      Hey Shawn, it only requires a bit of funneling to correct the climbing/triggering problem. Make a cardboard box (perhaps with a plexiglass side for viewing/videoing) which is as wide and long as the trap, and as high when tipped. Invert the box over the trap, cut a hole for a door near the Y entry, and put a weight on the box so it won't tip when climbed on. Keep all peanut butter in the bait cap. Should fix all the problems!
      Stay safe, bro!

    OMG! My senior english teacher at the end of class one day in the fall of 1996 put this mousetrap in front of us but didn't tell us what it was. He said he would tell us the next day what it was and was gonna let us think about it. After a few minutes, I actually figured out what it was and was so sure he verified it on the spot. (The air holes gave it away.) It's a really cool trap and I got to look really smart for a few minutes. The one thing I didn't know until watching this video (our teacher didn't tell us), was that the inventor lived just miles away. My high school was in Fayetteville, AR, which is the town south of Springdale. MINDBLOWN!

  • @WillieStubbs

    Looks simple enough to reproduce with some pvc pipe (and use a Wyze sensor to let you know it tripped). The front end needs to be longer so the mouse tail doesn't interfere with the ping pong ball movement. And probably needs those bird spikes on top to keep the mice from climbing on top of it.

  • @DonTruman
    @DonTruman Před 2 lety

    Yep, we've seen that with quite a few of the clever, novelty mousetraps: mouse climbs on the outside of it, trips it, game over, no mouse.

  • @teardowndan5364
    @teardowndan5364 Před 4 lety

    Mice tripping traps while exploring is an issue with all traps that have exposed sensitive trigger mechanisms. The ball also does not fall in the entrance until the mouse's tail has cleared the hole, could use an extra centimeter or two to make this less likely to allow escapes.

  • @gsp0113
    @gsp0113 Před 4 lety

    Shawn, a suggestion: Could you make a graphic slide for your channel illustrating the difference between a native mouse (the deer mouse) vs. a non-native mouse (the house mouse)? In your mouse videos, you almost always comment as to whether the mouse was invasive or not but I think a lot of viewers don't know the difference and would have a hard time telling one from the other. If you have a graphic showing the two species, you could simply point an arrow to the native or invasive species to illustrate the situation in each mouse video, show it for a few seconds when you comment about which kind of mouse you caught, and then re-use the same graphic for later videos. It would do a lot to help educate your viewers about mice. Just an idea. Thanks.

    With live traps you have to deal with the live mouse. Releasing them outside just means they will find their way back. So unless you are catching mice to feed to other animals, or to give to the pet store, the kill traps are just more convenient for the average person.

    This seems like a good idea but needs a slight modification to make it perfect..... And I know exactly what to do. And Shawn I'm surprised you didn't make the modification yourself to make it absolutely perfect. Simply put a "box like" shroud or covering over the entire device so that the mouse has only one option to go in the little hole entrance, and don't allow it to play on the device at all by putting a shroud or covering over the whole device so the mouse cannot even get to play or walk on it at all.

    how come your pet mice are so tame? I caught a mouse once and kept it as a pet, It wouldn't let me handle it, always so fearful and nervous. Yours are very chill.

    I challenge you to make a trap to trap anything else but a rat or a small animal.
    Like to support this idea

    A bit of a "Rube Goldberg" design, with some obvious flaws, but you can't take away from the guy's ingenuity. Cheers.

    Maybe you could put sharp spikes on the top to discourage mice from climbing on top

    I have a genuine question (that you will probably not see,) how exactly do you 'dispose' of the mice before feeding them? I am just curious and would like to know how it's done.

    I think that will work a little bit better if you put a little bit of weight inside the pingpong like sand or something

    Hey shawn, I've been a long time fan ever since your old primitive tools videos and before. But I've really been missing your kill traps reviews. I know it might take your channel down but that's what drew me in to your channel. I'm not saying that your channel became bad nowadays, it actually improved. But mixing in some kill traps would be nice as well.

    I'm wondering; what do you do when you "humanely dispose of" these critters?

    I love the new format, but I still miss the older version, but I’m still happy that you change to improve your vids

    My niece & I have an idea for a trap with a similar principle. I wonder if it's off patent. Might be interesting to build.

    To make sure the mice don't jump on it, make a shelter around it with clear plastic. Hopefully you understand what I mean. If not let me know!

    Many of the traps you show would really benefit from being in a box so the mice, rats, etc. don't trip it before entering. You may lose points on presentation, but it'll improve the effectiveness of the trap.
