Right Up Our Alley - FPV Drone Fly Through

  • This is the one that started it all. Looking for a creative way to help local businesses get back on their feet during the pandemic, JayByrd Films shot an FPV drone fly through at Bryant Lake Bowl, a vintage bowling alley in Uptown Minneapolis that has been open since 1935. Flying a Rotor Riot Squirt Cinewhoop with a GoPro HERO8 Black, Jay Christensen utilized his signature one-take fly through to showcase the space. The breathtaking cinematography and sound design caught the attention of film industry heavyweights such as James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Lee Unkrich (Coco) as well as The New York Times (read their writeup on our film below!). The video quickly went viral, and the rest is history. Let us know in the comments what you think of the time we took our drone bowling.

This is my Aunt's Bowling Alley! She's one of the most down to earth, kind hearted and fun person I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. She works her ass off to make sure everyone can have the best experience there, whether it be dining in, going out for some drinks, bowling or attending the theatre. She's gone in to cover her employee's who have needed time off for their families or were sick on her own day off. She cares about people and I hope that maybe you guys can help return the love and effort she works so hard to give. Corona has really made an impact on her business and I hope that if you get the chance you can support her at the Bryant Lake Bowl. Thank you Jay for taking the time to make this video, this has got to be one of the coolest drone videos I've ever seen in my life and everything was flawless! Absolutely! I noticed that there is no drone noise, and yet I could see some of the actors speaking the words that I was hearing. @@JLB6250 I'm no expert, but there were a couple of moments where clips were stitched together (0:16) and the only other thing I reckon is the curtain at the back of the lanes when it goes up behind it, was taken off and then masked back in so the drone could fit? If you pause it just as it's going in I feel like you can see the cut lines and a bit of feathering. Maybe.
Also when it goes underneath the ball racks near the end you can see a drone shadow on the bowler and the wall, which is cool. I was beginning to think there were bits of track used until I saw that.

The only thing that was added in post-production was the audio and dialogue, due to the loud buzz of the drone.
"I'm walking through the scene and I'm cuing each person to throw the ball, or it's coming back up," Jaska said. "It takes a lot of effort. A lot of time."
It all looks effortless in the final video thanks to the work of drone operator Jay Christensen, who says it took about five practice runs, before the team started filming with the actors and movements.
"We probably did 10 takes with the camera running," Christensen said. "The first few, the timing was way off and we would get to a certain part and the bowler wouldn't be there, or maybe the drone was a little out of position, so it was cool to see, halfway through the process, how we had to kind of re-structure everything."
Christensen says most of the questions he has received is about a portion of the video when he flies the drone through a tight space where the bowling lanes meet the pin machines in the back of the bowling alley.
"All morning I was like stressed about that part," Christensen said. "I thought, that's going to be a hard move. I ended up going 15-for-15 on that (including practice). I never crashed once on that move."

A little masterpiece of FPV and cinematography. Not even touching on the shot setups, clever timings, cheeky film references, foley and ADR which are also really well done, when it all comes together like this this it feels like an atmospheric dream sequence.
I have massive envy for the level at which you can fly - that you can thread the needle not once but well over a dozen times, almost like it's part of your body! Such incredible skill and nuance. I do believe the difference between Chicago and Minneapolis is that in Chicago, if the radio tells you 4-6”, you might get 2”, max, whereas in Minneapolis if they tell you 4-6”, 9 times out of 10, you’re looking at 8”. It’s like they don’t have the heart to give you the bad news.
