Scotland - Rob Roy MacGregor's Grave

  • This one was taken at the grave of Rob Roy MacGregor. We were on a two-day Timberbush Tour into the Highlands. On our way up to Fort William we made this stop at Balquhidder. The man speaking is one of our favorite Timberbush Tours guides, Marty. He is extremely knowledgeable with a very dry sense of humor. Rob Roy is Marty's favorite historical figure and this is evident from his presentation. This stop at Balquhidder was fascinating because it's not the typical touristy venue. There was no gift shop selling Rob Roy knick knacks or other schemes to turn a tourist dollar (or rather pound) just a simple gravesite in a beautiful, rural Scottish churchyard in the village that Rob Roy called home.
This is an older video from 2010. It's not in widescreen or HD but still worth seeing.

I was driving through Scotland. A country and it's people, I love. I came upon this little church, stopped, and thought, I will have a gander at that. Well, I was knocked out, when I saw the names, on them graves. And looking out, I could see the site of his home. This, was over 30 years ago, I have never forgot the experience. Never will. God bless Scotland.

I'm a direct decenant of Rob Roy and have a great amount of respect for him and his honor and can't help but feel sorry and a little bit hurt that this situation!!
I'm sure that they could of said that since it's obviously a grave yard can we have our talk outside of the graveyard next to it (iv been there so very many times and there's always room ) and if you must look be extremely respectful to the graveyard and even more the grave of the person who you visit!! It's really not a big deal to have the historical speach next to the graveyard since it's looking out over the two lochs and a beautiful river balvaig with lovely mountains looking over you!!!
The raised voice in the graveyard just seems so disrespectful and unnecessary especially when you see the area !!!
If you really respect anyone let alone a famous person from history please please let them rest in peace not treat them like a cash machine for people who really don't care about it that much!!
If it was for direct decenants for the first time yes make a acception but not for everyday tourists!!!
      Please respect peoples resting places!!!
      En choli!!!?

Braveheart depicts all the real battles Wallace fought, so who cares about if there was some romance chucked in and how in real life the battles were fought differently. Who cares? FFS it's a Hollywood Movie, it's was a master piece of a film and nothing will beat it anytime soon. I bet you don't even know any real Scots history but just had to put your 2 bobs worth in. Pathetic go read a book real Scots history is even better in real life from what we know. Alba Gu Bràth (Scotland Forever)

In April 1603, James VI of Scotland issued an edict that proclaimed the name of MacGregor as "altogidder abolisheed". Most of what he said follows the movie's plot. I know some parts of the movie have Scottish history wrong. For example, the Argyles were not Jacobites and were not friendly to the McGregor clan.

Rob Roy MacGregor, My 9x Greatgrandfather(GGF), through my 6x Greatgrandmother(GGM), Ann Temperance MacGregor. Ann married my 6x GGF Captain Henry Connelly who fought in the American Revolutionary War in North Carolina from 1776-1781 fighting both the British Army and their Loyalist Allies. So, my family had a hatred of the Hanoverian Monarchy that stretched back 3 generations.

Never let actual history and culture stand in the way of good bullshit for tourists. This 'presentation' is almost as bad as the movie starring Liam Neeson! This guy is obviously NOT a Gaelic speaker. EVERY single Gaelic definition is not only badly pronounced and completely wrongly defined. Clearly he offers nothing about the culture of the Gael.
    1. 'Gregorach' does not not mean 'Children of the mist' That would have to be 'Clann a' cheo'. 'Gregorach' from Gaelic 'Griogarach' simply means MacGregor. The plural 'Griogaraich' means MacGregors. The suffix ' -ach' more often that never denoted your patriarchal lineage i.e. of the common progenitor.
    2. In the Gaidhealtachd, folks rarely used 'mac' except in reference to their own father's first name. This was called the 'sloinneadh'. So 'mac' simply means 'son' and ONLY means "son of" when used in front of the name of the progenitor.
    3. Mc or Mic does NOT mean "second son", but is simply the genitive of 'mac', and even then has to lenient in use i.e. son of son of would be 'mac mhic' or 'mac 'ic'.
    4. Roy from the Gaelic 'Ruadh' means copper-red and not "bright red" which would be 'dearg'.
    5. Nowhere in the great elegy ' Marbhrann do Rob Ruadh' (69 lines) is Rob ever referred to as a "cattle thief". Highland custom demanded proof of strength and stealth when carrying out a traditional 'creach' (pronounced kre-ach). i.e. the ability to move live stock from one area to another without leaving trace. This was recognised in the Highlands as part of their military training and essential for leadership and extolled in piobaireachd songs such as ' Togail nam Bo' as well as the heroic panegyrics. .
    6. Rob did not invent the 'watch service' - that was his father Domhnall Glas. This was a legitimate service of protection endorsed by the government on renewal license.
    7. The term 'mail from the Gaelic 'mal' does not mean 'money'' but means 'rent'. We get the 'Black Watch' from this.
    8. Rob had ALWAYS been 'big' in the cattle industry and had been business partner with Montrose for 20 + years before his troubles with him began, indeed owned over 7,000 acres of land, and held the barony of Inversnaid.
    9. There is nor evidence that the herdsman was called "Allan", although he may have been a MacDonald or perhaps 'Donald' having been his father's name.
    10. It was actually 12 and not 7 years on the run.
    11. Rob died at the age of 63 NOT '64' (1671 - 1734).
    12. The dispute between the MacLarens and the MacGregors of Balquidder (there were many branches) was not over "cattle" but over the land of Innernenty.
    13. Rob did NOT die seven days after the sword-wound, but gangrene (not septicemia) had set in due to the blade having been rusted that wounded him by 'Stewart of Inbhir na h-iolaire'. (an Appin household). It took the whole summer and autumn of 1734 for the disease to spread.
    14. It was NOT the 'British' government' who firstly made the MacGregor name illegal since the first proscriptions of the use of their name can be traced back to 16th Century Scotland i.e. pre-union, and intermittently, long before that.
    15. Also this is NOT the FINAL resting place of Rob Roy.
Conclusion: Out of a total score of 15 (fifteen)you have scored a total of : 0 (zero)
Finishing comments: I can't see how any 'historian' would "join this 'guide' on ANY theory". But this is typical of the state of heritage in Scotland and is indeed endemic. Outsiders who have no bond nor link let loose on a culture that the have no connection or empathy with is the cultural plague of a nation that doesn' t give a shit about its own culture. Instead they laugh at, and mock genuine tradition-bearers and genuine patriots, such as the great ' Highland Partisan ', Rob Roy MacGregor.. It's like agonsingly enduring watching 'Joe from the Bronx' trying to tell the tale or relating ethos of 'Chief Seattle' ! It is deconstructionism fueled by generational anti-Highland sentiment.
