  • Migration and the economy are at the top of the list of concerns for Germans - that's according to the latest numbers from polling institute Infratest Dimap. It shows dwindling support for the governing coalition - while the far-right AfD is gaining ground over its stance on migration.
We take a closer look at this with DW Political Correspondent Benjamin Alvarez Gruber.

It's almost as if letting in millions of foreigners with a different culture, mindset and ethnicity into your country leads to social upheavel. Who could have seen that coming?

  • @IdyCoba

The disconnect between politicians and the public on this issue is abhorrent. Has been for decades now.

Sweden used to be one of the world's most peaceful country, but the current news said it is now deploying military to help tackling gang violence, because of shooting. I hope Germany doesn't end up this way, with no go zones here and there.

What sucks is that this makes life so much worse for legal immigrants who just want to work and provide for themselves. Its just going to keep getting worse.

  • @fernandovazquez7272

Germans shouldn’t feel like they have to let everyone in their country because of their past.

Who wouldn't just arrive at a country if you knew you were guaranteed free accommodation, food, healthcare, education and given money ? It's madness...

  • @magnuswalker7957

Tony Blair believed it and now we are suffering for his arrogance and stupidity while he enjoys spending his millions. 💷💷💷💷💷💷💷

    Germany giving their country away.

Many of us all over Europe have the same concerns...many migrants don't integrate in our cities, they live in areas that eventually us locals stop going to because they have become dangerous...this summer I spent time in Sitges, a lovely beach town near Barcelona, a place where I go often...the walkway filled with Africans selling counterfeit sneakers, handbags...there is no work for them, why are they allowed in? I think that the EU needs to set much stricter policies and accept less migrants.

  • @CyborgZeta

In the face of mass migration to Europe and the US, there will need to be a serious rethink of asylum laws. Or immigration laws in general.

The problem for Germans was that they were naive in thinking ‘they are the same as us, they just look different to us, we are giving racism the middle finger by letting them live here’. Alas they discovered that the differences are not only skin deep and now it’s too late to do anything about it.

Angela Merkel welcomed all those migrants in 2015 and this has caused all sorts of problems. One of these was Brexit as the UK wanted to control their borders even though this has not proved to be the case but all those migrants coming in had an impact in the voting. Unless the EU gets control of their borders it could cause other countries to leave the EU. There are just too many migrants coming in and it is starting to cause instability and more countries are supporting more right wing parties.

It’s good that you are covering these issues

I am from India and I am on a student visa here. To come to Germany, I had to show my blocked account, my accommodation contract, my university contract, my previous education, loads of rejections, etc. and after coming here, I am currently learning B1 german ALONG with my university (which is completely in English) doing a werkstudent job so I can support myself and give back to the country via taxes and I am grateful that I am getting such quality education with such a little cost. However, where I live, there are people who just don't do anything. LIKE literally, nothing. Their women are out sitting on the street doing no jobs, and their children out on the street all day, and I wonder if they had they same criteria to come to Germany as me. (obviously not)

  • @pacificplug

I’m half Black and German and I totally agree. Stop mass immigration. Nobody treats me wrong here because I work and respect the culture, unklike most immigrants.

  • @matriputra2624

The open borders policy of the EU creators has turned into a nightmare.

  • @m.bowyer5045

Apparently the germans asked saudi arabia,if they could take some migrants, the saudis said no,but we'll give you money to build mosques so they have somewhere to pray 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

  • @Automedon2

If they come in, it doesn't mean you have to house and feed them. If they are illegal, they're on their own. The idea that the third world can move into the west and be taken care of has to end.

  • @PopularesVox

immigration, uncontrolled migration, and seeking asylum from persecution, terms that are loosely banded around and conflated by the news media.

In Europe, we need to start treating these issues the same way the rest of the world treats these issues, with no nonesense. We need to stop letting other countries tell us we are some kind of evil empire and we owe the world something. Time to shut the gates, if you don't like us, stay out.
