Bollywood Romances with Masaan, Lootera, October and The Lunchbox. Now, the choice of these 4 particular films is quite interesting. Not only are these 4 films some of the best films to come out of bollywood in the last decade, but they also share something common other than the fact that they are all exceptionally beautiful. No couple at the end gets a forever together, or particularly happy together ending. In 'The Lunchbox', Saajan and Ila fall in love over a series of letters without ever meeting in real, but more importantly Saajan helps Ila realize her discontent in marriage and move past her dull monotonous life and unloving husband, even if they do not get to spend the rest of their lives together. 'Lootera' ends with Varun dying, and with it ending any hope of Pakhi and Varun having a happy ending. But they both loved each other, despite all the differences in their characters, all the misfortunate events, they both deeply cared for each other. Varun died, but only after fulfilling his dream of painting a masterpiece and rekindling the willingness to live in Pakhi. In 'Masaan', Deepak and Shaalu loved each other but had to face the barriers of caste and socio economic differences the society had forced on. It was difficult for them to be together, but they still had hopes, and they were willing to fight but the universe had other plans, Shaalu died in a bus crash and Deepak lived his life with never-ending grief. 'October' showed Dan and Shiuli as co-workers in the beginning, just going on about their work and life, with Dan frustrated with his situation and where he was in life. After Shiuli's horrible accident, the last words to come out of her mouth touched Dan in a way very difficult to understand. He had become obsessed, maybe because finally, someone acknowledged his existence and role, and perhaps cared about him. Through ups and downs, Dan stayed with Shiuli, till the very end, brought her her favorite flowers and kept her family hopeful. And through this weirdly transpired journey, Dan and Shiuli fell in love, their kind of love. Soon after coming home, Shiuli died, but gave Dan his life back, a purpose back. He lived his life in grief, but he had an overwhelming change of character.
Isn't this what love is after all? A journey. A journey of growing, changing, a journey through ups and downs, through hard fought battles. Isn't love a life altering journey?
