We would like to honor and pay tribute to Wendell Scott, the first full-time African American race car driver in NASCAR who remained the only black race car driver for most of his career. Given NASCAR’s history and racist reputation, it’s no shock that Scott was met with racial prejudice and problems not only with its fans but also its top-level officials.
However, Wendell Scott’s determination and internal fortitude finally won out and earned him the historic position of being the first black man to be a NASCAR driver. He also holds the distinction of being the first black driver to win a race in NASCAR’s Grand National Series. Since Scott’s victory, no other African American driver has taken a win in NASCAR’s premier division. With nearly 500 premiere league starts, he ranks in the Top 40 drivers of all time. We salute Scott’s courage and strength as NASCAR was able to right some of its wrongs by finally inducting Scott into the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

I do wonder how did he deal with it all. It angers me that most of his life he was proven to be a better driver than most of his colleagues and they literally refused to acknowledge him.

He was at his best, despite the segregrated and racists behaviour towards him, the efforts to not recognize his efforts a s a great race car driver was built into the system...never equal.

Jeremiah Nance - I felt so frustrated on his behalf. He had an amazing amount of fortitude running through veins. The family is still fighting to get NASCAR to provide a replica of his Jacksonville 200 trophy. Jacksonville Stock Car Racing Hall of Fame presented the family with one. However, NASCAR has been mute on it.

I'm inspired by his out of pocket race operation but even more inspired by his will to continue after all the mentally painful situations he had to endure from all the disgusting rednecks of the racist south. I'm disgusted by my race of people even today. Rest Peacefully Mr. Scott. You are a true Angel and Hero.🙏💜🏁

Great driver and an even better man... I enjoyed the narration... Loved the line where it was said... "For many it was about race... for Scott it was about racing"... well done Wendell... 👍🏽 Glad his family finally saw the recognition he deserved... even though he himself passed away beforehand...

Opulence is nothing to brag about…. Wasting money is the role of fools…. Wendell Scott was a clear example of this. He worked hard and supported his family and insisted they be educated and didn’t know the word can’t….

Hall of Fame, and cheated of his wins...He had a nack for ingenuity from the get-go. It's truly amazing how he never let words break his spirit. NASCAR...still only has one More brilliant racer...Bubba Wallace.
I think it's a shame that the Segregated States of America has hid the history of everything that was accomplished by greatest of all time people with melanin.

@@BlackExcellist that's great I will check it out .I would like to also mention, I live across the river from steubenville oh home to two sets of brothers who put there mark on history . the first is moses Fleetwood Walker ,the first African American man to play major league baseball, and his brother wedly Walker the second to play.
The next set of brothers was john and Jerome Edward's ,who both were part of the 332 fighter group, more popularly known as the Tuskegee airmen. check into these men if you can the city of steubenville is known as the city of murals, and they have paid tribute to these men in these murals yet they are not well known outside of are area or to the younger generation in our area. Thank you for keeping the past alive

Wendell Scott to me always looked like a white man with a slightly olive complexion and more white features than that of a black man (nose and lips). ...definitely Mollatto. The photo of him as a young man reminds me of a picture of my great-grandfather who was Mullatto also, but he looked more like a Hispanic man. Oh, and Wendell Scott was not the only black racecar driver in NASCARs early days (he was the most noted) there were 2 other black drivers that drove for Carl Kiekhaefer's racing team driving 1955/56 Chrysler 300s.

@geraldbeasley, Bubba Wallace is NOT black. His father is Caucasian. Bubba is mixed race as is Kyle Larson and many other racecar drivers.
