man threatened his life
I hope they do something like this in spider-man 3, since it's the final game and they want to make pete have a happy ending supposedly, this could be one way to achieve that.... A comic adaptation of an actual good thing happening to pete
I hope other incarnations would have Jameson learn Peter’s identity, becoming a semi Spider-Man mythos, at least with if the Jamesons are more caring for Peter or like a uncle figure.
J. Jonah Jameson and Stan Lee do the fusion dance, giving Jonah a much better mustache and adding "Excelsior" to his vocabulary. J. Stan Jamelee: Let's get dangerous, Spider-man.
If I remember correctly; When JJJ goes back in time and meets his younger self, and then outs Peter as Spider-Man to try and put his younger self on the right path, his younger self is seen later writing an expose attempting to tell the world Spider-Man's secret identity. The only reason he didn't was because he was killed by Green Goblin before he could finish it, but not before Goblin saw the expose. I honestly would've loved it if in that comic, current day JJJ and young Peter found out that young JJJ was gonna do that, and the reason why Goblin found out in that timeline.
J.J has been humbled or was always a good man just misunderstood how the world has altered since his youth and then how a young person like Peter has become a masked hero and kept his secret of identity from him. A Goodman is inside Spiderman and J.J is similar to Peter, but he uses the written word as his shield on a level to give himself a bit of leverage of normality. Peter trusts his family to his identity so now J.J is like an adopted father figure or uncle? Of course, things will change and the devil is in the details these years trust isn't everything it is how the truth will continue to be altered in the universe of web?
In one of the later stories in the Ultimate Universe, JJJ is kidnapped by The Chameleon and replaced. Chameleon then kidnaps Peter and ties him up with JJJ. While Chameleon is off playing Spider-criminal, JJJ puts it all together. He realizes that the only reason Chameleon would kidnap and replace Peter over him, is if Peter was someone important. All the pieces fall into place, and JJJ realizes Peter is Spiderman. They don't get much of a chance to talk before Chameleon returns, and shoots JJJ in the head. Thankfully, JJJ survives, and remembers the entire thing. He calls his staff into the hospital and tells them "I know who Spider-Man is. And i'm NOT printing the story. We're going to do everything we can to help and protect him from now on." JJJ even calls Peter into his office. He reveals to Peter he remembers everything, he knows Peter is Spider-Man. He asks if there's anything Peter wants as thanks for everything he does, and all Peter wants is his job back. Flabbargasted, JJJ asks why. "I need to save for college.". "With what you can do, why do you need to go to college?" JJJ asks. "Being spiderman won't pay the bills." Thinking on his answer, JJJ makes a decision. Not only does he give Peter his job back at the Bugle, but he also tells Peter he's going to pay for his college tuition. When JJJ thought Spider-man was just some random dude with no accountability, he thought Spider-Man was a meanace. After all, most people with that power will be, at least in his mind, either selfish, or join a public Super-team. It wasn't until he realized exactly everything Spider-Man had sacrificed that he saw the truth, that Spider-Man is, and was always, a true hero.
Ok if people in the marvel universe are still hating spider man even though he’s been doing this for 15 years and is no longer being harassed by Jonah then WTF?!
JJJ put a lot of time and effort into doing what modern media does; screaming at people that they SHOULD hate Spider Man, and that he can't be trusted. He's conditioned them to look past all the good he's done to look for some sinister ulterior motive until they find some decontextualized piece of nothing based on a misquoted rumor about something that never happened that confirms the preconceived notions he gave them.
How was it fraud? There was public demand for photos of Spider-Man, Jameson wanted the photos, yeah its funny that Spider-Man was just giving selfies of himself but how is it fraud?
I like the JJJ character growth, but they always have to return everting to a status qou, this is why I hate comic there is no progress everyone is stuck on a infinite time loop
I personally like that before JJ finds out Peter is Spider-Man - He's an angry American but after he finds out - Polite Englishman , Like a Marvel Alfred .
I feel like he trusts Peter more than he hates Spiderman.
Was thinking why he does what he does, and boom, you nailed it for me. It's exactly this.

I never watched the whole series, but from what I did watch it seems the only reason Lex "hates" Clark is "I'm a Luthor and Luthors are evil."

out of all the things that happened in the comics, Im surprised it took this long for them to finally get JJ to be buddies with Peter, so wholesome!
I think the fact it took so long is what made it worth it. Took his own life and Peter's being nearly in shambles, to realize just how fucked a life Peter had, then everything built up from there.
Jonah has always been a hardass and a prick, but he’s not a bad person.
He supports mutant civil rights.
JK Simmons is goated as Jonah but.. a British Jonah ain’t bad at all
Hard disagree. He's soft and pliable, like a flip flop worn in a hot shower.
@@SullySadfaceHe spat poetry I don’t agree with but can’t help but admire.
Darin de Paul is excellent too. He doesn't really look like Jonah like Simmons does but he has the much better voice.

more like good uncle :) even if he had uncle ben what was more like father to him than jj
I always think of JJJ as more of an Uncle Figure in Parker's life.
Would be hard as JJ and Peter do have a closer relationship because JJ dad married aunt May
Hate to point this out but Peter's parental figures do not have a good history of surviving in the MCU... 😅
A plot like that would almost satisfyingly end Peters' arc in a stand-alone sense of things before any future installments. Would love it

He isn't. It is his clothes. He didnt have time to properly get dressed into his costume so he seem to have just thrown on the mask.
