    What makes them so popular? Well for me it was the fact that they got 5 tours in the desert in Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan and worked incredibly well in both. Sturdy and rugged enough for 3-4 day missions where your carrying 80+ pounds of gear and light and nimble enough for the in and out door kicking in the urban warfare. They just work well and last great.

    It served me well from Everest base camp, to Kanchenjungha BC to Annapurna, to rain forests of Java and Sumatra. Stays totally waterproof for 30 days plus+ (I haven't tested its capability beyond that). Excellent grip in almost any terrain. Excellent toe guard, protects your foot like a feather in the rugged high mountain down trail. Ortholite is an excellent addition for flat footers (like me). Highly recommended.

    As with my other Salomoms these are so comfortable out of the box , apart from the crippling plastic piece that pushes into the outside of your foot, I found this a mile into a walk, it’s horrendous on rocky uneven ground as they transfer pressure from the sole into the side of your foot. I’ve had Salomon boots for twenty years and this is the first time I’ve experienced this in any footwear.

    I think these boots are great for long distances on dry, technical trails. They are incredibly comfortable. But for winter walking in the UK, especially on places like Dartmoor or places in Wales, where it's boggy and wet all the time, the boots are almost useless at keeping your feet dry. I'd rather have dry feet with less comfort, which is why I eventually ditched the Salomon's and went for Meindl Bhutans (leather boots), which, whilst not the most comfortable, certainly work well at keeping your feet dry during hours of trekking through wet ground.

    The Soloman Quest 4 is my second choice as I have been trying to locate a pair of Mammut Sapuen High Gortex boots with an orange color in a size 8 for the past 3 months with no luck. The Mammut boots are less than half the weight of the Soloman and at close to 80 years old that makes a hugh difference!! It also has a steel shank and uses memory foam for a perfect fit. Living in Prescott, AZ I do a lot of hiking in the Sierra Nevada Mts. and deserts in AZ and Utah. The Mammut has only 1 disadvantage and that is it may not be the best choice in the desert even with Gortex construction. If I am not able to find the Mammut boot in the next 2 weeks I will have no choice but to buy the Soloman.

    I agree with everything you've stated having thrashed a pair of 4D 3 GTX's in rough filthy terrain throughout this last winter . I rotate the use of the Salomons between a pair of Han Wag Tatra's + Zamberlan Vioz GTX Darwin's - all boots get similar wear and treatment . Unfortunately the Salomons build quality is already showing signs of fatigue and looking , at the present decline rate , like they'll not remain waterproof for another six months . All damage is occurring from bottom of tongue where on right boot the suede has already actually split to the sole , forward to toecap protection mouldings which on both boots the rubber/plastic has detached from the suede in multiple places that will inevitably join to create larger 'fault' areas etc. I do not use Hydrobloc or similar wax products on any Vortex lined boots as I ALWAYS blast them clean before allowing them days to dry off naturally in a cool dark hallway . Neither of the other 2 pairs are showing ANY sign of structural weakness . Prior to last year I've invariably bought one very good pair of boots £200+ once a year and worn them everyday until (usually) the soles wear through ; the Salomons wouldn't last 6 months if so treated . In short , if you're not doing more than 10-15miles a week in any conditions they'll , maybe , last a couple of years ; if you do more than 20 miles a week they'll prob not last a year . I love these boots so it is terribly disappointing to think to replace with a different make . They were £70 and £50 cheaper than other pairs , but , at £179 I had hoped for more .

    The Salomons Quest 4D (Forces) are among my favourite boots, but... I have returned 2 pairs of Mk1 in 3 years with major sole defects and GTX failure. I am now on my 3rd pair, the Mk2 let's say, and I notice that also in this 2nd version the sole is not as good as it should be. The heel is crumbling after a good 3 months of use... To be fair, Salomon replaced the boots 2 times without a problem because of their 2 yr warranty, so that is nice, but it isn't normal. It really is a big flaw on these boots. And ok, I use these boots hard and often, but that is why I have the Forces version. So for the harder jobs I always use my military Meindl Island Pro MFS boots, indestructable and reliable.

