  • Gabapentin Weird Side Effects (Skin, Psychological, Eyes)
Gabapentin is a medication used to treat partial seizures and post-herpetic neuralgia. It is a GABA analog, and since GABA is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter, it acts as GABA to inhibit neuronal activity in general. However, due to this mechanism, gabapentin can cause a wide variety of side effects, which we discuss in this lesson.

I’ve been on 3600 mg a day for seven years. It is for CIPN. Chemo induced peripheral neuropathy. I have slowly been weaning myself off and I am down to half a pill twice a day once when I get up, and when I go to bed.. I’m trying to control the pain by controlling my diet. Certain things make pain a lot worse such as alcohol, bread, and pasta, starchy, food, and any form of sugar. Alcohol will send me to the hospital in pain. So I have not had alcohol in eight years. I’m stating all this here in case others are looking for a way to help control their pain while getting off of gabapentin

I had multiple falls on my bike, bruised ribs, and fell down an escalator at a train station. I realized it was going to kill me from an "accident" and I stopped taking it. I am not sure that it ever helped my sciatica from a ruptured disc. The doctor was surprised that I had these side effects. When I stopped taking gabapentin I was fine again. I was also prescribed the related pregabalin, same problems.

Yeah, Falls/Accidents are more likely when on these meds i guess. So people have to be informed about this so that they can take precautions when for example attempt to climb stairs and so on. Guess most doctors doesn't Care enough for their patients to tell them these little "details".

I have been taking Gabapentin for severe anxiety for about three years now and it doesn’t give me a lot of side effects. I do have a tremor in my arms, but that isn’t too bad - I would rather have that than the extreme anxiety I was feeling. I was gagging before I went to work because of anxiety, I couldn’t even get the medications down my throat without almost vomiting. I was in fight or flight mode throughout the day, and every hour with students was a frightening experience for me. It has really changed things for me, but lately I have been eating the pot gummies and I have to say, those work better. Those are the best things I have ever had for anxiety!

It was given to me recently because I broke a thoracic vertebra. When I first went to ER due to extreme pain, the doctor said I needed pain management. I have been shoved through 5 doctors now and it has been 5 months. For the first 2 months, I was screaming in pain, and no one would address the pain. I finally got angry and decided I was going to figure out the homeopathy that would work. It took me 5 days, but finally, the severe pain was gone, but it was still aching and hard to move around. They also recommended Physical Therapy, but I still have not been able to get that because of the Medical System. They started me on Gabapentin, and it sort of works, but I wake up in the morning unable to see. It is very frightening, and it is also wobbly walking. I am 70 and was worried about my memory being affected by this drug. I usually avoid these new drugs. I need to get off this stuff.

Yes I was given gabapentin and I recently wend myself off of the medication I was taking it 100mg three times a day. It was given to me for restless leg syndrome. And I took it over ten years. At first it was helping with my restless leg syndrome but over time I started to have problems with my balance, blurred vision, dizziness, and I had constipation and pain in my left side of my abdomen. I had fatigue and pain in my feet I couldn't put my feet on the floor with our having pain. I have lost of memory and back pain . Muscle pain and aches, sore throat, runny nose etc. I have been off of gabapentin for two months now and my body has totally improved. I feel so much better and I 'm moving better .and my memory has improved.
I already take a seizure medicine and I didn't know that it was used for seizures and I was having more seizures because of this medication I had swelling in my right foot 🦶🏾. I even had tingling in my feet

I knew someone who went on it and her whole behaviour changed, she screamed at me (her best friend) in a way I had never seen before that scared me. Shortly after that she started hitting her partner, I would come by few times a week and he started to have cuts and bruises on his face. She admitted she hit him and that she had been changing since the new medicine and I ultimately had to drop her as a friend because it was starting to scare me.
I knew one other person who also was more prone to fits of rages after being put on this "medicine".

My aunt stopped taking it after realizing gabapentin was what was causing her legs and feet to swell up. Unfortunately, my mom is still on it despite warnings from me (after much research on it) and my aunt. It seems to me she may have many side effects from it, but she has tried to stop taking it before and the pain and increase of restless leg syndrome activity is just too much for her to bear. She has ocassional leg and feet swelling, cognitive and memory issues, trouble walking and with balance. Possibly even the 'target' shaped lesions shown in this video appearing on her legs.
It just does not make sense to me that doctors don't have structured cessation procedures for certain medications, or that pharmaceutical manufacturers don't have smaller dose packets available for those who choose to stop taking certain drugs. Well, I know why things like this don't exist. It's just sad, and so wrong.

I was on 3600mg/day for a couple years, now down to 300mg. My legs have been so damn swollen on multiple occasions that I could barely walk and thought I was going to die. I even had tests done on my heart, an ultrasound on my legs to look for a bloodclot... NOT ONCE have any of my docs ever mentioned this as a side-effect (or any adverse effects for that matter...)
I recently had 4 hours of memory testing because I've been telling my docs for years that I feel like I have dementia since getting on gabapentin. They told me it's because of "my depression" and dismissed any possibility of the massive amounts of drugs they were giving me that are proven to cause memory damage...

I was given this for pain because what are they going to give you if they don’t like to prescribe opioids. Over my long life, I have been on a lot of medications and by far, this one was the most terrifying. I know some people say it “saved their life” but I will not ever take it and I will not give it to a dog (there is a dog version to this). The worst part of this medication is that it made me so mentally out of it that I had no self awareness of all of the physical stuff it was doing to me. Never ever ever again. If anything is illegal, this crap should.

Yeah, I had the misfortune to be prescribed Gabapentin. What they don't tell you about the nystagmus side effect, is that it is both sides, and the movement is so rapid that it is the equivalent to being blind, but as I'f that wasn't enough, it hits without any warning signs, and induces immediate disorientation, nausea and vomiting, and loss of balance, so injuries from falls are common side effects of the side effects. Or if you are unfortunate enough to not be informed of the possibility of this occurrence, and happen to be driving a car, well, you may be lucky to even survive.
This is not a drug, it is a toxin.

A dermatologist (-idiot) once precsribed it for off-label use with regard to skin pain: On the 3rd day I thought to get a heart attack in the office. It worked for me at first. I was given this to counteract my neuropathy. I have rheumatoid arthritis and people with this also get neuropathy without having diabetes. Was doing fine, then about a year in, I developed swelling and skin condition. The doctor discontinued this therapy. And the side effects went away. I think I'm particularly sensitive to a lot of things. My list of medications I cannot take is rather long. About 17 different medications. So I'm used to medications that either don't work or I develop some kind of problem. But I am aware of people that take this medication and have no problems and it is helping them. You just have to be careful and diligent when being prescribed some of these medicines. I would say especially new ones where they have no background on the different side effects. Gabapentin is a rather old medication. Sorry the people that have been greatly affected by this. I hope your side effects went away when you quit taking it.

Yes, there is another comment where a woman said it caused her cat to lose its ability to walk.

It makes me tired and blurs my vision. It's supposed to help my back pain, but it doesn't. Thinking of going off it. Surgery is in two weeks anyway.

    F ...k
Over years of possible experience in drugs given in prescription medication for treatment purposes of extremely
    Difficult circumstance .
I have been much better off not taking a drug with side effects unhealthy to recover 😔 😕
The side effects of prescription drugs can be worse than the symptoms of what we sort help to get some relief for.
Especially in drugs used for medical treatment of mental health problems 🙃 😮
There is a non negotiating relationship between those whom give us medication 💊
If we say I didn't like the side effects when I researched, they will not like 😤 or not treat you anymore
Because you didn't take the poisoning

Can we discuss all of the comments from folks mentioning that they are "weening" themselves off this medication? DO NOT DO THAT! You must consult with your psychiatrist or doctor. You shouldn't do it with any medication, but gabapentin (Neurontin) can be dangerous to withdrawal from without medical supervision.

I had surgery on my back a few years ago and was given Gabapentin to take.
After being on that for about two-three weeks after the surgery I knew I didn’t want to be on this long term.

You can see my other post. I mention control your diet and cut out any alcohol sugar, starchy, food, pasta, bread, rice. As soon as I eat any of these things, I have pain that’s increased. This is for neuropathy by the way.

From my experience, I doubt Gabapentin has any effects side or outer-wise.