The Vibram sole on my La Sportiva's are disintegrating in 3 months too, but I'm reading online people say boot life is like 800kms (which is in line with them failing), to me that's very quick, I can do that in under 3 months. I guess I'm trying to calibrate my expectations and see how fast other hard use hikers burn through boots.

  • @z0uLess
    @z0uLess Před 2 lety +5

    3:23 Durability does not sell boots. Reviewers rarely have that type of long term perspective, as things move too fast nowadays. I think consumers can be much more attentive to sustainability than what they are. Even the top end leather boots nowadays include technology that really does not last more than five years, like the gore tex lining inside of the boot and the soft rubber of the vibram soles. Thanksfully, you can at least repair those, and, if you treat the leather nicely, a boot may last 10 years or more depending on how much you use them.

Also at this time of year couch grass seeds get stuck in fabric, inside shoe, inner sole etc. But they do ok playing footy with dog. I've got an old pair of Salomans for walking and they do the same with the stones but great support. I think I may go back to leather boots - Brashers lightweight with gortex inner because they are just easier and keep my feet relatively dry - up to top of ankle. Appreciate vid, thanks.

    • @OutdoorsMagicTV
      @OutdoorsMagicTV  Před 3 lety +1

      I think they'd only be overkill if you're planning to wear them primarily on easy hikes over hot days.
      If the temperature is mild to cold, I don't think they'd necessarily be overkill on any off-road terrain.
      If you do want something for easy hikes in hot weather, you might be better off looking for some walking shoes, rather than boots.
      Hope that helps! Will

      Zamberlan boots are the business . I've thrashed every boot on the planet . Salomon's are light , comfy , good looking , waterproof...? , but not for long . Honestly - look at Zamberlan Trail Lites - however that's spelt
      P.S.. ... BUT...... If you are only wearing them for ten milesish , or less a week , they are very comfortable boots . The soles are grippier and more tactile than Vibram , and , in my opinion , these are extremely lightweight boots . They are waterproof until they start falling apart ha ha .

      I live in NYC and in the summer, even when it gets to the mid 90s with wool socks, these boots don't smother my feet. I tend to overheat quickly too, so I really trust these boots. I've worn the previous model, wet, when it dropped to the teens F and my toes didn't get too cold either. I love these things and think you'd be well served on day hikes. They might be a little more than what you need, but you'll have room to grow if you take on more intense trips.

Mine are truly falling apart , everything is coming unstuck , the suede is cracking through to the goretex more by the week . They are extremely comfy but , with extra stretch , wouldn't last 6 months . Dig deeper and get Zamberlans , £2 - £300 will get you a Bently instead of an MG*

    Well, I'm sure being endorsed by almost every soldier, SEAL, or Green Beret helps popularity for the Quest line of boots. How are the new Quest 4 GTX boots holding up? When I look at recent reviews of all of their new lineup of the 4 series like Ultra 4 GTX, tons of bad reviews from the people that have actually put them to the test and not just casually wear them. Seems like the newest products from Salomon may have taken a huge hit in quality in the last year or two. Maybe it's covid related, changing suppliers or something. All I'm seeing recently is SOLD OUT and mediocore reviews for Salomon.

But I did get my money back on warranty from Go outdoors. (great company). Now its 100% one piece leather with a ton of beeswax and never had wet feet again.

    • @Weznut
      @Weznut Před 3 lety +1

      I feel the same way, yet I have had three pairs so far and I'm still tempted by these. They're just so comfortable. I used to have Meindl Bhutans and they were exhausting to wear and in the end they leaked too.
      I think that with boots there's a tendency to think they will last for years because people say they do, but this doesn't account for the real metric which is mileage.
      Salomons are not a tough boot but they are really comfortable straight out the box: thus they are a low mileage luxury boot and will need replacing sooner than comparable priced boots.

    • @lukereynolds711
      @lukereynolds711 Před 3 lety

      Agreed. I used Salomon Quests for many years for Dartmoor hiking. Amazingly comfortable, but always leaked eventually. Recently got some Meindl Bhutans which are definitely more durable and waterproof, but no where near as comfortable. It's a trade off really. Comfort but wet feet, or dry but achy/blistered feet.
